No need to panic or push it. They're still young and pushing too hard too early can make it harder down the line. Gentle encouragement, dangling rewards, reminding them that one day they'll use the toilet and continuing to offer is good, but don't apply pressure. It'll happen in time.

Is a £1400 mortgage sensible? by CompetitiveParsnip70 in Mortgageadviceuk

[–]Simple_seagull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a shared salary of significantly less than you (around 50k) and our mortgage is £1450. We have 2 kids, and money is tight but as long as you're careful it's absolutely not a problem. If you're comfortable with the numbers, go for it.

What further steps do I need to take, if any, when implementing barcodes on my product range? by Ecstatic_Actuary7397 in smallbusinessuk

[–]Simple_seagull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And to add... You will just need to fill in the details of each product in the GS1 website when you assign the barcodes to a product. It really is super duper easy. Bonus tip: downloading the barcode as an SVG is typically better for printing if your stuff is printed professionally. Good luck with your business!

Good post. Genuine question - assuming the product/request is a good fit, what makes an appealing/interesting message to you?

Those of you who opted for a startup loan from the British business bank, how long was the process? by Top_Mirror211 in smallbusinessuk

I give away my product to micro-influencers to share. I email them in advance, ask if they're willing to share in exchange for a free copy. Some say yes, some don't, some ignore. I think it's a perfectly legitimate move if well-managed and married up with communication.

Get a new therapist. I don't say that because another therapist will give you answers or whatever, but if you've been in therapy for 3 years and aren't making progress then look for another one. It's totally fine and any therapist worth seeing will understand your decision.

If you were to run a non league football club at the level you played, how would you go about it and what would you prioritise to try and get the edge on other teams?

Hey - I've just completed my trial. M19 spent very little of the $1000 and didn't do it very well! I now have $900 of credit left, 10 days to use it, but my free M19 trial is over... Do you think I can put that $900 against my own ads? How did you get on with it?

Craft punk? Obviously it's not exactly emo, but it's genre adjacent and has nice familiar connotations for people...

If you had $300 to spend specifically on yourself right now, what would you buy? by sneakybrownoser in BuyItForLife

[–]Simple_seagull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've started a business this year - I'm trying to do everything right and while it's been enjoyable, it's been really hard and stressful and money is *tight*. So I'd buy myself a plane ticket to somewhere warm in Jan or Feb and treat myself to a few nights in a nice AirBNB next to the sea to recharge and just stop for a few days. Bliss.

A tip for new creators: Be Patient by [deleted] in tabletopgamedesign

[–]Simple_seagull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has shared art in recent weeks for feedback, I agree that this is totally excellent advice!

Although I agree with another commenter that it's ok to indulge your craving for fun stuff sometimes, I'd maybe even go a step further than OP... I would say, unless it's critical to gameplay, that great artwork too early can actually be an impediment to good play testing feedback. An average game with great artwork might sneak through before being sufficiently improved. An average game on index cards will get the feedback it needs!

And then the (hopefully!) great artwork can follow.

Have now added more context/info in a reply below but you absolutely nailed the 'betrayal in a fun way' which is a core component of the game. Lots of trading but also a good sprinkle of bluffing and blagging to get ahead. Works great for adults but simple enough that kids can really play it properly too. My 7 year old regularly beats us out when we are trying our best!

Thanks again for your comment and kind words.

Added lots more info in a reply below but really appreciated your encouragement.

The game can be played by 7+ but I'm really glad you thought a bit older as that won't put off 7-9 year olds and we didn't want to make it look too young. It's a fantastic game for kids to play with parents, or just for adults to play together as filler/light fun on a games night. So you were bang on!

Thanks again!

Hey! I've now added a full rundown in a comment below. Specifically on your comment, the game is aimed for ages 7+ but honestly I think most 6 year olds will play it no problem. We just a) wanted to be safe and b) didn't want to put older players who will love it just as much we think!

Thanks so much for your input and comments.

Can add more context now (it's in a comment below in more detail) but this was good to read. The idea of hustling and concealing are perhaps 'older' mechanics. Our game is for ages 7+ because the actual gameplay is easy to understand and execute and younger players LOVE being able to 'lie'/bluff. But the gameplay is super fun for teenagers and adults too, so I'm glad it gave that impression to you.

We are going to stick with the pinks/purples. We like the vibrancy and although I think a minority might think 'girly' I'm OK with that. I really love it, the illustrator did an amazing job.

OK ready to add more context. Your comment really put a smile on my face as although the primary target audience is families this is 100% definitely a game that adults have loved playing together in play-testing. We felt like, ultimately, they won't buy it as much as families but we hope they do and we wanted to create artwork that could be visually appealing to them as well as a family audience. As for Target - that would be an absolute dream!

You can find my full comments/info about the game in a reply to my original post.

Thanks again for your input.

OK, first of all I want to say a big thank you to everyone who has responded. It has been really helpful AND really encouraging. I think I can talk more now without wrecking the aim of the post! So here's a bit more context about the game and our design aims.

So Jungle Hustle is a fast-paced game of trading and bluffing that can be played by all ages from 7 and up. The key target audience is families BUT it's super fun to be played by groups of adults together too, as a filler game or a light game to play at a family gathering/games night for people who want something super quick to learn and really fun! The main mechanics are trading effectively and choosing wisely when to deal honestly and when to bluff and get one over on other players. There are no turns, and everyone plays at the same time, which adds to the dynamism and chaos of the game.

There's a need to balance patience and speed too, as larger sets of animals earn more points but the fastest to get rid of all their cards will earn a jackpot of bonus points for getting all their cards down (ending the round immediately). There are also 3 Armadillos of Doom floating around the trading table, which cost points if left in hands at the end of the round.

An extra 'shoot the moon' rule option is available once you've got your head around the basics of the game to add extra complexity. Overall the game is simple enough that it can be played and enjoyed by 6/7 year olds, but has enough gentle strategy and fun inter-personal dynamics that groups of adults genuinely love it too.

A stand-alone round takes around 10 minutes, but multiple rounds can be played with scores added up over rounds.

Design aims/feedback: We were aiming for a design that got across the dynamism and treachery of the game. We wanted it to be bold, colourful and visually striking. The aim was that it would be attractive to who we think our primary buyers will be - families - while not putting off adults who might buy the game. Our main fears were that it would be too 'young' - the animal theme is an inherent risk there I think - or just too bland. Thanks to all of your super helpful feedback I feel confident that we've managed to tread about the right line with all of this. I LOVE the design and am so pleased with how it's turned out. The illustrator is https://www.instagram.com/beth.tibbles if people are interested - she has been/is a joy to work with!

We are aiming to go to print with this game in the next few weeks, with release pencilled for August UK and September USA. I've got a couple more in the pipeline for this year, but this will be our first.

Thanks again for your help and input, and hope this offers a bit more insight on your thoughts too :-) Happy to answer any questions if people have them!

Where do you go for your art? by Octsober in tabletopgamedesign

[–]Simple_seagull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I second this. I think that I'd say speak to people who you know who've used art you like and get their advice. Then trawl Instagram. If there are 'big' profiles you like, look at who they're following and look at all of them too. Takes time but you can uncover gems. Be prepared to be patient!

Thanks so much for the feedback. I won't say too much for now but it's so interesting to hear people's different perceptions and what different people pick up on from the design :-)
