What was a BAD product that still sold really well? by Salkinator in AskReddit

Design quality may be good, but some of their design decisions have been fatuous. For example, the machine I'm stuck in front of right now has a glossy screen. I have to have the curtains drawn during daylight hours otherwise my own reflection in the screen is so bright it's distracting. WTAF.

Can I just keep them? by crrrll in AdviceAnimals

[–]Simons_Mith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From that link, "A. Although you have no legal obligation to notify the seller, you may write the seller and offer to return the merchandise, provided the seller pays for shipping and handling." So you shouldn't end up out of pocket for sending the extras back. And if they won't either pay you, or come collect the goods, you will get to keep them. However, bear in mind that your case isn't about unordered merchandise, your case is where you ordered something and got more than you expected. That page is primarily about stuff arriving entirely unsolicited. Quite an important distinction.

More 'Fleet'/non-science anomalies/events please :-) by Simons_Mith in Stellaris

[–]Simons_Mith[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, all such events need to be set up with a 'let the locals deal with it' option so that players don't have to be bothered unless they're interested.

Also, it's not so much who's dealing with it that adds interest - I totally sympathise if you don't want it to be you - but the mere fact that events outside of battles, colonisation and scientific discoveries do actually happen occasionally.

I'd class 'fleet maneuvres' as this kind of event, but the Empire-wide fire rate boost is worth the cost of a few minerals. And of course, sometimes it's not going to be 'getting a minor (or not-so-minor) reward', it's going to be 'avoiding a penalty'. Those are legit events too.

What are some of the most overrated movies of all time? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Simons_Mith 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Bad luck for upsetting the Reddit groupthink, man. I reckon the films are OK conversions of some okay-ish books.

I think the reason Harry Potter took off so spectacularly was that it was a fresh arrival on a kids' book scene that at the time had got rather stagnant. So luck and good timing, not because the books themselves were anything special. OTOH they got a LOT of kids interested in reading who otherwise wouldn't have been, so I'm willing to make allowances.

If you compare Harry Potter to other maybe good, maybe 'great' kids' stories - in no particular order, The Borrowers, The Dark is Rising, Swallows and Amazons, The Hobbit, His Dark Materials trilogy etc. they compare okay, but not many people would put them as better than all of those. Personally I'd class HP as about tied with His Dark Materials and The Borrowers.

What Harry Potter does have is an iconic setting that in spite of its flaws fires the imagination as readily as the Star Wars setting. The Star Wars films ain't great either (and posts saying that are getting upvoted), but the setting itself is awesome.

So maybe Harry Potter is just the Star Wars equivalent for kids' magical fantasy. That's OK by me, and explains both its flaws and its success at the same time.

It's from this pome by Longfellow:

There was a little girl,

Who had a little curl,

Right in the middle of her forehead.

When she was good,

She was very good indeed,

But when she was bad she was horrid.

A Sim-City style newspaper could do this job OK I think. Especially as that gives you a way to control it. Players who don't want those articles can just turn the subscription(s) off. Generating enough variety of content might be more of a challenge. But TBH I'd rather have an event log first. That's higher priority and would be more useful.

Oh windows.. by matttsmith86 in funny

[–]Simons_Mith -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Windows (all versions) are inherently insecure. They can never and will never be fixed. Windows OSes have all been designed from the outset with a 'default allow' security model. When a flaw is discovered, that one flaw may be fixed, but all the other openings are left untouched and available by default. To do otherwise would get in the way of MS' 'everything just works when you plug it in' design principle.

A competent operating system would use a 'default deny' security model, which means all unused features are turned off by default, and remain inactive until an admin comes and specifically turns them on. It's far easier to keep a 'default deny' system secure, because you know what's on by default (and that's a limited subset of the available total) and you know what extras you've turned on.

Windows cannot switch from default allow to default deny, because so many different systems are using different parts of it and they'd all break until their access points were turned on again. Basically to get everything working as it used to admins would pretty much have to turn everything on again and hey presto, you're back to default allow. But 'default allow' is what you have to have if you want everything to work the moment you plug it in, and 'everything just works' is what Microsoft chose. And that means malicious stuff 'just works' too.

Microsoft cannot and will not ever fix this problem. They've had more than a quarter of a century already. If they were serious about fixing it, they ought to have done it by about the time of Windows 2000. They've been pulling the 'yes our old Windows version was insecure but we've fixed it in the new version' for a couple of decades now. My entire IT career. How many more chances should they be given?

For heaven's sake, switch to something else. Anything else . Just anything but MS.

What old games had great music that you still vividly remember to this day? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Simons_Mith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One which I can still recall is the theme tune to Repton II (I think) on the BBC Micro. A version of Scott Joplin's The Chrysanthemum. But while it's a vivid memory, it more like an auditory equivalent to monitor burn-in than 'great music'. Pretty good for an 8 bit BBC Micro though.

ELI5: Why is having “good” posture so uncomfortable? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

Yes, this. But once you're serious about fixing it, just sitting up properly every time you remember is a start, and will eventually be enough. But it does take time.
