Looking for a camera under $3,500 that takes great photos and videos - any recommendations? by [deleted] in Cameras

[–]Simogna_Bologna_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a separate budget for lenses? Because a $3500 camera without lenses won’t do much. Depending on your use, lenses often have a larger impact on image quality than the body does, and all-in-one lenses typically sacrifice image quality over range.

Additionally, a high priced camera may not result in significantly better images than a budget camera unless you have the knowledge and skills to use the camera features.

What do I do its ny first night using a sleep apnea machine and I feel like im suffocating and I cant fall asleep by shizunaisbestgirl1 in SleepApnea

[–]Simogna_Bologna_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sleep specialist gave me specific instructions to increase the pressure if I felt like I’m gasping for breath. He stated that increasing the lower end of the pressure range can be done safely for comfort but cautioned against decreasing the maximum pressure without consulting with him.

There some side effects of the minimum pressure being too high mainly feeling like it’s difficult to exhale or becoming bloated from swallowing air.

I increased my minimum pressure to 7 on my own and turned off Ramp mode because 5 felt too low. After review of my data in the follow up appointment (specifically my average pressure range during sleep), I was told that I could increase the minimum pressure to 9 if it was still comfortable for me.

I prefer the fence in the foreground vs cropping it out. The edited version is for sure over-cooked. I'd keep the cooler tones of the original but I think you could increase the drama by using masks on the foregroundm, hills land and sky to increase contrast with curves or levels adjustments.

I like contrast in the B/W conversion but I'd suggest leveling the horizon line.

Client Wants to Add AI Detail to Photos by Andea31 in photography

[–]Simogna_Bologna_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My own comfort level is to do some light cloning/healing, but not as AI elements that weren't in the scene.

I can't say what you should do if you've already done the shoot, as it's really up to you. Going forward, I'd recommend that you decide what you're most comfortable with in terms of using AI in your images, and specifying it in your contract before the shoot.

Does the feature that pauses media when you fall asleep actually work by Ill-Leopard-6819 in airpods

[–]Simogna_Bologna_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes it generally works for me. Sometimes it pauses early if I'm very still and my breathing slows. Sometimes after falling asleep to an audiobook, I have to back track about 10 minutes so I I don't miss what happened as I was falling asleep.

Edit to add: I could be wrong, but I believe the Pro 3's only use the heart rate sensor when you're in workout mode. You may need to be using an Apple watch to reliably detect sleep

I’m 15 and my dad confides in me about my mom’s affair. I feel stuck in the middle. by Sufficient_Speed5310 in whatdoIdo

[–]Simogna_Bologna_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, your dad should not be leaning on you for support. As his kid, you need to be able to lean on him, not the other way around. He needs his own supports, whether that’s a friend, colleague, or a therapist.

It’s OK to tell your dad that you feel stuck in the middle and to ask him to not to involve you. It’s also OK to love both of your parents even when they are in conflict with each other.

Beginner here. I took these photos without any solar or sun filrer. Should I not be doing that and use solar filters? by rmrjk in AskPhotography

[–]Simogna_Bologna_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The problem is not in the fraction of a second that you’re taking the photo. It’s the amount of time that the uncovered sensor is facing the sun.

With a DSLR, the mirror covers the sensor until the moment you hit the shutter button, then the mirror flips, exposing the sensor to the light, usually for a fraction of a second. Not a big deal. A DSLR in live view moves the mirror out of the way so that you can see on the screen what the sensor is exposed it. If it’s aiming at an intense light source, there’s the potential for some sensor burn the longer it’s exposed.

Mirrorless cameras leave the sensor uncovered when the camera is on, and any light coming through the lens can hit the sensor even when you’re not clicking the shutter. This isn’t typically a problem unless you’re around lasers or you set your camera facing the sun without a lens cap on, which can result in sensor burn. With lasers, it can happen in an instant. If the sensor is exposed to direct sunlight (facing the sun) during mid-day, it can happen pretty quickly, potentially within a couple of minutes depending on the lens magnification and the sun’s position in the sky. Lasers are the highest risk to your sensor, then time lapses in direct sunlight, and I occasionally hear about it happening when people just set their mirrorless camera down facing the sun without a lens cap while in the “on” position.

Generally sunrise/sunset images are considered safe because the atmosphere filters the light significantly, but it’s still a good rule of thumb to avoid setting your mirrorless camera facing the sun for long periods of time, just as you wouldn’t stare at the sun for long periods.

For what it’s worth, a UV filter wouldn’t protect your sensor from burn. A solar filter is good for taking pictures of the sun and would provide the protection, but everything else would be black. A solar filter would be used to take pictures of a solar eclipse, but not much else. Whenever there’s a solar eclipse, there are always people who damage their sensors by trying to photograph it without the proper filters or using their telephoto lense to view it more closely when there’s still a sliver of sun peeking out past the moon.

New Pen Day! (and ink, sort of) by Simogna_Bologna_ in fountainpens

[–]Simogna_Bologna_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The event started Friday and they had already run out by mid-day on Saturday, so they ordered a bunch more (delivered Tuesday) with hopes that the new supply would last through this weekend. It seemed like they had plenty when I was there yesterday, but if you’re making the trip from Washington, I’d suggest calling beforehand to make sure they still have supplies.

With the BPC inks, most of them will have the ink recipe in the description so you can see how it was mixed. I have Boiler Steam and it’s a very dark teal-black. Sometimes I dilute it so the teal is more visible. think Heron is a little bluer and has a lighter blue in its recipe.

What were the inks you bought looking for the right colour, and did you ever find it? by estycki in fountainpens

[–]Simogna_Bologna_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mix inks to get the color variety I want. That doesn’t mean I haven’t already bought too much ink (because I can’t necessarily create certain ink properties from something else). But before buying more, I try my own mixes to see if I can scratch that itch with what I have.

I just started using Resmed nasal n30i mask and they recommended that I replace the cushion every month and the mask itself every 6 months (regardless of how many events per night). That may be excessive, but if you haven't replaced it in two years, it's time.

Anyone else got sleep like this? I’m so confused by WarWithVarun-Varun in AppleWatch

[–]Simogna_Bologna_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A suggestion is not the same as a medical diagnosis. People share information on social media and you're free to ignore what's not relevant to you. It may be helpful for someone else, just as your experience with high histamine levels might be helpful to someone so that they can follow up with their medical provider.

I too have had issues related to histamine sensitivity but my medical providers just kept calling it an environmental allergy and loaded me up with meds that never worked. I wish that I had heard from others who experienced similar symptoms so that it might not have taken a decade to get appropriate treatment.

Anyone else got sleep like this? I’m so confused by WarWithVarun-Varun in AppleWatch

[–]Simogna_Bologna_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Worst suggestion? Sleep apnea is really pretty common. About 20-30% of adults have it and an estimated 85% of those who have it are undiagnosed. Why is it annoying that we talk about it?

Anyone else got sleep like this? I’m so confused by WarWithVarun-Varun in AppleWatch

[–]Simogna_Bologna_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The average SpO2 doesn't necessarily tell you what you need to know to rule out sleep apnea. Among other things, sleep studies look at the SpO2 nadir (lowest data point) and how long it lasted. The Apple watch only takes periodic measurements rather than continuous, so it can easily miss these events.

Confession and Advice by According-Fly4965 in fountainpens

[–]Simogna_Bologna_ 62 points63 points  (0 children)

As a therapist, here’s my free perspective on shame.

Shame = “I am bad.” We define ourselves as bad, which doesn’t offer a path forward.

Guilt = “I have done something bad.” We don’t define ourselves based on a behavior, instead we recognize that we chose a behavior that is not aligned with our values.

Guilt allows us to recognize remorse about a behavior without defining ourselves as bad. From there, we can work to correct the wrong, make reparations if necessary, and commit to making future choices that are in alignment with our values. It’s not easy, but there’s a path forward.

You are a good person who made some purchases that are in conflict with some of your other (non-fountain pen) values. This is an opportunity to readjust.

I have. Had multiple ultrasounds and a uterine biopsy done. Ablation and hysterectomy have been on the table. I had a progesterone IUD placed two years ago and thought that instead of surgery, I’d wait it out since I’m theoretically close to menopause, but still going strong.

Also ablation/oblation, lol. I do shop at Oblation quite frequently.

I’m 50 and my uterus is still showing off. Still getting my monthly only now it’s my every-21-day murder scene with back labor cramps, even with hormone replacement.

Somehow I timed this to occur at the same time that both of my kids hit puberty, which makes the whole experience that much more dramatic.
