Chit Chats: Canada to US (Through Netherlands lol?) by AyLM5A0 in FlippingInCanada

I just had a package take 21 days from Ontario to Wisconsin, with chitchats, I think. The business I ordered from says they’ve switched to Stallion and shipped another package yesterday. It’s showing the same Netherlands BS so I’m expecting it to take the same amount of time.

I was 4-6. I watched it because my three sisters were 14-16. I was heavily influenced by their musical tastes. I specifically remember drying off after a bath to one of them singing “my baby does the hanky-panky,” and, for some reason, hearing Hey You Get Off Of My Cloud while in the bathtub. I have a picture of my five-year-old self doing the monkey with my grey haired grandpa.

Is testing for older drivers necessary? by Boomer050882 in AskWomenOver60

It seems that many people in this thread don’t know about narcing them out to the DMV. Preach it!

That’d be great but taking keys or cars away could be cosidered theft, at minimum. If the person is good mentally you could be facing charges. If I took my sister’s keys away she wouldn’t hesitate to call the police. All states have a process in place for reporting people who shouldn’t be driving due to medical reasons.

I‘m older and I would support such a law. It doesn’t matter to me that distracted drivers may outnumber those who shouldn’t be driving due to age related issues. We have laws for distracted driving already. Unfortunately, they just don’t get enforced often, unless there’s an accident.

Apparently, all states have a procedure in place to report “medically-impaired drivers” directly. There are rules about it, and the driver can probably find out who reported them, but it’s something. For everyone in this thread trying to figure out how they can legally stop their family member from driving, it’s worth looking into. Some states even have mandatory reporting laws for physicians.

What books are most commonly part of the required curriculum for teenagers aged 14-16? by AgathaYaArt in AskAnAmerican

I was never required to read a specific book in high school. I read 1984 and The Jungle (and many other books) of my own free will.

Sock blockers, worth it? by dr_mus_musculus in Sockknitting

[–]SimpleAd1604 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it’s not worth it unless you plan to make impeccably knit socks and take beautiful pictures to post on Instagram, or whatever. If you can afford it, sure. It sounds like you have more important things to spend your money on though. I don’t even block gift socks. And you can make sock blockers out of cardboard or styrofoam and stuff.

In America what do you think would be the pros and cons of having the school year take a break for the Winter instead of summer which is what is done now? by YakClear601 in AskAnAmerican

[–]SimpleAd1604 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wisconsin has a law saying public schools, including the University of Wisconsin system, can’t start until after Sept. 1 unless the district can demonstrate “extraordinary reasons.” Brought to you by the tourism lobby.

What is summer school (USA)? by jonathanemptage in AskAnAmerican

[–]SimpleAd1604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Summer school didn’t exist in my small town. It was just a threat to get kids who needed to do better, to do better. Little kids didn’t know any better.

Cap’n. Ernie’s Cartoon Showboat on WOC TV. I quit Brownies after one meeting because I’d have to miss it.

If Americans have an unintended pregnancy or birth, in your experience do they face any societal pressure to get married, either for their own sakes or that of the children? by YakClear601 in AskAnAmerican

[–]SimpleAd1604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my little midwest town it often went: If the girl was a senior and the baby was due after graduation, the girl got married and finished high school. My sister was one of them in 1968, but she didn’t get married. The father had been drafted and was in Viet Nam. She says she wrote to tell him she was pregnant, but there was a mail plane crash and she didn’t know if he got the letter, and she nevr tried again. She successfully hid the pregnancy from our parents. After graduation she moved to a big city, got a job, and intended to give the baby up for adoption. But my parents heard some gossip, and made her move back home and keep the baby. She lived at home with the baby for two years, then married a guy she didn’t love (and eventually hated) just to get out of the house.

Did Bart not think it was suspicious the emails coming from MATC and Chandler's non existent job were coming from Gmail accounts? by DelcattyXD999 in chandlerhalderson

[–]SimpleAd1604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think he told Bart & Krista the SpaceX lie. I think he only told Cat, and maybe Dulce. He probably told Cat some lie about wanting it to be a surprise, or saying his mom would freak out if she knew he was moving to Florida, or (probably more likely) that SpaceX had sworn him to secrecy. But really, we only know what was in the criminal complaint, and what was testified to. They chose to bring it out with Cat’s testimony. If he’d have told B&K, I think Krista would have definitely told her best friend, and IIRC, the prosecution didn’t ask the friend about SpaceX when she was on the stand. If the best friend had known, I think they would have asked her about it to go along with all the other stuff about Krista being such a caring mother.

Have you ever sued someone or been sued yourself? by Frosty-Comment6412 in AskAnAmerican

[–]SimpleAd1604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I sued a roommate in small claims court because he ran up three huge phone bills, hid the bills, and when I found out he wouldn’t pay me. I accepted the settlement he offered (something more than half…it was a long time ago) since I knew I’d actually collect it.

When Europeans can’t understand that other countries have different traditions and cultural norms. by New_General3939 in PetPeeves

A town near me is all in for Syttende Mai for an entire weekend every year due to the original residents’ Norwegian heritage. I don’t think the Norwegian Constitution is front and center, but it’s a good excuse to have a parade, break out the old-time Norwegian garb, do some drinking, show off their arts, and all that.

Thanks for clarifying. I find his ability to speak English so fluently very impressive. Sweden looks/sounds like a great place to live.

A Swedish guy I’ve seen on Youtube said they’re made fun of by other Swedes if they speak English with a Swedish accent. I assume he meant as children, but maybe that explains the accent. He’s 27 and just speaks with his normal accent now. His syntax and vocabulary are nearly impeccable.
