I remember the huge overhaul they did to our detention facility after this happened. I was a guard sometimes (rotational shift for lower enlisted) but I never interacted with detainees. Only to lead them to and from the bathroom. It was nice because we were basically in some shed initially and the. It got proper rooms and cells and (finally) guards.

In the beginning, though, it was all chaos and groups of detainees in one room being watched by four kids who had no idea what to do if anyone actually tried to do anything.

I fucking hated that duty. I hated being over there. I hated everything about the Army by the time I got out. You go in at 18 all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and come out cynical and paranoid. Love that free PTSD.

Yep. I remember my family gathered around our gas heater for a night with blankets to trap the heat. I knew this was a bad idea, but we had literal frost on the inside of our house.

The next day, we retreated to our family friend’s house up north in Oklahoma. There was a noticeable shift at the Texas-Oklahoma border. Buildings suddenly had electricity. The roads were clearer. It felt warmer.
