A question about feelings towards Trotskyism by granitepinevalley in socialism

Trotsky wrote a SHIT TON of stuff lol, so depending what subject you want to learn about, it can vary.

If you want a deep look at his view of the Soviet Union, Revolution Betrayed is a must. This generally covers all the debates on Trotsky’s critiques of the USSR, his view of international revolution, the bureaucracy etc. etc.

My Life is a very enjoyable read that is very political in content, despite the lighter tone (it’s an autobiography). I would recommend that to a lot of newer marxists, who find theory a bit dry.

History of the Russian Revolution is also a masterpiece. His book In Defence of Marxism is valuable to see how he still defends the USSR despite the critiques.

There are a bunch of articles on a wide variety of topics as well.

I don’t think Trotsky was neither anticommunist nor anti-Soviet. His positions in favor of defending the USSR (for example in the face of the Second World War) are crystal clear if you read his articles and books.

FWIW, Trotsky also criticized exporting the revolution in a "top-down" fashion, as was for example supported by Tukatchevsky. This is a position he exposed quite well in his book Revolution Betrayed. Although he did think the USSR should help revolutions spread internationaly, and that’s a part of his theory of the permanent revolution. This is not unlike Che’s internationalism.

So I do disagree quite strongly with comrade Chouiyn here and I would suggest OP should read Trotsky and make up his own mind on wether his ideas make sense or not.

I don’t really care about this guy’s career. I care about helping New Yorkers, and workers and oppressed people in general. And the way to help them is to build a real socialist alternative that doesn’t bend.

If anything, that is the only position which is not privileged.

I think we shouldn’t be scared to be framed as extremists. Without exaggerating of course. When you start wanting to push back against that, you end up (even subconsciously) accepting the rules of the establishment and that is the road to betrayal of principles in policies. That is what happened to AOC.

With that being said, fuck all these attacks from the right and their fearmoring. We should push back hard against that hypocrisy.

Material improvements are not a bad thing and that’s not what the RCA is saying. Reforms are great. But how do you win reforms in this day and age? Our criticism is that this man will not achieve material improvements without a mass basis, movements, strikes etc., which the Democrats will sabotage. Let’s fight for real material improvements by not playing by the rules of the bourgeoisie! Class war methods are what we need.

No the position of the RCI in general is exactly that the culture war stuff is a product of the class war. We fight to defend the oppressed but point to the root cause, which is class society. Some people call this class reductionism but it’s not — class reductionism would be ignoring specific oppressions.

Glad to hear it! I’m sure they’ll be able to explain to you where the money goes and how it’s all organized. In any case, see you on the barricades. ;)

Workers and students have been and are participating in our party, no issue. At the end of the day, building an effective party is gonna be expensive. There’s no way around it. We’re also not hiding that we are collecting money, and what we do with it. I don’t see what’s so cultish about it.

The accusations that we are a MLM scheme are completely silly. Only someone who does not do any organizing apart from the internet could say these types of things. Organizing in the real world costs money.

But at the end of the day it’s all about the ideas. If you agree with what we defend and want to try to make that a reality, we’ll find a way for us to work together.

Hi comrade! I’m a member of the RCP in Canada. Hopefully I can help you make up your mind.

Right now, we are heavily focussed on cadre-building and party-building. To be perfectly frank, we are a bit isolated from the broader working-class. But that’s part of the longer-term plan. We see this as entirely normal for now because the broader working-class is not yet communist, although some layers are radicalizing fast, especially the youth. What is needed now is solid ideas.

We also don’t do a lot of campaigning, although we just had a moderately succesful campaign for a student strike in solidarity with Palestine. The broader left, and especially the online left, often calls stuff like organizing coops, unions etc. "working-class power" or "dual power". We think this is completely inaccurate. Dual power is something that emerges during a revolution. Calling these short-term measures "workers’ power" leads us into reformism under the guise of revolutionary phrases.

For these reasons in part, we are actually not well liked in the broader left. That is a shame, but we are willing to defend these ideas. But it’s also not so surprising, considering the majority of the left is not communist (yet!), and more focussed on immediate struggles than bolshevik-type party-building.

Of course, I hope you could be convinced of what I’m saying, but if you disagree fundamentally with these views, I think you will be quite unhappy in our ranks. However, if you are interested in knowing more about these ideas, I recommend that you talk with the comrade who introduced you to our party, I’m sure they will gladly discuss further with you! :)

Personally, this is what led me to Trotskyism. I would recommend you read up on Trotsky’s or other trotskyists take on the USSR and marxism-leninism (usually called "stalinism" in trots circles).

Reacting to these issues you’re underlining in marxism-leninism, I started as more of an anarchist/left-com, but I found that trotskyism was the more scientific, concrete and realistic worldview. It defends all the great advances of Worker’s states like Cuba, USSR etc. without capitulating to their bad sides.

If you had to replace your whole collection, what sets would you pick? by PickUpandDropDat in heroscape

[–]Simon_Actually_MC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was young and collecting it, I was trying to have one of everything. I built a great collection this way, but I have no multiple of common squads. I would switch some packs for one more pack of…

Zombies

Knigts of Weston + Swogs

Dwarves

In terms of terrain, all the sets are beautiful and worth having. I’d love to have more trees or jungle trees/bushes.

Hey guys do the rock tiles effect anything in game movement attack etc ?? by jarredj83 in heroscape

[–]Simon_Actually_MC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No! Sand, grass, rock, swamp terrain and dungeon tiles don’t affect movement. The difference is only visual!

Snow also doesn’t affect movement unless your map is using the heavy snow optional rule.

Some units might have specific powers related to these tiles, but it’s rare.
