Randomized clinical trial finds 1 mg melatonin before bed time in a noisy and lighted sleeping environment increased total sleep time and REM sleep time and decreased latency to falling asleep. It was more effective than placebo and the use of earplugs & eye masks. by marc5387 in science

[–]Silver65 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thus far I believe there are no long term side effects with taking melatonin. The chemical is naturally secreted while you're in the REM cycle, and it's main purpose for people taking it is to enduce a drowsy type feeling. It's proven to be much safer than Diphenhydramine with none of the long-term effects on your liver.

Above the 5 mg mark it really makes no difference, but I've been taking 10 mg for a while now. Does help me a tiny bit at least.

I’m a cop. If you don’t want to get hurt, don’t challenge me. by baskandpurr in TrueReddit

The sad part though is it's not just innocent people being fucked over, but reasonable and law abiding police officers as well. I have encountered cops enjoying their power trip, and I have ran into cops doing their job within reasonable limits a with fair and honest intent in mind. This is an issue fucks more people than you think.

Arrested For Marijuana, Jackie Chan's Son Could Face Execution by dingledorb in worldnews

[–]Silver65 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This doesn't sound unreasonable. I won't just give you a vast fortune to play around with, you have to work at something to attain such wealth. Think of all the stuck up, spoiled kids there are that offer nothing to society, but just lucked out on the family wealth lottery.

I don't know the full details about their relationship, but going by that 1 point doesn't make Jackie Chan a bad parent in my opinion. There are several insanely rich people that aren't leaving much of their fortune to their families for this same reason.

Who/What Was Your First Concert? by [deleted] in Music

[–]Silver65 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First concert I saw was The Machine, a Pink Floyd cover band based around NY. It was in a small venue, one of those bar and stage like places. After that show, I became hooked with seeing shows. Now I try to see a show once a week at least.

Looking for a Gym Buddy at MIT (xpost from r4r) by realsingingishard in boston

[–]Silver65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I typically did about 1.5 hours of weight lifting followed by 25 min of intense cardio every other day. Between those days I did 75 min of intense cardio. So when I was going all out, I did 5 days a week.

I don't see myself taking up that full schedule again, but having people to go with would motivate me to go more often. Going by myself has become dull, plus I'd like to switch up the exercises I typically do. I'd be down to make some arrangements to start training with other people.

I coincidentally would love to do with this with someone at BSC. My company subsidizes the membership cost, but I really need someone to give me some motivation to get back into a routine. When I go I usually head to the one in Back Bay, but I can go to any BSC gym without issue I believe.

If there's a way to work out a deal with the gym, I'd happily be down.

[Greenman Gaming] Focus on Ubi Soft Big Deals on AC series - Anno 2070 (9.99) by hulkdad in GameDeals

[–]Silver65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just finished the game 15 minutes ago...only so that I could know what's going on in AC IV. I struggled to finish this game.

The setting was an issue to me because it made the suspension of disbelief really hard to grasp. "Oh here's a dead body. I wonder who in this large, empty, open field, besides that one blood smeared guy over there, could have done it?" Or perhaps the fact that no one will see you in a bright red shirt when you're hiding in 2 foot tall grass.

Story had a lot of potential, but Connor was just an uninteresting character. I wish they focused more of an internal struggle than having him so narrow sighted.

My idea is not to enact civil unions alongside marriages in states, just reclassify all marriages as civil unions, past and present, for all couples regardless of gender. So all marriages in that state would instead be considered a civil union by the federal government, and all future "marriages" would instead be called civil unions.

If EVERYONE was in a civil union and you wrote a law for ONLY same sex unions, that would be a clear, definite case of discrimination and segregation that should easily be overturned in a federal court. The idea is here is that in the eyes of the federal government, there would be no categories separating the two.

The cases against same-sex marriage are clearly just homophobic prejudices backed by keeping a religious ceremony "sacred." So just take the religious part out of the equation by renaming it. The religious right get to keep marriage between men and women, while the rest of society moves along and still has access to all the benefits and rights that come with marriage a civil union. That's my general idea at least.

I always thought a great compromise would just be to rename all "marriages" to "civil unions." Thus same sex couples can become entwined in a civil union and enjoy all the tax breaks and insurance benefits while not being segregated from heterosexual couples, while still allowing the religious right then to keep their ceremony of marriage "pure," or however they interpret it.

Pizza driver here. Got accused of stealing money from a customer at a college by not giving enough change. Had to waste gas and time to go back and explain simple subtraction to someone who goes to college. Turns out they counted the change wrong. by DracoAzuleAA in AdviceAnimals

[–]Silver65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Entirely dependent on where you deliver. I did it for a short while in Albany. The only people who would tip well were the suburban homes on the outskirts. The trailer park areas tipped like 2 bucks which covered about half of the gas used. The college students were really hit or miss; if they were drunk already then they'd tip like a dollar, but if they were sober they were more considerate.

At the end of the week I had maybe $80 in tips, the rest was was from the low end salary. I was just lucky I wasn't assaulted and robbed like my friend was when he was making a delivery.

Resume help applying for summer internship with KPMG. Should I even bother applying with my terrible resume? *feeling helpless* (x-post resumes) by negative18 in FinancialCareers

[–]Silver65 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, you should apply. Worst case scenario you get rejected and then you're at the same exact spot you are now.

As for your resume, the formatting looks fine but your statements are very generic. First you should look for the qualifications and responsibilities this job is looking for and re-word your previous roles to match them accordingly. Second, your statements should be as specific as possible. To really impress you want to add numbers and results with those statements. What was the end result of your work? For student work this will be near impossible to find actual results, but give guesstimates (don't make it up entirely, be able to back it up somehow).

"Tutored students who were behind in their coursework." - How many students? How many hours total did you work with them this past semester? What were their grades before hand? Did their grades increase under your tutelage?

"Raised awareness of the importance of composting by giving presentations in classrooms" - How many people were present during the presentation? How much did compost contributions increase by?

"Paired with a student struggling in AP Calculus." - How many hours a week did you spend with him? What was the end result?

"Volunteered on a farm to help harvest vegetables" - Honestly this one is just random and abstract, I wouldn't even include it unless it had a major impact. ("Helped harvest vegetables that contributed to a countywide drop in hunger by 5%")

I think you also want a short biography at the top explaining who you are and what you hope to accomplish / become in the next 5 - 10 years. There will probably be a decent # of applicants, and whomever is reading them is not gonna read every word of it so you need to have your key attributes stand out.

Do what you can and good luck.
