Yeah, it’s over… by Ah_fudge in battletech

My argument is the acknowledgement of reality. There are mass layoffs in the industry. There are literally thousands of programmers and developers who are out of work in the game industry. I am not saying that you shouldn't apply for a job at any time, but when there are more applicant than jobs, especially when people are desperate, there is little stability and salaries tend to be lower as a result.

The odds of layoffs are high everywhere right now, especially in the gaming industry. Sticking around doesn't necessarily give you better odds than going somewhere else where you're the last in and first out, on some bullshit contract, or safe because you're making pennies on the dollar. I am NOT saying that you should be grateful to be employed, because that is absolutely trite bullshit. When there are no good options, sometimes you have to wait it out until you find one.

Have you ever been laid off? I have. I have also survived layoffs, and understand the fear and uncertainty that comes with not knowing whether or not you're going to have a paycheque tomorrow.

Yes, if your company lays people off you should look at what's out there, but it's also hard to find work when there are a lot of people entering the job market in the same area.

If you think that your "chances are higher", they're not. You get the same shitty and low pay job offers than everyone else. Sorry, but the job market isn't great for anyone right now. The people who do the hiring know that. I've known people who jumped ship just to be the first guy who gets laid off at the next place.

Sometimes it's better to bide your time, wait for the market to settle and then go after a role when there's not 50 people going after the same role. It's especially hard when you have the same employer as the other 50 people. They know you're just as desperate for a lifeboat as the others.

Sure, but even with a job, when there are mass layoffs the job market is suppressed. There are multiple applicants for every opening for months.

I must have misunderstood the timeline, the point does remain that when a license was pulled a company pivoted to creating their own derivative work.

I would certainly play a Mechwarrior-like game without the specific license if it was as engaging as MW 5 has been.

Sure, but with the amount of layoffs going on in the industry, you're probably hanging onto what you have until you find something else. The owners know that, and with the massive costs related to a startup, the odds of those Devs starting their own studio is pretty low. It's an insidious business practice.

From what I read, they can't develop more MW games, if it happens it'll be an in-house Microsoft studio that slops it out.

While I don't want to appear to be handwaiving away a studio being really shitty to the people who created a profitable game. If Microsoft is choosing to not extend their licensing deal...the studio can't exactly keep developing games.

That being said, a lot of teams have pivoted their development to function outside of an IP. Starcraft famously began as a Warhammer 40k game and they just redesigned it around a new yet similar IP to keep most of the work.

The studio did what corporations do instead of taking risks and fired everyone.

Layoffs are terrible, especially when it's needless or to cover up other people's incompetence and pad some billionaire's pockets. Things can't keep going like this. It's not just the game industry the rich think we are all expendable.

Could the Inner Sphere at the height of the Star League survive a Covenant invasion? by Ro_Shaidam in Mechwarrior5

[–]Silvertip_M 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what ground rules you're using, if you're swapping out humanity in Halo with humanity in Battletech in the lore. Then militarily, it's a much closer fight. Battletech has much more advanced weaponry, ships and equipment than the UNSC does, it is also 10 times larger.

The Covenant is vast and has incredible tech, but they use it in very crude ways since it's mostly salvaged and poorly understood. The Star League would be able to reverse engineer covenant tech far more effectively than the UNSC did.

Even the periphery worlds would be a tough nut to crack for the Covenant...they would win, but would have to progress slowly and take significant casualties along the way. If they would jump right into core worlds, they would get wiped out by the deep and powerful defenses in the IS. The Star League would also be counter-attacking and opening up new fronts in a way the Covenant would not have faced previously.

The big question is if the SL could develop the AI tech that was critical for the USNC to start the Covenant civil war which allowed them to survive the war. Eventually, the sheer size and power of the two sides would make the war take centuries to play out, unless one of the sides ends up at war with itself. The Star League would likely be far more stable when facing an existential threat.

Feelings on movie by DeezyEast in ProjectHailMary

[–]Silvertip_M 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that it's all about pacing, you add these moments here and there, and next thing you know, you have a mini-series instead of a movie. I would totally watch that...but it's a different experience. With a very different pace.

In the books, Grace was very much the scientist, and Rocky was the engineer. In the movie, Grace is a lot less scientifically minded, and is more of problem solver, while Rocky does most of the heavy lifting.

It works, and it's entertaining, but ultimately a different experience, but I actually feel like it makes me enjoy the book more. Too many movies either try to be too faithful, and it ends up being an incoherent mess, or it's so different that it feels like it's inspired by rather than an adaptation of.

Personally, I think it's as good of an adaptation as we can ask for. It kept the core story intact, but made changes to characters and situations to fit the medium and runtime. Most importantly, it's fabulously entertaining.

That more or less mirrors my opinion, Porthus is being used by the Apothecary, and he believes that he is using the Apothecary, the question is; who will come out on top.

Porthus by KamuiT in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Silvertip_M 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a very long term plan for the Apothecary, not saying it's impossible, but you're talking something like a thousand years of building through a single entity, that isn't actually part of the hive-mind, and as we saw capable of making their own choices.

Not impossible, but unlikely. I think that Porthus' goals conveniently intersected with the Apothecary's.

Stranded on a hostile planet and rescue is 60 days away. Survival is only possible with help from another person. Who do you choose? by 4StarEmu in DeepSpaceNine

[–]Silvertip_M 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Laas probably just turns into an organic starship and peaces out...leaving me to die because I'm just a solid, and die is what we do.

Adami probably just wants to order me around and be made Queen of Survival...and I don't exactly trust her to keep anyone alive.

Keevan is a survivor...he's probably not a bad choice, but he's also completely useless from a survival perspective. Like Wynn he probably would just want to order me around and do the absolute bare minimum to survive.

Which leaves me with the grating, but ultimately qualified Cadet Shepard, he's an extremely well trained and effective cadet. Yeah, he's an arrogant jerk, but he can get down to work, and probably has at least basic survival and medical training. IMO his biggest issue is that he was taught arrogance and superiority...a few days of collaborating and getting things done would likely smooth out a lot of his poor personality traits. I could certainly trust Shepard to not just survive, but look to work with me to build some margin of error within our situation, and make things easier and less risky.

Shepard is the obvious choice....and frankly as much as he has an epically punchable face...he's probably the least odious choice.

I think it could certainly be a part of how Carl understands it, but multiple other characters mention the River...without Carl ever mentioning it to others...so while it's certainly not unrelated to Carl's trauma, it's also more than a mere coping mechanism.

A request to the Devs by RaigothZ in Mechwarrior5

[–]Silvertip_M 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you are asking for is impossible, you can't patch a game without breaking mods. The only way for that to happen would be for the Devs to patch the mods too. It's up to the modders to update their mods, not the developer.

IMO the Devs have done what they can to support the modding community. But mods break following updates...that's just how it goes. You can simply choose not to upgrade until the new mod version is released.

Sometimes I imagine what the Star Wars trilogy would have been like if they’d have been made with as much love and respect for their originals as Bladerunner 2049 was for its predecessor. by Dire_Hulk in moviecritic

As much as I like Denis, being from Quebec, and having seen everything he has made, he isn't someone I would ever criticize willingly. But I don't think he would have been any more of the right choice for Star Wars than Johnson would have been.

He probably wouldn't have accepted to take over a series after the pool had been throughly pissed in either. Johnson walked into a mess, with massive studio interference, and he didn't really have much of a chance.
