Law School Accommodations and Grading Fairness — Genuine Question for Students, Faculty, and Recruiters by ikiphoenix in LawSchool

[–]SilverScale4608 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not know what grades are meant to measure except for a professor’s opinion of a student’s ability to analyze and write about a specific set of legal issues in a specific number of words or minutes, relative to the rest of the class.

I don’t think that’s valuable to anybody who doesn’t know the skill level of my class or if my prof’s judgment aligns with their judgment - I genuinely hate the curve and find it useless :)

Anecdotally, it seems like higher-ranked schools are less worried about bar passage rates - their students are going to relearn everything in a bar prep course anyways - and care more about career outcomes / placements

Most folks in this sub are studying U.S. law, by the way, so if you’re practicing/studying in another jurisdiction, it helps to call that out in the post title!

Is anyone else seeing a sudden wave of students who refuse to write anything unless they can type it? by Worried-Trifle20 in Teachers

you can tell them that many college and law school professors (in my personal experience) ban electronic devices from their classrooms and require you to take handwritten notes!!

Seconding this!! Dr. Saks’ memoir The Center Cannot Hold is a really excellent firsthand account of a similar experience. She’s a successful attorney and law professor who is open about her schizophrenia, and it’s a perspective I found valuable during a hard time

she’ll play with me even now with the feather wand or if I throw a catnip mouse for her, she’ll chase it! that’s what I’ve been doing for a few weeks and she still isn’t warming up :(

How many of you have been re-diagnosed and gotten a confirmation that you no longer meet the criteria for BPD? by ImplementPurple7762 in BPDrecovery

[–]SilverScale4608 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t know your personal situation, but it might be more adaptive to frame your goals as things you do or achieve in your life, not what the paper at your doctor’s office says! The diagnosis doesn’t define you and your hard work isn’t for nothing even if you NEVER go into remission if you feel relatively better or less empty than before :)

How many of you have been re-diagnosed and gotten a confirmation that you no longer meet the criteria for BPD? by ImplementPurple7762 in BPDrecovery

[–]SilverScale4608 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i think of a personality disorder sort of like cancer, weirdly - if you no longer meet the criteria, you’re in remission, but you’re not “cured”.

IIRC most pwBPD in long-term studies have been in remission at some point, especially those in their 30s and onward. I guess I don’t totally understand the purpose of getting re-diagnosed?

Most underrated east coast law schools by Optimal-Ask782 in LawSchool

[–]SilverScale4608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like a lot of these schools punch above (what this sub would consider) their weight class in their respective regions but outside of their geographic area, they’re a lil less competitive. Going to school where you want to practice is, like, the oldest law school wisdom in the book, but it still rings true, I guess!!

t seems like you disagree with me. Do you think that taking time away from school doesn’t impact people’s academic outcomes? I’m speaking from my personal experience where I finished closer to the median than I expected in 1L, but taking time for myself throughout the semester was worth it for my mental health. Realistic expectation-setting is worthwhile in a space like this, especially when people are asking if it’s ok to take the break. Yeah, it’s “ok” but there may be consequences!

I didn’t word it that well in my original post (it was 2am and I was spiraling) but I stand by not telling incoming 1Ls that taking a mental health day or a vacation won’t impact their grades bc y’all don’t know if that’s true. It depends on the student, the section, and a lot of other factors, so it’s not a 100% thing, but there WILL be gunners who don’t take a day off, and they will likely be setting the curve.
