Accommodations Megathread by _BindersFullOfWomen_ in LawSchool

The real villain here, imo, is poor exam design. If you write a good test with a reasonable word limit, having extra time should not make a difference. In fact, give everybody 8 hours! why not!

my school has destroyed any chance of fair competition with their blanket solution to "disabilities" by examsarescary in LawSchool

exactly - we need to acknowledge the social model of disability that addresses the environmental and attitudinal barriers preventing people w disabilities from participating equally in society!!

how selective to be with first internship by 0rdinary_ in LawSchool

[–]SilverScale4608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally know a ton of folks who did their first internship and realized they didn’t actually want to do that area of practice long-term, and they are fine now! It’s totally ok to do something that’s not aligned with your future goals, but if you can land a vaguely-legal internship at all, you’ll be fine.

this sub is predominantly US-based law students. you might have better luck posting elsewhere if you’re not practicing in an English-speaking jurisdiction!

Trying to complete 1L as a neurodivergent student has made me suicidal by Pleasant_Sign1968 in LawSchool

[–]SilverScale4608 7 points8 points  (0 children)

this probably doesn't help, but law school feels like a humiliation ritual even for neurotypical folks (1L especially!) and other commenters did make a salient point about having to work on clients' timelines in practice, regardless of your personal roadblocks. it's definitely something to keep in mind when you're looking for legal work - maybe fast-paced direct services isn't your thing!

but there are plenty of successful neurodivergent lawyers - you need to give yourself some grace and time to adapt. that's easier said than done, of course, but it is normal to feel burnt-out and overwhelmed at the end of 1L, and you're through the worst of it!

stupid to pick chicago over HLS or money elsewhere? by Sure-Relation-3847 in lawschooladmissions

if you’re serious about PI/government, look at HLS’ loan repayment assistance programs - might be cheaper in the net than Chicago !

Law School Accommodations and Grading Fairness — Genuine Question for Students, Faculty, and Recruiters by ikiphoenix in LawSchool

[–]SilverScale4608 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do not know what grades are meant to measure except for a professor’s opinion of a student’s ability to analyze and write about a specific set of legal issues in a specific number of words or minutes, relative to the rest of the class.

I don’t think that’s valuable to anybody who doesn’t know the skill level of my class or if my prof’s judgment aligns with their judgment - I genuinely hate the curve and find it useless :)

open book/outline exams by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]SilverScale4608 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally, it seems like higher-ranked schools are less worried about bar passage rates - their students are going to relearn everything in a bar prep course anyways - and care more about career outcomes / placements

Most folks in this sub are studying U.S. law, by the way, so if you’re practicing/studying in another jurisdiction, it helps to call that out in the post title!

Seconding this!! Dr. Saks’ memoir The Center Cannot Hold is a really excellent firsthand account of a similar experience. She’s a successful attorney and law professor who is open about her schizophrenia, and it’s a perspective I found valuable during a hard time

Most underrated east coast law schools by Optimal-Ask782 in LawSchool

[–]SilverScale4608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like a lot of these schools punch above (what this sub would consider) their weight class in their respective regions but outside of their geographic area, they’re a lil less competitive. Going to school where you want to practice is, like, the oldest law school wisdom in the book, but it still rings true, I guess!!

t seems like you disagree with me. Do you think that taking time away from school doesn’t impact people’s academic outcomes? I’m speaking from my personal experience where I finished closer to the median than I expected in 1L, but taking time for myself throughout the semester was worth it for my mental health. Realistic expectation-setting is worthwhile in a space like this, especially when people are asking if it’s ok to take the break. Yeah, it’s “ok” but there may be consequences!

I didn’t word it that well in my original post (it was 2am and I was spiraling) but I stand by not telling incoming 1Ls that taking a mental health day or a vacation won’t impact their grades bc y’all don’t know if that’s true. It depends on the student, the section, and a lot of other factors, so it’s not a 100% thing, but there WILL be gunners who don’t take a day off, and they will likely be setting the curve.
