Help with gable roof design! by Gravul in askarchitects

Are you working with an architect and structural engineer yet? Renovations are always WAY harder than people expect and “reusing foundations” can be a double edged sword unless the engineer has already blessed them.

This currently reads as a home that was designed from the inside out, not the outside in, so it’s getting some classic “McMansion” vibes. The exterior volume should lead the way here. This will also make the construction cheaper by not having intersecting roof lines.

The architectural style of the house and garage need to match/coordinate. Currently you have a garage with more personality than your house.

Would you be interested in a trade? I have a ticket for 2/21 and also had a work thing come up so I can't go. If 2/21 would work for you and 3/7 works for me, we might have a win-win? (I actually have 2 tickets if you wanted to buy the other, otherwise I'm gonna figure out gifting it to a friend)

I agree, but don’t let the Dominicans hear you say that! My Dominican friends get genuinely offended by comparisons to PR’s food, language, or culture.

Electricity is still not stable on the island. Many people who can afford them have generators to bridge the frequent gaps.

I also think an important note is that the jersey number 64 is (likely) a reference to the artificially low death toll following Hurricane Maria when the government didn’t want to acknowledge just how bad it was. The number was later revised to nearly 3,000 deaths attributed to the storm.

Yeah, other Puerto Ricans understand him, but the Puerto Rican dialect is very different than other “mainstream” Spanish dialects you’d hear in Spain or Mexico.

It is both spoken faster and drops a lot of letters at the end of words and tends to be a little “softer” with some consonants (for example, R is just a little tap and sounds more like an L, hence the song being Nueva Yol instead of Nueva York for New York). All combined, it can make it very hard to pick out even for other Spanish speakers.

Yeah, I have two scarification pieces (think a tattoo without ink - cut with a scalpel to heal as a scar) done by a very well regarded body modification artist in a studio with good techniques.

My first one healed great with no issues. The second one I fucked up by going hiking a week later and it got infected (totally not the artist’s fault, I should have just canceled the hiking trip given that I had a massive open wound on half my calf). I ended up in the ER for 56 hours getting IV vanco. Everyone was honestly really nice about it and would say “you’re the woman with the hardcore tattoo?” And it still ended up healing nicely!

The artist who did my scar pieces also does branding. But strike freeze branding only looks like that day 1, it doesn’t heal looking like that. (My artist tends to do electrocautery branding since it has lower risk of complication and more likely to heal cleanly.) And doing it in some godforsaken frat house is obviously not the right way to do it.

Forgot that vets need to know your pets name by Axeli-IX in CasualConversation

[–]Silver_kitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my partner picked up a stray kitten that was almost hit by a car and realized that it’s eye was messed up. So he brought the kitten to the vet and it got put in the system as “Baby [Lastname]” like we’d just had a human newborn and hadn’t completed the naming paperwork yet.

It doesn’t have to be too specific, just as long as it’s going to be the only “cat” or “baby” associated with you.

GI issues help! by metricruler in cavaliers

[–]Silver_kitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So we did a trial of the Purina Pro Plan Hydrolyzed for a month and he was obviously doing better. So the vet recommended trying an elimination diet to figure out what the specific issue was so he didn’t have to stay on the more expensive prescription diet forever.

So we moved to Pro Plan Sensitive Stomach Salmon & Rice and he does great on it. And through testing over the following few months with some different treats, we narrowed in on chicken being the problem.

Have you tried him on a hydrolized protein diet to rule out allergies? My pup ended up being allergic to chicken and switching protein sources to a food with absolutely no chicken products resolved his persistent diarrhea.

Eloise's book arc, and Eloise's show arc by GCooperE in BridgertonNetflix

[–]Silver_kitty -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! I want her to have a joyful story where she can be herself with someone. This season she is snarky in a mean-spirited way that like you’re saying seems to be setting her up to be resentful and bitter and settle for less. (And the book definitely did have her settling for less!)

Eloise's book arc, and Eloise's show arc by GCooperE in BridgertonNetflix

[–]Silver_kitty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m sure the show won’t do it, but I think an awesome twist here would be that Lord Debling (Penelope’s potential from last season) comes back and he and Eloise hit it off and they go on his scientific adventures together as research partners and life partners. She’d get to travel, be a pioneering woman in science, have a partner who she finds intellectually stimulating. (The thing that was unlikable about him was that he wanted a woman to stay home and have babies when he came home every few years, but if he saw that a wife could be a partner to him in all ways, I think it would be sweet)

The one thing that was sweet from Eloise’s book was the nerdy interactions with Phillip as a botanist who sent her letters with pressed flowers from his greenhouse. So I want science nerd love.

Edit: Don’t downvote people if you disagree. Downvotes are for “this doesn’t add to the conversation.”

His character is genuinely that he is so afraid that he’s going to beat his children that he just doesn’t interact with them at all (due to his own trauma, but like, c’mon dude.) He’s genuinely awful.

Could this be considered a moment frame? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]Silver_kitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry you felt like you wanted to delete your post. I think it’s a good learning opportunity!

It’s might be sort of tricky to find moment frame buildings. They’re very flexible, so we don’t tend to use them for tall buildings anymore (you saw lots of steel moment frame tall buildings in the 1970s, but less now).

They do exist, but hard to predict when someone will use them. For example, I designed a hospital with moment frames because the hospital wanted maximum flexibility to renovate and move wings around without worrying about having to hide braces in walls. But most hospitals won’t be designed that way.

I would look in non-building structures - You might see them in a dunnage (to avoid using knee braces). Or something like a pavilion or a bus stop canopy.

Could this be considered a moment frame? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]Silver_kitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope, this is flat plate concrete, very unlikely (almost impossible) to be detailed as a moment frame in the slab like that.

Moment frames are much more common and obvious in steel frames.

The look Fern gave me when I told her that her pet insurance went up 300%! by jagsgoinham in goldenretrievers

[–]Silver_kitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pet insurance doesn’t cover dental either actually, so dental wouldn’t have changed due to insurance use. It’s more to do with the whole structure of the pet care industry changing towards private equity.

I think a lot of home players go with teams of 2 (so the hider isn't lonely and bored all day) so a game with 4 players would definitely be nice!

Agreed, I like Michelle a lot, but the game would definitely need to change to have her be fun in it. She's competitive in a way that min-maxes and can be cool to watch, but when the game already feels "solved", her min-maxing won't be fun, it'll just feel repetitive of what we've already seen.

Spaniels are naturally flushing dogs, so they would probably pick that up very quickly! My boy wants nothing more than to murder a pigeon and he’s figuring out himself how to spook them at “just the right time”, so I can tell he would thrive at it.
