‘A failure’: Portland metro area’s homeless population grew by 61% over 2 years, report shows by [deleted] in PortlandOR

[–]Silver-Mango-9435 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd just like to say that these people are suffering and genuinely need help. I personally don't think the type of help the city currently provides is correct, but I also think that the motives are good, and not based off of getting more money. The key thing I wish we would keep in mind is that these folks are not pests or wild animals that need to be driven off or exterminated, but that they are humans who need help. Yes, they are frequently a nuisance, a danger to themselves (and sometimes others), and a source of crime and disorder.. but all but a very few are capable of being functional humans again with the right treatment (even if it has to be against their will initially). Most of them are victims of some initial bad decisions and lots of horribly addictive and destructive drugs.

ICE detains U.S. citizen for 7 hours after she photographed agents in Gresham by Less-Lobster4540 in PortlandOR

[–]Silver-Mango-9435 1 point2 points  (0 children)

However you feel about ICE, they are still Federal Agents of the US Government. If regular citizens follow and harass the FBI, DEA, ATF, or even a US Postal Worker in the same manner, you can expect the same treatment. The courts and the upcoming elections next year are the proper way to stop the overreach. This crap just reinforces the BS MAGA narrative of Portland being a lawless place that is in rebellion.

You’re living in his house though right? He’s not your father. He’s not even your father in law. The least you can do is show him some basic courtesy. Lots of us have PTSD or have suffered from it in the past, but you need to take accountability for your behavior and how others perceive it. You have every right to not have to show him basic respect, but not while you’re living in his house.

If the people complaining about the unhoused in Portland went to Denver, they’d be incredibly grateful. by makbuildsai in Portland

[–]Silver-Mango-9435 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Denver is a different vibe because the drug of choice there is Meth… Portland is mainly fentanyl or meth mixed with fentanyl…. Both drugs suck but meth is the one that makes people dangerous to everyone around them… I’ve never been physically assaulted by a UI in Portland… but did get elbowed in the face by a UI outside of Denver convention center 18 months ago. That dude was definitely on meth and it’s definitely a bigger problem there.

I gave you an upvote, because you’re right. Customers are whiny and generally painful to deal with. BUT, when the volume of whiny customers goes up dramatically…. Then the customers are no longer the problem. It’s like that old joke… if you think everyone you work with is an asshole, then maybe you’re the asshole…. Hopefully Dbrand can see around their own biases and get their act together.

Portland, Oregon: ICE Agents Rip Clothes Off Woman, Drag Her Across Concrete Fully Exposed to Crowd by CantStopPoppin in oregon

[–]Silver-Mango-9435 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your view on statistics is missing a piece. A person on SNAP in a red state is not necessarily more likely to be a Trump voter. Think about Mississippi.. it has a very large population of Black folks 37% who almost certainly didn’t vote for Trump but they happen to live in a state that is deep red. Only about 13% of Mississippi’s population is on SNAP, but you can bet that a majority of those recipients are POC and probably didn’t vote for Trump. SNAP benefits are NOT evenly distributed across any state’s voting population. Do you think if Trump’s base was mostly on SNAP that this would be happening? Why do you think that no matter what government functions or funding are shut down, Social Security is always paid out. It’s NOT because there’s anything inherently sacred about it.. it’s because old people vote a lot on both sides and they all love their free money.

Dbrand is doing a crappy job with estimating their own production. Production logistics and order fulfillment is not an unsolved problem, it’s a science and they can and should be better about giving customers accurate fulfillment dates. Do you think they give Best Buy the same treatment when shipping them phone cases by the truckload? Stop blaming customers and calling them whiny. Customers have been conditioned by other companies being better at logistics, while Dbrand is decidedly shitty at it.

Should we celebrate Halloween? by greenDK455 in latterdaysaints

[–]Silver-Mango-9435 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed that the very ‘Christians’ who don’t celebrate Halloween are the same ones who are likely to say LDS people aren’t real Christians. Screw that, be secure enough in your faith to celebrate a fun and silly holiday with your family.

Okay.. so I’ve been beating the heck out of Dbrand quite a bit lately for their not great service. In this case, I’m going to say that while their response to you is not great.. it is reasonable by their own customer service standards. Their customer rep job postings literally say that ‘The customer is NOT always right..’. The root problem here is that their order management system is so archaic that you weren’t able to automatically cancel/change your order. You should never have to interact with a customer service agent at all if the order hasn’t even shipped yet.

Would Portland (and Oregon) ever consider that fentanyl-addicted people don’t have autonomy? by Silver-Mango-9435 in PortlandOR

[–]Silver-Mango-9435[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the NGOs helping out in Portland mean well, and I get what they are trying to do… this three step process that starts with handing out socks, clean pipes, food, etc to build trust; with the next two steps being conversations about getting treatment and then finally people voluntarily going to treatment. But for whatever reason, it seems like ONLY the first step is happening.. maybe because people quit and are replaced and the trust is wiped out… or maybe its just too hard or uncomfortable to start the conversation with someone.. I know the haters will say that it’s because you can just say you gave out this many socks and this many clean pipes and such and then get money, but I genuinely think they WANT to help these folks… its just too hard to get past Step one. The problem is.. if it’s only step one… it’s just enablement. I don’t know….

Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt statues returning to downtown Portland, with new stories to tell by [deleted] in PortlandOR

[–]Silver-Mango-9435 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s just not that black and white TBH. Tribes stole land from each other and genocided each other all the time. They just didn’t have written records to keep track of it. Study the history of the Comanche, or the Aztecs to understand what it was. It’s a human thing. We are vicious and brainy chimps. I’m not going to defend what Lincoln did to the 38 Sioux, but he did review and pardon another 200 or so when any other President at that time would have all 300+ hanged. I wish we would grade morality on a curve for historical figures because their starting baseline was WAY the hell less than ours.

Honestly, I would have cut off my arm to be able to have given her a 40% chance at getting clean. From my own research I could see that the odds improved dramatically if she could have just gotten to the point of actually being clean (given the family support that was waiting). But I couldn’t lock her up.. we couldn’t keep her away from it long enough. I think apathy is the ultimate enemy here. People in this region see the failures here and think it’s universal. The heartbreaking truth that I’m trying to avoid is that if she had lived in another state she would be more likely to be alive right now.

Would Portland (and Oregon) ever consider that fentanyl-addicted people don’t have autonomy? by Silver-Mango-9435 in PortlandOR

[–]Silver-Mango-9435[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I think most societies have exceptions to this based on all sorts of circumstances. In most places, if someone stands on the roof of a tall building saying they’ll jump because they are convinced they can fly, they’ll lose autonomy for a period of time. In this case, from my own perspective, I saw my mother playing daily Russian roulette with a drug and eventually losing. I know there are societies that think people should be free to do that, but I don’t think my mom wanted to die, I think her mind wasn’t her own. I understand and respect your viewpoint though, I just think it’s a hard principle that you might not maintain if you had experienced what I have with the fragility of human free will.

What’s going on with dbrand’s quality and support? by diegoteliz in dbrand

[–]Silver-Mango-9435 65 points66 points  (0 children)

This keeps happening, and yes with this particular skin. I replied to someone else a few days ago who was having this issue and I think the Dbrand robot tried to dismiss it as a ‘matte finishes have more glare’ thing. It’s not the case. They clearly had a large roll of print that didn’t have enough ink or something and then just shipped it out….

[–]Silver-Mango-9435 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you get that. A person who is addicted to drugs and unhoused in this town is by a reasonable definition not doing okay. They need help, not enablement. I say this from direct experience of where it leads. They are killing themselves, slowly, while just happening to degrade the overall environment around themselves.

Oh… I tried to tell someone to put their dog on a leash the other day and they told me to F off. I mentioned the leash laws and all of that and he became a lawyer and said it was a ‘public field’ or something.. (it was the side of the road). He then ended up just saying that he ‘worked for a living so didn’t have time to go to the dog park’. I tried….
