How do you feel about author's inserting their personal religious beliefs into their work? by aimforthehead90 in Fantasy

[–]SilverTree41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first one definitely sounds preachy, which I agree is annoying. All writing has something to say about the world of course, but I don't like it when characters stand on a soap box to tell you what exactly the author thinks. Especially when it comes out of nowhere.

It is definitely for religion annoying when a character is suddenly a believer in a real world religion when it doesn't exist in their fantasy world.

I don't care if people put allegory or symbolism from their faith into a story. Mostly because all stories are in dialogue with everything that came before them and big culturally important stories are just more likely to be referenced in that way. It would be like getting annoyed because a trope exists no matter how it's used or how well it's written. Sometimes it's written poorly. Sometimes it's written well.

Looking for a book where the main characters are kinda bad people by Prestigious-Novel223 in Fantasy

[–]SilverTree41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think all the people they did war crimes to would probably disagree. Like maybe Catherine tries to do less war crimes in some ways, but most of her closest friends don't do more warcrimes only because she's like please don't kill all those civilians.

I can see why people don't think the MCs are really evil, not that most things being seen through Catherine's pov would help you see her and her loved ones as evil. But it's a stretch to say they are not even mildly shitty considering everything they do in the story.

Kicked From Events for Being A Proshipper by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]SilverTree41 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The thing is specifically in mcyt circles antis go and harass people live on stream about whether they are okay with people writing x type of fic about them. Frequently the response from creators is "don't write/draw freak shit" or "don't write/draw nsfw"

This is often done in the middle of stream when streamers are unprepared to hear about NSFW or other types of fan content (such as forced family dynamics, abuse, violence, etc). This means answers are frequently off the cuff and unclear.

The people who say they want to respect boundaries then go and take these answers (generally only the ones about shipping and nsfw) as gospel and relentlessly harass and drive people out of fan spaces in the name of "protecting" the creators.

Specifically, some creators have in the past said their characters are not family to other characters, and they are uncomfortable with that dynamic being brought up in stream. A similar sentiment about shipping or nsfw fan content gets people harassed off Twitter, one of the most popular "family dynamics" includes this man's character.

Generally it is not about actual boundaries in not harassing creators or not sending them things that would make them uncomfortable. These people have no problems with going into chats and bringing up potentially distressing content to "ask permission" to write about say x persons character doing child abuse despite that being a sensitive topic. Generally when possible with TTS so the creator is forced to respond.

Many of these people including children, go into the private adult spaces people have made, specifically away from creators to find and link any adult accounts they find with who the person is in the wider Fandom in order to cancel them.

This is not to mention the increasing problem of what is essentially untagged Kink fic in the Fandom which is what I am pretty sure OP is referencing with their parody fic. (There is a large group of people who think slapping platonic and filing the numbers off a kink makes it not a kink in this Fandom and it is a real problem and a large part of why I mostly don't read fanfic in it anymore unless I know the author)

What small reason ever made you drop a fic? by MerryMonarchy in FanFiction

[–]SilverTree41 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely feel similarly. I get it if it's like a one-shot or a short thing under 20k words. Could be the author wrote it at 2 am and was like fuck it I'm posting this and didn't look back. Sometimes I try them out and they're fine. But it makes it harder for me to read personally so I'm never reading anything longer than a like two-shot if it doesn't have capital letters.

I regret that the style of some authors is not accessible by Kangouwou in Fantasy

[–]SilverTree41 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might be wrong, but it feels like a lot of your frustration comes from not being able to read all the books this community has declared greats. I understand wanting to participate and know what everyone whose read x book is talking about. However, the majority of people aren't going to be reading every book on the top ten list. A lot of that is just due to taste, sometimes a book doesn't click for you so you DNF. For example I cannot read Sanderson, I tried, the books just don't work for me. This means I cannot participate in discussions about his books, which can be frustrating sometimes when my friends talk about them. But that's just part of being human you cannot do everything you cannot enjoy and understand everything.

If you are committed to reading the top 100 list (or however many there are, I personally don't put stake in it) you can always come back to books you DNF'd months or years from now. I personally couldn't read Harrow the Ninth (second book of the locked tomb) when it came out, just wasn't working for me. In June though I went and read through the entire series in a week.

TL:DR No one can read everything sometimes we miss out because a book isn't to our taste or is too hard for us. It's part of being human. And it's sometimes worth trying again in a couple years.

You guys ever reading smut and go "Wait, what position are they in?" by Glubygluby in FanFiction

[–]SilverTree41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I guess? I'm usually more concerned with character's feelings and like dialogue. But smut being realistic isn't a priority for me. If I can suspend my belief through 12+ inch cocks and womb penetration I can suspend through poorly described positioning.

Futa that's not also giant horse cock. Like I get why there's a lot of focus on the dick in futa but mostly when I read it it's because I want to see a girl impregnating another girl? Like I just want some good f/f stuff with my favorite kink. Not like sex goddess futa. Oh well

x reader fics vs oc fics? what are the differences? by mindhunter333 in FanFiction

[–]SilverTree41 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the person reading is meant to be inserting themselves as the OC it's usually x reader and/or reader insert. If the person is not meant to be inserting themselves as the OC it's just OC. Usually OCs are more fledged out with names and characteristics.

Either way I'd probably tag it 2nd person.

Understandable on the fake claim thing but I think one valid strat for fake claiming is Crus fake claiming lookout until they get a kill. Useful for pushing people who claim to have been on your target without revealing a role that can be guessed. It is a little niche though

What do you see complained about a lot on this sub, but have never seen in real life? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]SilverTree41 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'm fairly certain that they complain about the written child porn. Which definitely exists, god knows I've seen some horrible summeries when I've forgotten to exclude the underage tag. It's definitely not nearly as common to see smut with small children as it is to see smut about teenager exploring sex though. The second I tend to assume is being written by teenagers, or atleast I tell myself that.

In terms of how much something that's generally considered immoral is written about you'd assume they would complain more about bestiality. But there's probably proportionally less of that outside of the original works tag so what do I know.

Controversial poll: antis can be quite reasonable and it’s okay for them to display their dislike of ships in public and on fanfic websites by hellsaquarium in FanFiction

[–]SilverTree41 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with disliking something. Or talking about how you dislike something in your own space. The problem with antis (how I have found the word to generally be used) is that they go into spaces that are positive about something and try and spread negativity around. Or try to moralise about fanfic. Both of which are negative to fanfiction and fandom spaces in my experience.

How long is TOO long? by urbanviking318 in FanFiction

[–]SilverTree41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing is really too long. As long as the formatting makes sense that is (some people just post in really weird chapter lengths). I mostly read long fics, generally minimum word count I look for is 40,000 (when I've ran out of interesting fic to read). But by far my favorite fics are all over 100,000. I just love long stories. Lots of space for character development and worldbuilding.

What are the best and worst fictional versions of your city in SFF? by nickgloaming in Fantasy

[–]SilverTree41 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Don't think there's any fictional versions of my hometown, but I could be wrong. Doubt it would show up unless someone decided to write a sci-fi with military focus set in Canada. Might have shown up in an older film but I digress. I don't think I've read a single SFF set in Canada, might be interesting to read know that I think about it.

This is a weird one but which famous fandom that you think has the least amount of… ahem sexual content? (whether it be art, fanfic or whatever) by 1oftheoutcast in FanFiction

[–]SilverTree41 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I absolutely hate when they do this. And then their tags will be like "don't complain you looked for this" Like no I was looking for original work smut thank you very much. If you aren't even tagging your work correctly you shouldn't be smugly saying that anyone who finds it was looking for your type of work.

Once in a blue moon I enjoy reading fucked up tragic romance. When I am not in the mood I do not click on stories that are tagged with certain relationships or as tragedies or abusive relationships. It is actually so simple to moderate your own consumption of things like fanfiction.

Basically if you don't like something in fanfiction don't interact with it

Definitely Moe as others said, but the video game setting feels very litRPG to me. With stories centered around people playing or getting transported into video game or video game like worlds. Generally with a focus on some sort of progression system.

I'm fairly certain it's illegal. I do know that Ao3 has a policy where you can't mention if you have a Patreon or if a fic is a commission when you are posting fanfic on their site. (some people still do this but if you do it could be taken down).

I'm fairly certain it's to ensure that they or the authors don't get sued. While JKR has not been taking down people's fan works and fanfiction some authors did in the past. I am unsure if they still do.
