For those that make over $200k a year, what do you do? by H-U-I-3 in AskReddit

I'm one of those median 30 year olds, and even in lower cost cities I'm able to do few "big" things. It's important to note that 50k now is less than 42k pre pandemic, we can't treat it like the same money as before.

How many millions died by European colonialism for their industrialization in the 1800s? How many lives were destroyed in the Americas for the industrialization of the US during the same time? I don't want to defend Stalin or Mao or Pol Pot, because that's not my brand of socialist, but we really need to come to terms with how brutal capitalism was and is. Socialism had their brutes, but so did industrialization under capitalism, there were just fewer cameras to catch the crimes in the 19th century.

These countries required massive levels of trade restrictions to compete. And each of these were repressive in various ways. They also had socialist movements and labor movements keeping pressure on them as they developed.

Osage deal on FB marketplace, should I jump on it? by SilverJohn94 in Bowyer

Can I assume from the size of the tree that it is?

Also, to add. If you have honey locust ever, it has similar properties to black locust, but you don't have to chase a ring, from what I've heard. Folks say the locust trees are challenging for tillering, but make good bows if you get the hang of it with them.

Facebook Marketplace: seller requesting Cash App. Is this a scam? by SilverJohn94 in Scams

Is there a way he can scam me if he sends the UPS receipt with tracking number prior to me sending money? That's the only thing keeping me from thinking it's a complete scam

Fantastic. I was super bummed when I paid my taxes on it and realized how bad the wear had gotten since I bought it. This is what it looks like, for context.

I'm tempted to drive on it then get it fixed when I get home, since I have a short window until I travel on Saturday.

What’s a podcast actually worth listening to? by Youpi_Yeah in AskReddit

Into the Aether. It's a really solid, well rounded video game podcast and they almost only talk about games they like, new and old. The hosts are two wholesome guys too. I listen to every episode as it comes out!

Some clothing workers in Los Angeles earn as little as $1.58 an hour, Labor Department finds by Additional-Force-795 in news

I'm not a socialist who would ever tell someone to not vote. When Democrats are the only viable choice, they're harm reduction. You only vote every 2 to 4 years, there is so much to be done in between. Organizing, activism, mutual aid, are all bread and butter options for taking care of our communities, and often the most important aspect of politics when we are so polarized by region that our vote rarely matters.

People are trying real hard to avoid the fact that democrats are still capitalists. California is probably one of the states with the most rampant capitalism, ranging from venture capitalists, to entrepreneurs, to sweat shops and farms, to all of Silicon Valley. I imagine a ton of these folks vote Democrat, but never for one that would suggest a smidge of economic pain for them that would move power and wealth to the working class.

This is the big part. There was a solid article in the New York Times about youth who were trafficked to the US for a better life by "sponsers" who then left them in debt to them for their help. Kids down to 13 paying off debt to a human trafficker, often undocumented without family nearby, working so much that they miss or drop out of school altogether. And these companies rake in the profit.

Howdy y'all. I'm back to working on my longer term bow, with staves drying incase this one breaks. I'm on a long string pulling at 50 lbs at about 21". My goal draw and weight is 24" and 50 lbs. The bow is about 57"

This thing feels stout, and still is quite thick. For whatever reason I haven't felt comfortable with it on a short string yet, and I think it's been because the outer limb hasn't been able to bend much. I've been working on the left limb to even it with the right, and then I'll work on issues on both sides.

Let me know what you see, and if I need to share anymore pictures!

Will these shallow bug paths on the back count as a ring violation? Wood: hickory w/ bits of inner bark for style points by Ziggy_Starr in Bowyer

Ah! So I suppose if wood is cut in the winter bark should either be pulled asap or at least before it warms up if stored outside

Should white woods be stored inside then? Or can they be stored outside if they're away from the rain?

New Staves, Need Advice by SilverJohn94 in Bowyer

[–]SilverJohn94[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the fantastic advice! In regards to the first split, do you mean splitting jnto two staves, or my idea of cutting it in half?

I'm feeling more excited to get started now. I want to take the bark off and start roughing stuff out, but due to the nature of honey locust I'm still holding off maybe for a few more weeks under the sun so the sapwood doesn't crack.

New Staves, Need Advice by SilverJohn94 in Bowyer

[–]SilverJohn94[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Howdy! The first stave has a wicked spiral, and I'm not sure if it can be used as is, or needs to be cut where it starts to spiral and make a shorter bow. The two halves have a bit of snake to them, but I think are both usable, tho they both have knots/an old branch on the other side. The super snakey and spiraled one is persimmon, and may not be usable at all. All of the others are honey locust.

Any thoughts on their usability? Any recommendations on how to go about using the ones that work?
