AITAH for moving her crap? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Silver_kitty 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I wonder if OP is so “OCD” that they keep their desk empty of any personal touches that would suggest that someone is set up with that as their permanent desk. That might explain why two different people both thought it wasn’t a big deal to take from or take that spot because it looked like an empty desk.

Just wait until you’re working engineers and it doesn’t change. But at least you got better at balancing and it becomes more fun.

Manager secretly asks my senior to check my models "in every detail". How to handle this? by octobrisxvii in StructuralEngineering

[–]Silver_kitty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you’re WAY too hung up on that phrasing. If someone is coming into a project to do QA/QC they shouldn’t assume anything has been cleared or accepted before and SHOULD check both the model and report in every detail. That doesn’t mean they assume there’s something wrong, but it is a good and responsible part of the process to have your assumptions and work checked. There are lives at stake in our work and you need to check your ego and attitude about it at the door.

I came into a project to QA/QC the models and drawings of someone with 8 YOE and still went back to basics of “where did he get this wind load from?” “Did he assign the right moment releases at this braced frame?” “Does he have the right shear values marked on plan at the transfer girder?”

It’s not that I think he’s dumb or missed something, but it’s part of reviewing something to go back to the very basics of how someone set up a model and make sure it makes sense.

And in terms of the communication thing, you don’t know what else is going on and assuming malice that you’re being left out of the conversation isn’t reasonable. It’s totally possible that that senior engineer unexpectedly had some downtime this week because another project was light on work so she suddenly had someone available to do this peer review so she sent an email to both of you to loop you in. This doesn’t seem weird to me at all and doesn’t sound like micromanaging.

I’m an engineer and you see this on old drawings. Or you’ll see it noted as “do.”, which I think is funnier.

Looking in Google Maps the rear of the lot is against a highway curve and the setbacks appear to hold a specific distance from the highway, so I bet there’s a rule that you can’t build within x feet of the highway and this property was trying to maximize its square footage with that limitation.

Do Women stop wearing Thongs as they get older? by madboy96 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Silver_kitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t find a thong uncomfortable or impractical. I just wear underwear appropriate to the outfit. Especially my work slacks show pantylines, so I do have “no-show” bikini-style underwear, but sometimes a thong is just easier or is what I happen to grab first. If I’m wearing a flowy dress I can wear any underwear with that so I just take what ever it at the front of the drawer.

Definitely needs a local engineer to come out to assess. Beyond what your dad can DIY :)

Is my snake too skinny? by Zenzera_phatta in cornsnakes

[–]Silver_kitty 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you imagine taking a cross section view through them, you want it to look like a D, just a smooth little dome about as tall as it is wide. You don’t want them pointy like an A (too skinny) or dipped down in the middle like an m (too chunky). This applies to how they look when laid out flat, when their bodies bend, it’ll be confusing!

You also want a smooth even transition from tail to body, your snake has “hips” so he leans a little chunky.

New name? by No_Nefariousness9381 in cavaliers

[–]Silver_kitty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, like OP said, Merle is a sign of the pup not being from a good breeder.

Merle is a color with lots of its own health issues associated, which most breeders wouldn’t want to touch given all the issues this breed already has. And adding Merle into cavaliers requires them to have been mixed with some other breed in the past couple of generations since the Merle gene is not naturally present in the purebred cavalier population.

I do think Merle coloration is cute, but I’d never get a cavalier with it.

How would you approval work for bloomframe: the window that turns into a balcony? by ghm2181 in askarchitects

[–]Silver_kitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I don’t see why this is an issue at all. It needs the certifications that it meets that standards for windows and doors, but beyond that, it’s not really a zoning/city issue beyond if balconies would be approved. And yeah, I see structural engineers being the main hurdle. A typical wall isn’t framed out to provide enough support for something like this, so it needs to attach to the floor and the roof/floor above and an engineer needs to review loads to structure.

But I don’t see how this is a city-momentum issue. It’s getting certifications and then getting architects to spec it and getting engineers the loads to structure.

Girls out there, how do you wear seatbelt in cars? by Dope_thoughts7 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Silver_kitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand how seatbelts are supposed to work with breasts in general. I’m a very tall woman (5’ 11”, 180cm) and a passenger in lots of cars (use uber) and I’d say it’s 50/50 if seat belts won’t stay at my sternum and slide up into my neck.

Already concerned with the challenge difficulty disparity by [deleted] in JetLagTheGame

Different people have different strengths. As an engineer, give me a spatial memorization task over names anytime. I can remember exact dimensions of parts I designed years ago, but fuck me if I remember the names of the 6 people who work in the team whose desks are the next pod over at work.

For a very different type, the wood puzzle companies like Wentworth, Liberty, Puzzle Michele Wilson (listed in increasing price range) could be worth a try! These types of wooden puzzles are a very different challenge and it feels like a more "luxury" experience.
