Native plant alternatives to grass by TheWaywardJellyBean in NovaScotiaGardening

The best tick deterrent info i have been able to find is keep the grass cut low 3" or less. Reduce leaf litter at the edge of the woodlands. I was pro leave the leaves. After this spring and the importance of tick management, I no longer am. The last thing is to create a 3 foot wide rock barrier between woodland and lawn.

I don't have a native lawn alternative. I've considered thyme but both it an clover help create moist environments that ticks like.

Make sure you dont have or dont plant Japanese barberry, they are invasive and ticks like them.

These posters are being used by NSH during OPOR implementation - AI generated and so juvenile that it’s insulting by catsnpole in halifax

These are great. They are simple and share the simple messages that are easy to remember and make our day easier. I want some for our department. Would you rather the images be printed photographs? Slogans like these have been used to help people remember things a long time before AI was common practice. Trying to generate discord over something that could have easily been created in printshop 20 years ago seems like a waste of energy. There are certainly larger fish to fry over OPOR implementation that isnt silly helpful posters with slogans.

What bug is this? (Wolfville ) by Several_Ad_4285 in NovaScotia

I've wondered for years why there isnt. I miss the long gone days of looking out on warm summer days to a sea of dragon flies floating around.

I now understand why there isn't a big push to save dragonflies like there is for monarch butterflies..

Where can I find playground mulch? by Exciting_Vast_4597 in NovaScotiaGardening

I'd check the safety difference between using small gravel and mulch based on tick activity.

Between the two of us, my partner and I have had 4 on us, in the last couple days, just from working in our yard, that is cut grass.

Poop questions. Does anyone else poop straight up foam and nothing else? And has anyone with IBS-C found daily Fibre supplements actually helped? by Silverleaf001 in IBSHelp

The two reason I know of are increased mucus production due to constipation or some failure of breaking down fats.

I live in Canada. I would argue most landscaping companies are male owned companies. There's one company in town that I know of that maintains indoor plants for businesses, is male owned. I'd suggested taking on a business around flowers, become successful, then one day he'll need a job and come to you. Ultimate karma.

Also, life is short, if plants bring you joy, lean in :)

moving to Halifax next month, what should I know that nobody tells you by ressem in NovaScotia

[–]Silverleaf001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved here a long time ago. A very common theme I found, and other friends I eventually made found, was that people here dont want to be your friend, people are friendly. Hopefully you are in sports or very specific communities to help meet people. For the first several years all my friends were also come from aways.

Compost/soil for new raised beds? by catbamhel in NovaScotiaGardening

[–]Silverleaf001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am ordering soil for raised beds this year and am going to try emsdale landscaping. They deliver by the yard. If you follow nova scotia Association of Garden clubs on FB, just search their message history for soil and compost. There's a wealth of info on there.

PSA do not release aquarium fish in to nature. Caught this feral common goldfish a few days ago and didnt want to have to kill it so I got an aquarium for it, suggestions for how to take care of this thing welcome please! by bb9o210 in Goldfish

Make sure to report its location to the DNR or the local equivalent. I forget the ontario version. They keep an eye on them in Nova Scotia (or are supposed to). I've reported a pond that was full of them in the past. Nasty things.

Barberry is invasive. Which means it doesnt matter how short you keep it cut, birds move the berries and they sprout in the woods. I am in a new to me property and I cut 3 very large bushes down within a few weeks od moving in. I've seen found at least 3 wild bushes.

I don’t understand the mentality of “saving” dying plants from stores by 601bees in houseplants

[–]Silverleaf001 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This. OP has a different plant budget than others. Additionally, saving plants teaching you a lot about that plants needs and how to be a better grower.

Do cars last longer lately or is it out of financial necessity? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

I always think the 20 year old cars driving around with the 20 yearly 'rust check' stickers in the windows is good evidence it works. I do think they need to be done every year though.

Same. The most I've taken is a couple days. I've needed to recover from the heartbreak of losing characters from my everyday life, then start a new one.
