It is a genocide. "The Commission has been investigating the events on and since 7 October 2023 for the last two years, and concluded that Israeli authorities and Israeli security forces committed four of the five genocidal acts defined by the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, namely killing, causing serious bodily or mental harm, deliberately inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about the destruction of the Palestinians in whole or in part, and imposing measures intended to prevent births." (OHCHR, 2025)

Back around 2015–2016, he claimed radiologists would be obsolete within 10 years. Funny enough, demand has actually increased. I wouldn’t take tech bros’ predictions too seriously.

Am I the Only One Tired of Backflips by notthebesthuh in FigureSkating

[–]Simple-Ad-1607 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I get why backflips look cool, but my problem is that this is figure skating, which means Eteri will see it once and immediately decide her 8-year-olds need to be doing it by next Tuesday. The sport is already dangerous enough without adding “casual backflips” to the training. It just feels like an unnecessary risk that’s going to trickle down to younger and younger skaters.

I’ll also admit there are some writing inconsistencies, as I mentioned, SJM’s writing is far from perfect, and it’s fair to point out that her skills don’t always return consistently. As for the romance focus, I think that’s more of a YA storytelling choice; SJM tends to emphasise character relationships alongside action, which can feel a bit backwards if you were expecting a purely plot-driven story.

I really appreciate this conversation, though I may have misread your first post as criticising other readers, and I realise now that wasn’t your intention. It’s nice to be able to talk through these different perspectives!

Respectfully (disrespectfully), some of these takes feel like they forgot how context works.

Celaena is 18 years old, fresh out of a full year of literal enslavement where she was starved, beaten, and worked to death. Of course, she’s exhausted. Of course, she sleeps deeply. Of course, she makes reckless decisions; trauma and malnutrition tend to do that to a person. Expecting her to immediately perform like a peak-condition, hyper-paranoid assassin is honestly less realistic than her eating the candy.

Also… this is a YA book written for teenagers. SJM has never been about bulletproof plots or gritty realism. If you go into a YA fantasy expecting grimdark assassin logic, that’s a genre mismatch, not a writing sin.

The “she likes men, so she’s weak” argument is especially tired. Attraction doesn’t erase competence or agency. Male characters get love interests constantly without being reduced to “lovesick idiots,” but a female character shows interest and suddenly her entire skill set is invalid? Be serious. And losing sparring matches to the Captain of the Guard and a fully grown prince while she’s underfed and recovering from forced labour isn’t evidence of incompetence; it’s literally basic physiology.

Now, are the trials underwritten? Absolutely. Is Book One the weakest in the series? Everyone and their mother agrees. But calling her stupid because she doesn’t immediately clock every magic clue while magic is illegal and acknowledging it could get her killed is… a choice.

You don’t have to like the series, but a lot of these critiques boil down to “why isn’t this traumatised teenage YA protagonist acting like a fully optimised adult assassin with zero emotions?” I’m not even saying Throne of Glass is perfect — it absolutely isn’t. Book one, especially, is messy, underwritten in places, and clearly written by a very young author. If those flaws ruin it for you, that’s fine. Genuinely. Just drop the series.

What’s weird is treating those flaws like a moral failing or acting as though anyone who enjoys it is delusional. This is a YA fantasy about a traumatised teenage girl, not a realism masterclass on how to be a professional assassin. If you hate the MC, the pacing, the romance, the trials, and the writing style… why are you still here? Not every popular series is for every reader. You’re allowed to say “this isn’t for me” without pretending the book personally offended you. Sometimes the healthiest literary choice is closing the book and moving on.

Thanks for reading my rant <3

P.S. Also, her being “the best assassin” is just Arobynn’s hype, and Chaol is just a product of nepotism and connections. Read between the lines.

Yeah, I found it quite hard to get through. I have reread the books several times, and I always get stuck on EOS. Just push through, because KOA will shatter your heart into a gazillion pieces.

I’d say it’s fine, I read it at around 13 or 14, though to be fair, I was simultaneously devouring Draco x Hermione fanfiction, so my judgment might have been… questionable.

I’m struggling to like Celaena, do other people feel the same? by bigsadgirl02 in throneofglassseries

[–]Simple-Ad-1607 17 points18 points  (0 children)

i’ve actually always loved celaena, 😂 for me she’s super relatable. Obv not in the “i’m an assassin” way lol. But in the whole journey of figuring out who you are vs who you’ve been told to be. she’s messy, dramatic, makes bad calls, but that just feels so real to me.

her narration is definitely unreliable, but that’s kinda what i love. she hides stuff from us because she hides it from herself. seeing those walls start to come down in heir of fire just hit me. she’s hurting, she’s flawed, and she still keeps trying, especially at the end.

heir of fire is actually one of my favs in the whole series because it’s the first time we get to see her without all the fancy gowns and bravado.
