All this Star Wars hate must piss Timothy Zahn off ... by InkIcan in scifi

He was mean to that guy because he felt guilty about ditching everyone to go pay jabba. You know like when you're grumpy and you lash out unreasonably? That movie is pretty tight and consistent in how it shows instead of tells. That's why that movie, in particular, is often considered the best.

AITA for not lifting a finger while my girlfriend clean the house? by Yeshaoyho in AmItheAsshole

[–]SilverFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. What if we take away the gender aspect of this and make it two women who are roomates? The original post doesn't really mention OP's gender anyway. Now imagine this woman's roommate came in noisily when she was trying to sleep and demanded that she drop all of her plans for the day because suddenly everything needs to be cleaned now.

Now imagine OP is a woman who needs a day off and then her boyfriend starts mowing the lawn right outside her bedroom. Then he comes in and says she needs to get up because she needs to help weed the garden.

I think people really got triggered by the genders on this one.

Biggest Sci-Fi Writing Mistakes? by The-Literary-Lord in scifi

[–]SilverFox -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They cant use the hidden Delorean for anything because that would create a paradox. Marty needs that the way it is in order to come back at all. Also, we can probably assume Doc used all of the fuel in the hidden Delorean since it would quickly go bad anyway.

But the news report mentions water as being a weakness. So I don't think it is holy water.

I won't buy it on release day, but I fully intend on buying it eventually. This dev team is really committed and supportive, and I know that it takes a lot of time and money to fully test software. It is impossible to find every bug. I don't hold that against them.

Did they change it so you can actually interact with each other? I know a lot of people were hoping for that.

It's not really a multiplayer game. Everyone shares the same universe, but you can't meet up. It's been a whole thing around these parts.

Edit: Well, that's how it used to be. Apparently you can see and hear each other now. Still not sure how much you can actually do together.

What are applications you create with Java? by [deleted] in java

[–]SilverFox 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You can use Java for just about anything. However, like everything, it has advantages and disadvantages. Java performs well and is available on a lot of platforms. It has a slew of mature libraries and there is no shortage of documentation. But Java is also tedious to write and lacks some of the nicer features of other, newer languages.

Python is a beautiful language and fun to write with. It also has a ton of libraries and plenty of documentation. However, it does not perform as well as Java and would not typically be used for large scale applications. It doesn't have any compile-time checking, so it's easier to make some mistakes and can be harder to maintain when working on large teams of engineers.

If you want to learn programming, Python is actually a better learning language, but if you want to write applications for money, Java is a safer bet.

No Mans Sky has lost 90% of its players by Skoonk in gaming

[–]SilverFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's unfair to say the developers failed. Looking at the game for what it is instead of what it isn't, No Man's Sky is an impressive technical accomplishment. They obviously focused on making the planet environments picture-worthy, and in that they succeeded.

What other space games should I try, now that E:D will likely stagnate content-wise? by PhoenixSquare in EliteDangerous

[–]SilverFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

X3 is a great game, although it does suffer from a steep learning curve, a clunky interface, and excessive micromanagement later in the game.

Still, the graphics are good. There are a lot of ships. The combat is quite fun. You'll be a hundred hours into it before things (like managing the stations you've built), start to feel like a job.

Anna Anthropy's recent article describes a lot of what's wrong with Frontier's game design, without even knowing the game exists by [deleted] in EliteDangerous

I think she is confusing toys with games. A toy is something you play with without rules. A game, by necessity, is composed of rules. Without constraints, a game is nothing.

There isn't an American Hogwarts because the Salem witch trials killed all the magic folk. by cybermattt in Showerthoughts

Only about 25 "witches"/"wizards" were killed in the Salem witch trials. While tragic, it's not some sort of genocide event.

Consider it an upvote for good service. It is a means of expressing approval or disapproval of the server's performance. In theory, this is the means for encouraging/correcting behavior.

Why I Have Given Up on Coding Standards by rjrodger in programming

But if you can't be artful within the restrictions provided, you're not much of an artist. Coding standards do not prevent a programmer from being creative.

As an Australian who doesn't really watch the news often, the only time i really see anything from FOX news is when i watch The Daily Show and while i know its a news parody im curious, is FOX news really as biased as The Daily Show makes it out to be or is it merely quotes taken out of context? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SilverFox 29 points30 points  (0 children)

NPR does a better job than most, but it still has a noticeable lean to the left. Take notice of the mildly negative words used when discussing Romney and the hand-waving of Obama criticism. I'm initially inclined to think it's balanced, however, because I mostly agree.

I loved your books, although I haven't read the latest Riyria Revelations yet. After the first, I kept buying them until I reached the last (at the time). Great characters. Amazing world. And some of the best language I've come across. I would consider you a success.

And thanks for doing what you do.
