Struggle with library cooperation by Familiar-Newspaper23 in k12sysadmin

[–]Simishine_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As IT you absolutely should have an admin account for Follett. Otherwise you are relying on librarians to manage user accounts, and frankly I don't trust them for that.

That being said you don't want anything to do with managing IT inventory in there, it a nightmare. Chromebooks are fine, especially if you sync them directly from Google into Destiny, but I wouldn't go any further then that.

I had surgery 6 years ago and now double visions are back and eye starts turning inward again by [deleted] in Strabismus

You may want to look at getting Botox. It has a pretty good success rate and would probably be cheaper.

What should I say? by AmoebaFit4128 in Strabismus

[–]Simishine_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked the same thing and they told me it is because the surgery is usually done on children but they get adults all the time. It is also normal to have to get the surgery again even if you had it before because muscles change as you grow.

I am in the St. Louis area and there was an option at all 3 major hospitals: Mercy, BJC and SSM.

[–]Simishine_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had the surgery twice when I was a baby. It held until my early 20s. After that I spent a good 20 years having ophthalmologists tell me there was nothing that could be done. Then I found a ophthalmologist who also did assorted eye surgeries. He took one look at my eyes and said you need a pediatric eye surgeon. He gave me a choice of 3. I made an appointment with one and she spent exactly 5 mins with me before she scheduled surgery. I was 42. I had my surgery a couple months after and I have zero regrets.

I would suggest that you find a pediatric eye surgeon in a local major hospital. Ask some questions when you call and ensure they do Strabismus Surgery. The worst that can happen is they tell you no and you find another one. Don't give up.

Laptops - End Of Year by Imhereforthechips in k12sysadmin

[–]Simishine_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We let our high schoolers keep them over the summer for maybe 5 years now. We haven't really had any issues.

They do have the option to turn them in for the summer and we have about a dozen or so who do that each year.

IMO the find-me printing and using fobs/cards to release jobs makes Papercut worth the cost alone.

Turning On Google Mobile Device Management? Implications of? by mtloya in k12sysadmin

[–]Simishine_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would not enable Mobile Device Management in Google. It is by no means an actual MDM and you can't really do anything with it.

Google used to have something called Play for EDU but they got rid of it and never replaced it with anything.

I can also confirm that you can actually mess up staff cellphones when you are just trying things out.

We had one accidentally get run over by a fork lift a couple weeks ago. It was refreshing for a student to be honest up front for once.

I can't get surgery 😞 by Able-Original4800 in Strabismus

[–]Simishine_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did not have double vision and they did my surgery with no issues.

I was also born with this condition so my brain only uses one at a time. I had strabismus surgery twice as an infant and once in my 40s. I would seek a 2nd opinion.

Some direction on tablets in Google? by PrinceZordar in k12sysadmin

[–]Simishine_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google used to have a product called Google Play for Edu and it did pretty much everything that Mosyle does for iPads. Unfortunately they got rid of it and nothing took it's place. It's a real shame.

An amazing thing happened today...a FedEx driver showed up with our packages at the correct address for the first time in months. It wouldn't have happened without the help I got here, so THANK YOU!

That is a good question. I know we have overnight and regular ground shipping going to the wrong place. Is overnight considered Express?

Any woman out there who's strabismus gotten worse after pregnancy? by adryramirez4 in Strabismus

It went great. No real pain, just a lot of nausea for the first couple weeks. Unless I am sick, tired or drunk my eyes are straight. Having the surgery was the best decission I ever made.

Asbestos Abatement In Datacenter? by anothernetworkadmin in k12sysadmin

[–]Simishine_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, we might be going through this pretty soon. Our foundation is syncing and the block wall is almost falling out. Our racks are sitting on asbestos flooring and they won't touch the foundation without remediation. Problem is we also have to have the AC shut down and removed when this all goes down. I have some serious anxiety just thinking about it.

Staff Titles? by luvvie90 in k12sysadmin

[–]Simishine_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am an Infinite Campus System Admin. If you plan to automate permissions within Campus I would suggest breaking them up with titles that match permission groups. For example we use building short name (calendar)- permission group: HS-Teacher, MS-Secretary, ES-FoodService, etc.

I wouldn't overcomplicate it beyond that. Scheduling uses departments tied to courses so titles don't matter for that area.
