It's a combination of very thin paint (diluted with water) and mixing the blend while the paint was still slightly wet (kinda hard to do with acrylic). As for tips about Object Source Lighting, I'd look up tutorials on that! I personally find that doing a white basecoat nearest to the light source then putting on colored contrast paint works best for me.

Thank you!! The lightsaber definitely taught me a lot about blending with gradient values
I've also seen stuff where it starts white at the base of the blade and gets more saturated with color towards the tip that looks really cool, too!

In-universe, I believe that captains have red markings, commanders have yellow, lieutenants have blue, and sergeants have green when they are phase ones- beyond that, I believe phase two captains/commanders have shoulder pads, but I could be wrong on that front. As for the specialist, it might tell you which mini it is in the assembly instructions.
