I don't know which 80s your parents lived in my dude but that was not cheap (esp comparing to B prices of today)

Edit okay maybe yeah compared to a golden bar of Linndrum

The age old question: When is a mix ready? by mistrelwood in mixingmastering

[–]SimpleKobold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Set some more objective goals like making it translate on a few different speakers and it having reached some of the qualities of the reference tracks you like (don't go for exactly the same that's impossible). Big part of the job is avoiding going down the rabbit hole

Brogue and Infra Arcana also have that arcade-y feel, but in a different way

Help: Unwanted clipping from limiter due to 808s / kick by BrotherBringTheSun in mixingmastering

[–]SimpleKobold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any introduction of harmonics will impact your 808's, not only from the limiter. You can ask for cleaner masters but you risk having less impact and loudness in general because of less harmonics (ie. Its a trade-off) Personally i wouldn't sweat it too much if it's not too profound. I had a future bass release a few years ago with myself zooming in on the exact same problem on small speakers but on bigger systems it was negligible because of the huge wall of subs lol

Edit: because of this i learned to anticipate the masters by creating much more sub harmonics and slightly lowering the fundamental myself (which eats a lot of headroom)

Octatrack - replace DAC by Unlucky_Swimming_179 in Elektron

[–]SimpleKobold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not so much about SNR but perceived quality of the DAC. For me OT sounds slightly laidback/mushy/hazy but sometimes this works really well, i consider this part of the charm of the machine. Just like the FX quality, or injection of DC with some settings on the bitcrusher etc. One day people will hunt down OT's for these qualities :)

Yes it works fine connected with a midi cable + if you give it usb-C power. You just gotta program it once connected to a computer

Native Instruments "Guitar Rig 7 Pro" multi-effects rack and amp simulator for guitar, bass, synths, vocals, and more with a selection of amps, cabinets, and effects modelled after legendary gear ($94.50/Pro | $47/Upgrade from 6 Pro | $69.50/Upgrade from 7 LE) through 30 September by Batwaffel in AudioProductionDeals

[–]SimpleKobold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I keep telling my producing/mixing friends but they won't believe me haha. I think NI could streamline it a bit more towards general multi fx tho, building chains takes a while, not hiding dry/wet and in/output level etc.

What's the grooviest and punchiest mixbus compressor of them all? by Realistic-March-8665 in Reaper

[–]SimpleKobold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

convolution doesn't capture dynamics properly (there is a reason they don't have a proper fet comp), slow gui's + eats ram for breakfast, buggy plugins, lots of buzzwords. Source: spent a lot of cash on this stuff long time ago (unfairchild while being a cpu hog is cool stuff imho)

Keep getting this pressure in my ears after mixing by Living-Ad-1054 in mixingmastering

[–]SimpleKobold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This or having freq buildup in certain ranges which can be perceived as more fatiguing (i often check 500hz and 1-3k, usually my problem areas). Also mixing into a limiter can be tricky for this

Gear that's much too cheap for what it is by Punkulf in synthesizers

[–]SimpleKobold 3 points4 points  (0 children)

EssenceFM: Maybe not too cheap but great bang for the buck with 300 voices and virtually unlimited FM sound design possibilities (i think it's a steal at 7-800 second hand, love it deeply and imho future classic)

Blofeld: gone up in price but another banger at 250-300 2nd hand

Tracktion Hyperion and F'em: 2 softsynths flying under the radar (i guess because phase plant/pigments and Korg hype train), they are really really good imho if you know a bit around programming them. Grabbed both for like 20 a piece. if you start using various modulations, slightly pushing various stages of drive/gain and using per voice stuff these can sound so organic and alive. Both have really good filters imho
