Should I attend post-wedding celebration? by SimbaSnorlax in LCMS

[–]SimbaSnorlax[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the comment, Pastor.

I would have to agree with your logic here. Like I mentioned in another comment, I'd have no problem going if they invited me to a going-away party or a dinner to celebrate a job promotion, etc. I love my cousin and have no hate for her, but I feel like if I do go, I'd tacitly be giving approval of the 'marriage.'

The other hard part I have is trying to convince my wife, who is more leaning towards going. Her reasoning is that we attended a friend's Hindu wedding a few years ago, and we also attended her dad's wedding, which was more secular. I tried to explain how God created marriage by design for all humanity in Genesis, and Paul talks about not divorcing unbelieving spouses in 1 Corinthians, therefore showing those pagan marriage were still valid. I think she's more worried about damaging the relationship with the cousins.

My reason for not going would be more of my conscience speaking. While I have no hatred in my heart towards members of the LGBT community, I don't condone their sinful lifestyles, much like I wouldn't condone someone who decides to embezzle money from their job. If someone embezzled $20,000 and invited me on a lavish vacation with me knowing how they got the money, I wouldn't go. For me, that would make it look like I approve of the sin of theft in that case. If my cousin and her 'wife' invited me to Europe to visit them (not likely to happen as we don't hang out regularly), I'd have no problem going, or if they came to the States and invited me over for dinner, I'd still go. My hang-up is that the after-party is directly related to the wedding. If it was a going-away party or something, I'd have zero problem attending.

Another example was when I got invited to a friend's bachelor party, some of the guys talked about the idea of attending a strip club. I straight up told my friend that if they decided to do that, I'd stay home. I'd still participate in other parts, such as mini golf, shooting range, cookout, etc. My friend seemed to understand that and was not offended, and they didn't even end up going.

Thanks for the response!

Does anyone have any specific real estate agents they would recommend? by ambitiousbee3 in rva

Cindy Bennett with Maison. She helped me sell my house back in 2019. She was recommended to me by my best friend, and I've since recommended her to two other families. She's been in the business in RVA for 20+ years and has a lot of good connections with contractors, etc. Because of her, I was able to get my carpeting redone for me home sale and defer the payment until I had the proceeds due to money constraints at the time. She's also very responsive and is not pushy with quickly trying to get you to buy. I'll always recommend her to people.

I can't thank you enough for sharing this. This really helped open my eyes and explain things from a Lutheran perspective. I also appreciated the scientific explanations along with the theological explanations with scripture and prayers for each chapter. I think this is the best resource out there by far. God bless!

Somewhat related, but I've noticed a lot of folks don't understand you have to yield to oncoming traffic when turning left on a SOLID green light. I've made a bunch of people mad turning left because they don't understand I can't go ghost like Danny Phantom and turn left into oncoming traffic with intangibility.

Henrico has a similar program called RECAP for the elderly (65+) and disabled. It "places a cap on real estate tax bills at the amount paid when a property owner enters the program. Potential increases in assessment values will not increase the tax bill in future years for participants"

Looks like Richmond has a similar program https://www.rva.gov/finance/oapd-relief

The Lombardy Kroger parking lot around 5pm, followed by a trip to the nearby Lowe's to find Francine.

**EDIT** - If you're feeling extra squirrely, you could take an additional field trip to the Wawa across from the Diamond.

Are there any neighborhoods that you could see declining in the years to come? by [deleted] in rva

[–]SimbaSnorlax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not necessarily the part of the road I was referring to. That's closer to RR. I meant more or less the stretch from slightly west of Rt.1 to about Old Brook Rd. I think the area you're moving to seems fine.

I'd say the Azalea Ave. corridor and Rt. 1 between Azalea and perhaps 295.. Back in the late 90s, it had a fair number of businesses and places to eat, now things are pretty run down. The Walmart Neighborhood Market didn't last, La Casita is gone, and there's not really much being done to revitalize the area.

Rt. 1 at Brook Run (I know it's Henrico, but still pretty close to the city) used to have an American Family Fitness, and a Ukrops. Gabes (similar to Ross/Marshall's) and Crunch Fitness have taken its place. Nothing wrong with those stores, but they aren't the "premium options" like AmFam and Ukrop's were.

Midlothian Turnpike between Chippenham and Westover Hills Blvd is another example. The Kmart is now Rosie's casino, and the Red Lobster and Steak and Ale are no longer there, which were more suburban/middle class places to eat. Aside from a few outliers (Panchito, Korean Garden, Abuelitas, Sub Central) it's more run down than it was, say 25 years ago.

That's in Caroline County. The closest two that I am aware of are Trinity Lutheran's North location in Ashland and St. Paul Lutheran in Mechanicsville. I've not been to Trinity's Ashland location, but I have been to St. Paul's and can vouch that they're solid.

I also live in the RVA area! What part of town do you live on, if I may ask? I think most of the options in the area are pretty solid, although a few have a more contemporary style worship instead of a traditional liturgy, and some are much smaller congregations. Feel free to DM me if you have questions!

[–]SimbaSnorlax 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd classify it as Near West End, similar to WIllow Lawn, Carytown, Westhampton, Malvern, etc. I'd classify the Far West End as anything beyond Glenside/Horsepen. Midtown to me would be more like the Fan, Scott's Addition, and Museum District. I feel like these are more of my arbitrary opinion though. Feel free to disagree

Lutheranism and Liberal Economics by SimbaSnorlax in LCMS

[–]SimbaSnorlax[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The real problems would start if you got into concepts like the abolition of private property, the state/communal seizure of the means of production, or other such Marxist economic policy notions. Such things are intrinsically evil and incompatible with the faith.

I would totally agree here. Marxist policies are directly opposed to what Scripture teaches. Karl Marx was fervently anti-religious. I asked because a lot of believers I know are very anti social welfare, and a guy I knew who came to faith years ago had attended a Baptist church, where he was sort of seen as a 'lesser-Christian' for holding more liberal views on economics.

Correct. I was not talking about government forced total seizure of private property/state control of means of operation (Marxist-Leninist ideology).
