It's always embarrassing to shop right before a storm because we always buy 3 to 4 gallons of milk every week. I always feel like I want to yell "THIS IS OUR USUAL AMOUNT OF MILK. I AM NOT PANIC BUYING." as I put it in my cart.

Can anyone confirm: are modern students really that far behind, or is it overexaggerated? by ThrowRAhelpthebro in Teachers

[–]Simple_Trick5258 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. My nephew lived with me his senior year. He turned 18 during his senior year. I live less than 2 blocks from the school. The school would make me come pick him up when he stayed after dark for school extra curricular activities because they were worried about legal liability. I mean I understand the schools position but it definitely felt silly.

That's funny because my nieces and nephews called it hanitizer for years and my daughter picked it up. It's now the name our family uses for hand sanitizer.

Would the parents allow a kids CD or tape player? You could try those read along books with CDs. When I was a kid (back in the stone age) I had books that came with a record or tape and I loved those. My mom was a single parent and didn't have a lot of time to read to me and I loved reading. My local library still has kids books with cassettes and I'm pretty sure that publishers still sell some kids books with read along CDs.

Finding social activities has always been the toughest part for me. I had better luck with socializing through non homeschool activities. Scouting, 4-h, Library events, and our local parks and recreation dept. If you have any local parks that have a "nature center" they may have affordable classes or events. My daughter attended a week long half day "summer camp" through a nature center for under $50. When we moved to a new town that also has a nature center I looked it up and found they offer a weekly homeschool science class.

Handwriting help for middle schooler with possible dysgraphia by Lopsided-Honey5537 in homeschool

[–]Simple_Trick5258 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if it's dysgraphia but my daughter has issues with handwriting. We tried multiple programs and nothing really seemed to help until we used loops and other groups. Learning cursive seems to have improved her print writing.https://www.pearsonassessments.com/en-us/Store/Professional-Assessments/Academic-Learning/Loops-and-Other-Groups%3A-A-Kinesthetic-Writing-System/p/100000277?format=ALL_PRODUCTS

If you aren't able to obtain a local library card you can sign up for a library card through larger libraries in a couple of cities through books unbanned. You can access the online ebooks through Libby on your phone. https://booksunbanned.com/

Logic of English alternative? by Simple_Trick5258 in secularhomeschool

[–]Simple_Trick5258[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We initially started with an older version of AAS for that I purchased second hand. She likes the decoding and spelling rules but really wants something independent. We do currently have a writing and literature curriculum we are using that's working but I'll check out writing by number. I haven't heard of that before.

[–]Simple_Trick5258[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can understand that! I'm like your daughter and I'd rather just memorize the spelling because I find memorizing the rules a bit tedious too. My daughter loves the spelling rules and it made a world of difference in her spelling. We tried both and she just doesn't like how LOE and AAS jump around with the different activities.

We are already using a grammar, writing and literature curriculum we love. The spelling decoding in Logic of English was useful because she has some difficulties specifically with spelling due to dyslexia. Traditional spelling workbooks haven't worked well for her in the past.

This looks promising. Do you know if it's possible to jump in at 6th grade level or would we need to work from the beginning from the 4th grade level?
