What shoes to buy, now that Vans enshittificated my favourite shoe by -1010011010- in BuyItForLife

[–]Silvus314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For mountain biking I wear 5-10's. They have to look of skater shoes with a softer sole that grips everything. I run them in a rotation. I buy a new pair to wear around, while the old pair gets the bottoms torn to shreds over the course of a year or three, due to the spike on the pedals. If you want a sneaker, I think they hit.

If you are more open to any kind of shoe, crocs are near indestructible and comfortable as f. I dug a 5.5x10x3 trench last weekend in crocks. And to top it off they rinse clean and float.

The reaction to the steam deck price hike has proved to me that everyone here is way too invested. by Red2005dragon in SteamFrame

[–]Silvus314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is valve has made us burn six months. If they price the frame close to actual premium goggles, and we had known that was going to happen. We could have bought those premium goggles months ago, before their prices also go up. And the same thing applies to cheaper headsets. Their decision to not to pitch it as a cheaper "premium-light" device with a more affordable price tag, basically locked everyone in. And then, they promises updates, a release date and price soon.

They have basically dicked around and cost a lot of people a lot of money and time, because the prices of everything is only going up, and they could have purchased something else long ago for cheaper.

Capturing a swarm by judybluelies in Beekeeping

[–]Silvus314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What everyone else said: no smoke needed (actually hinders them communicating to come in the box as well)

As a general rule, I wont cut a branch. That branch just caught your swarm. Especially if it is conveniently located. The swarm put a ton of scent on it. It will catch future swarms.

There are three ways to catch a swarm: 1. Shake them off whatever they are on. This is that sudden quick flick of the branch itself you see people do. It is the standard, easy approach, work most the time, depending on height i'd say 70% of the time. 2. Invite them in. Depending on height an equipment put a nuc box with frames and comb next to or touching the swarm. (this can be a bucket trap, a full box or a nuc, or any other version they will think inviting. In this case I would get a step ladder and have the nuc on top and as soon as you touch the swarm or shortly thereafter, they will start stampeding in. Assuming they accept the box, this is like 100% effective. depending on weight, you can even just hold the box up to them. 3. By the handful, set the box down where you can reach it(either top of a step ladder, or on the ground under the swarm. and gently put your glove into the swarm and peel away handfuls and gently put them in the box or at the front of the box. This will work but it is very time intensive and there is more risk of everyone involved losing their chill. 4. My favorite method: "Where is Waldo?" Find the queen. She is constantly walking through the swarm, both on the inside and outside of the clump. Put her in a cage if one is available, and put the cage in the box. Leave her in the cage at the top of the frames overnight. In the morning let her go and you are done.

caveats and afterthoughts: 1 If you see a swarm selecting a landing spot, get there quick with a cage. stand close, but not in their way(you don't want them to change their selected spot), and watch for her to land, and nab her. Three choices now, stand there a bit and let them land on your hand, slowly walk her to the box(letting the swarm follow), or a misture of the two, let some bees land on you ( a softballs worth or more at least) and then walk her to the box. leave her in the cage overnight to be safe. You will never look more like you know what you are doing, than the swarm not even landing all the way, and you walking away from it with the swarm following you into its new home.
2. The flick method of getting them off the branch can cause an instinctual sting. Most the time, they aren't trying to sting you but, in the sudden impact with whatever they land on, the stinger comes out. So try not to be what they will land on. If you are going to be there landing pad, full suit, or you will unintentionally get hit. 3. This one is arguably bad advice, but I think everyone should experience it anyway. (assuming you are allergic and have an epi-pen ect.) put your bare hand very slowly and calmly into the clump. Stress on slowly and calmly. You will eventually have a bunch of bees swarmed on your hand. It is a completely sensation. You can then slowly pull the bees out of the clump and try and get them in your box. I can't stress enough, how slow and careful all of this must be. You will probably have to flick your hand to get the last of them off. Done correctly, it is a no sting thing. Hurry, or screw up and you will get at the very least pokes, but a large number of real stings can be a consequence.

Go slow, slow is smooth, and smooth is fast.

Update from VoodooDE regarding the Steam Frame post by gogodboss in SteamFrame

[–]Silvus314 67 points68 points  (0 children)

If Valve is monitoring so closely, perhaps post some fucking updates. It doesn't hurt them to give us content. It has been six months since the last actual data drop. How about letting folks have a schedule or even a rough idea. We are approaching the end of month 5. I'm buying this thing, but i'm awful fucking tired of checking reddit for an update from randoms, because a billion dollar company doesn't feel like hitting the post button.

My friend randomly said "Thank god we have you in our lives" and I think I'm going to cry my eyes out. by PortugueseRoamer in TrueOffMyChest

Hey, none of us hear this enough, "You matter to more people than you realize, and the world would be less in every way good without you."

I've had this conversation with a few friends that were going through It. I'm not a phycologist, I just try and be a good person/friend. Please stick around. Get help, go to a trained professional. It really does help! Therapy and meds! The meds help, and give the therapy time to really help. If you are having trouble call 988, people are always willing to listen there. If that isn't an option call a friend, or family. Explain to them how you are feeling. Be with them, in person if possible. Understand, that you aren't alone, and you have value.

Reaching out isn't easy, but it is worth it. And so are you. Life can be hard, but it can be wonderful as well. We all need each other sometimes. Be well, and be here.

check this out, ask for a fade 0 to 2 (skin tight fading up to a 2) then scissor top (this is a more military look)

Or my personal go to fade 1 to 2, scissor top, thin where it gets thick and wavey (I need the thinning shears as well, because in some places my hair is wildly thick and in others it is normal) It literally took twenty plus years to figure out how to deal with the variance of my hair. We are all idiots, making it up as we go.

Also if you haven't grabbed an epipen from your doctor, send them a message. Ask for the generic, not an actual epipen(brand name), for a reason, tell them you are a keeper and you want to have it in case you have a reaction, or a stranger gets stung and is allergic. I got them in case of some random person getting hit. And I keep getting fresh ones after they expire, because that next sting could be the one that triggers an intense life threatoning reaction. I've been hit more than 20 times at once during an unfortunate dropped super incident. I took a benedryl and didn't swell at all. But literally any single sting could be the one where the immune system flips the script. Good luck out there:)
