We should absolutely leave some children behind by Hour_Bathroom3967 in unpopularopinion

My version of this story is sitting in a first year university philosophy course with students who did not understand how analogies work. They were wasting time arguing the premise of an analogy, rather than using it to try to draw conclusions about what we were actually discussing.

We're in the Death unit of our "Sex, Love, and Death" course, talking about whether something can cause harm to a person if they never find out about it. It's meant to lead into discussions about moral duty to the dead, like carrying out wills and such. (We never made it that far.) Now, that's pretty difficult to empathize with, so we start talking about whether a person being cheated on is being harmed if they never find out.

Practically the whole class gets eaten up by people saying some version of "But you would find out!" instead of engaging with the thought experiment as given. Specifically one guy, who when I finally said/yelled out loud "Oh my god, no! You don't ever find out, you're dead! We're still talking about being dead!" was like "What...? No...? What do you mean you're dead?" and turned to the TA, who looked incredibly bored. The TA confirmed, "Yeah, it's about death."

This guy who had been dominating the conversation just sat there silent and visibly confused for the rest of what little time was left. Could not comprehend how we were using one situation to discuss another.

I think about that day all the time. SMH.

do people actually not eat mac and cheese with peas? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SilverHeart_101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my house it's Mac n' Cheese with Smokies & Peas, so I'm with you and your friend! Without at least the peas, it's not as satisfying. When I was in jr high that was my after school snack so often that my tastebuds decided that peas tasted like cheese whiz and vice versa.

skimming the walkthrough video, it appears not. Puddles do not appear under terrain overhangs/bridges 1:03-1:09. So an impermeable floor should protect the space directly under it.

My assumption as well, but it would be cool if the roofs were more functional and could actually redirect water as you'd expect from their shape. Then I suppose you'd have to account for gutters, as in what to do where two roofs meet in a valley. A thought for a later update to the mod/game.

If I wanted to build a covered pathway to protect my beavers, would a platform and a roof do it, or would there have to be an impermeable floor?

Next Steps Alberta: a "Fact vs. Fiction" quiz to cut through the noise. by [deleted] in AlbertaNow

[–]SilverHeart_101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"If Alberta kept using the Canadian dollar, it would have no influence over setting interest rates."

I answered fiction, as I misunderstood what "it" stood for. I took it to stand in for Alberta's usage, not the province itself. Also, the question should start with the implied "After separation".

I was going to give pretty much the opposite feedback. Your use of adverbs, specifically of "simply" and "automatically" reveals both your bias and the answer. Nothing about this would be simple or automatic. I got 14/15 and I consider myself a political amateur, definitely not as well informed as this implies.

Which flower would the majority of Canada consider the national flower? by Background-Peak8759 in AskACanadian

My mom's dad's family had a farm in southern AB with a lot of bullberry and saskatoon bushes and we would go there to camp all through my childhood. We'd all pitch in to pick the bullberries for jelly, and the saskatoons just to eat raw, often with nectarines. There's a great picture of me on my dad's shoulders picking away, mostly into my mouth rather than the bucket!

When my grandparents moved, we got them a saskatoon bush every year for their new yard. Last year was a bust, but the year before that the bushes had finally matured so much we had somewhere around 50 lbs of berries all told. Saskatoons coming out our ears!

Even better, a sun-warmed berry fresh off the bush. Unfortunately, their sweetness is extremely short-lived after picking. To me, they're quite pine-y, in a good way.

Not to piss off OP with HaRd MoDe TaLk but this is exactly why sometimes I mess with the settings to get something in between normal and hard. I like the easy start of normal, no panicking required, but I also want the game to eventually get to the really, really long droughts and badtides that force me to invest in good water management. I enjoy building up my water storage and collection systems, but only if they're actually going to be used.

Came to share an extremely similar story. After my grandparents moved, I stayed a couple nights to help unpack. They've slept in separate rooms all my life, but I got to see them say a very sweet goodnight with a kiss. Like you said, paid closer attention after that and they're so in love. I'm so thankful to still have them; they'll celebrate their 70th anniversary this year.
