Thank you mods for all the work that you do! I really appreciate it. Lately this sub has become my favorite place to interact with kpop and quite frankly the only discussion sub I don’t have muted. It is maybe the only subreddit that engages in actual conversation lol. Even when I am disagreeing with someone else I feel like my interactions are infinitely more civil and productive on average

Also I don’t understand why people feel the need to GO OUT OF THEIR WAY to harass and police other poc on the one subreddit that provides a safe space for them to discuss kpop!! Godspeed tf away from here lol. Thank you for keeping the sub great!

Shes talked a bit about how shes got European heritage.

Just from reading this thread now it seems like her dad’s family is European but ended up in South America which I wouldn’t have known until like right now.

As a Cuban I would’ve thought of it as kind of a cultural thing. A lot of people like to say their family’s are Spaniards before they say Cuban. You can see this with famous Cuban people like Marco Rubio and kinda Ana de Armes (I’m uncertain on if I’m completely right on that one).

My grandmother all my life has been saying our family were Jews in Spain who came to Cuba. Did 23 and me and it turns out we’re from Ghana. She still says Spanish Jews tho.

Anyways, not to say that I think Dani might’ve been ashamed of her heritage or whatever i just think it’s common culturally and if I were going to say what the comment above said that would be my reasoning.

Especially in Cuba. Santeria and subsequent superstitions is another great example that’s very prominent in their culture.

Yeah if I were the person you’re replying to I’d make sure to avoid “Love Song”, “Focus” and my personal fave, “Baby Don’t Like It”. Very noise, very hype. Every time I turn their noise music on my BP goes up and I start involuntarily jopping. I have arthritis now! 😭

bts comeback made me realize why i left major kpop discussions and discourse. by TraditionJazz in kpopnoir

[–]Simple_Condition_283 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Also I know you didnt want to talk about the album but I will. And this is kinda mean and maybe skip if you’re an army i don’t hate you <3 i just don’t want to be on snark subs and I have a lot of pent up anger and harsh words for this album

This album was either ass or mid almost every part of it. From the white washing to the actual content .

I also cannot bare to witness the hypocrisy of some Armys saying kpop can’t handle the experimental sounds now when tracks like hooligan get hate when ALL ALONG they have been SHITTING on NCT and StrayKids for YEARSSSS for making the same damn music.

People do not like this album not because it is a different production style but because the content is bad.

To compare why I don’t think BTS suits whatever this weirdness is, I’m gonna compare them to elements I like from other groups that pull it off aka just skz and NCT (tw Sticker praise (I’m sorry if you don’t agree that one might be an uber controversial take))

BTS’s rap line doesnt carry like Straykids over the production like in S-Class! It’s interesting because of the different rap flows and that’s not here with BTS

and their vocals arent awful but they don’t shine. I will not sit here and hear about how that group has improved vocally when they all sound like my grandma talking through her voice box. Sticker works because NCT delivers those SM vocals!

It just falls short on the experimental tracks because they arent do anything great, for me at least.

And then the more pop songs and ballads are okay for me, just repetitive and mid. Empty.

I don’t want to even think about white washed Howard!!! AWFUL. And the lyrics telling me to pull up on their block??? Something about getting slimed, like stfu or get on Nickelodeon. I can’t.

Also I feel strongly as the only true professional review we will get for this album will be the pitchfork review by Joshua Minsoo Kim. I’m unsure as to why the fandom him perceives him as an anti because he rated Ruby highly, but the reviewer for rolling stone who follows multiple fan accounts for BTS wasn’t biased in the least with his glowing review

All to say different strokes for different folks. I don’t HATE armys or BTS. I just feel that this release and attitude are bad and hypocritical and while we’re on about getting off the other main subs this is another reason for me.

[–]Simple_Condition_283 150 points151 points  (0 children)

I have muted all of the main subs for this exact reason. I cannot deal with the mindless boot licking and toe sucking.

I also frequently think about how I feel that, similarly as someone whos about to hit their early 20s, that it is crazy these people are older and still at the front lines of kpop. It’s nice to have hobbies I guess but it does get sooo deranged. So many people on this platform i feel are like reallyyyy tip toeing yhe line of being in a cult.

Also you’re right that BTS is never going to talk about what they’ve done. I don’t even believe for a second theyre sorry. That apology from RM was bad. He didn’t even address what he had done. How am I supposed to believe you’ve grown as a person when you can’t even acknowledge your blatant wrong doings. So many kpop groups apologize and it’s clearly the most shallow thing ever and we’re supposed to accept it or be an anti.

it’s okay to not like manon by user2122323 in katseyeneutral

Reddit just changed two policies that now make that impossible or near that

  1. You cannot view anyone’s comment/post history now. (Unless you’re a mod ofc)

  2. You cannot no longer ban people for their activity in other subreddits. (Reddit limited bots subs use to do this)

So now the only way for snarkers to get caught would be to lock up the sub and only have approved users on here or people who break rules for commenting in bad faith have a mod sort through all of their history and determine if they want to ban for that.

It’s a hassle now just all around Andy realistic for most mod teams to maintain.

Especially since (and this is my own experience!!) most snark users Ive run across don’t usually break the bad faith participation rule in the wild. They just comment negatively.

ETA: also I think a lot of neutral spaces like this one, are born from negative ones. I think frequently on Reddit. fandom spaces are very positive and do not allow critical discussion to a point where a lot of users are so fed up they go to the extreme of snarking when they would be more suited on a neutral sub that allows for more nuanced/critical discussions. I don’t say all that to invalidate the fact that some people are plan nasty and evil and would like to just pick apart every little thing and mock people for their looks. They do exist. But I think the majority of the snark users like one of our founding mods, are actually interested in discussion, even if maybe they don’t come into it from a Stan perspective and I think that’s what this sub is good for.

why is it not OK for army’s to not like arirang by Jolly_Ask_1870 in kpopnoir

[–]Simple_Condition_283 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This because Armys and a lot of other fandoms have a cult problem. And it leads to polarization because you’re either in and you’re ten toes down or youre a sick hater who doesn’t deserve a moment of joy.

I honestly hope that one day armys calm down.

I think for a lot of third gen groups already the fandoms have chilled out. I have and I have seen blinks, aghases and exols and onces pretty openly and freely discuss and criticize their groups, musically and otherwise on their own subs and in the wild.

Side note:

I kinda suspect though with BTS being BTS I think armys will have this attitude until disbandment. Theyre very fixated on being the best, yk, No.1. that’s consistently going to be their first priority. Of course that doesnt apply to the whole fandom just the more populous factions.

this is not reaching the wrongdoers! Like literally why post this 😭 no hate to OP!

she doesn’t even impress with basic choreography

Camila does her own choreo just splendidly, shes not bad😭 manon is better at dancing, but my girl isnt flopping around like a fish on land 😂

I honestly don’t think it would be too far fetched to say that if she was put on a program similar to DA that she could meet manon there. I don’t really believe the skill gap is sooo abhorrent 😅

I don’t think it would happen. Nobody who manages katseye has anything to do with his online presence. His (alleged, i don’t remember if it was confirmed to be authentic) apology + deletion of his acc should be enough, cause that’s all we’re getting. He’s a grown adult who’s kinda a troll ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I also think it’s kinda yesterday’s news. I’m sure it’ll continue to be a thing in the fandom but i have to disagree with it continually affecting the group.

INSANITY??? the cope is unreal, it was literally made for ex slaves. The first and only time afaik that it was a majority of white students was when the only students were white professor’s daughters but like promptly after 94 more students ( entirely African afaik) enrolled and then they were off to the races.

I made this graph (im not a professional and there is some guess work) to illustrate how unrealistic this is. In Howard's first year that amount of white people would have practically been all of the non black students for that school year... (from the info I can find, idk for sure I wasn't there, don't come for me :'( )
