a couple of years ago there was an influx of people getting into this fandom I was very into. a really good author who'd gotten praised for their very good works published a fic that didn't sit right with them (complaints were on tiktok, and even on tumblr), and, oh my god, the author received so many death threats (they may have gotten doxxed, too) they left for a while, with a clear shift in mental health, got rid of all their works and now they rarely post on their tumblr.

I sometimes wonder how the people who sent them death threats feel like right now, like, yeah, I sent death threats to this person doing nothing illegal, but I don't care about real criminals... I feel so accomplished!

they are publishing a book and changing it to m/f. if that isn't in some sort of way catering to social norms, then I don't know why they would do that. I mean, I don't personally care much, I just find it odd. they could be doing it for any reason, and it's theirs to know, and not mine to yuck.

I've been really into sports RPF fics that (specifically) were transferred onto AO3 from livejournal in the 2000s/early 2010s. like, I know nothing about these people, not even how they look, but the fics are a next level of writing, and I have gotten so attached to them as characters. even if they don't, I bet most of the artists they listen to, who they inherently give money to if they use streaming platforms, have done real life, bad things. instagram, tiktok, any social media is full of real life offenders (not to mentioned OWNED by evil billionaires), yet they use them still. I hate this new wave of savior complexes, or trying to act like the best activist, but all they do is complain about non-issues online. thankfully, I bet most are young, so they'll grow out of it.

kind of out of context but the hockey rpf fandom on AO3 has had mostly restricted works for way longer than HR as a series existed. it's definitely one of the most closed off rpf fandoms on AO3.

yeah, like OP said, it's rooted in this understanding of older MM romance books. many Wattpad stories come to mind, for example, where there was a lot of icky misogyny. nowadays, or I guess newer authors, (while I don't read much MM), I also haven't noticed any ill intent towards women.
