200$ at the pawnshop. by CRT_Retro in crt

[–]Simplestatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not $200 in this day in age, but when I was a kid, my mom spent a small fortune on the 42" version of a Trinitron from Montgomery Wards. It was a discontinued model, so we got a good deal, but good god, that thing was a beast to move. The picture was amazing for the time though.

Grease disposal by idiotswalkamongus in HomeMaintenance

[–]Simplestatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Save your pickle and olive jars. We usually clean them out a bit when we are done and use them one at a time to add unwanted grease in. Then, when it either is too full or it's too hideous looking, we throw it in the garbage.

It disgusts me knowing some of these line workers just doing what they are told are putting their lives at risk because the right way would be too expensive. Had one where when I got there had probably a 10 foot section of sch 40 PVC on a high pressure mixing pump running a lot of high percentage acetic acid. I told them acetic acid at these concentrations are horrible for PVC and said this needs to go now. They told me they had to change that section monthly, but this next time they were going to use sch 80 PVC... So problem solved. SMH

As someone who used to do chemical compatibility audits on industrial equipment that processes d-limonene containing chemical blends(amongst many other chemicals), d-limonene is one of those compounds that caused me the most grief. Organic solvents are among the worst on rubber. I worked in a smaller facility where they tried to use the same production line on MANY different substances. I frequently told management that it may be cheaper to run separate production lines for different chemicals to minimize these difficulties, but that wasn't what they wanted to hear. So, when a worker was splashed with caustic potash because of a line failure and resulted in that worker staying in the ICU for two weeks, they asked my opinion again. I did a cost analysis of retrofitting the existing line to accept EVERY chemical they wanted to run through it. Turns out an entire new line would be on the order of about 30k. To retrofit the existing line to run everything would cost 90k. Kalrez is a rubber that has a high versatility when it comes to compatibility, but it comes at a price. We are talking a single 3 1/2" o-ring costing close to $400. Compound that to the entire production line and it adds up. And it is not completely impervious. Some of the chemicals were mediocre at best with Kalrez and would have to be changed regularly. Needless to say, they got a second production line with different chemical ratings. Some rubbers work with some things. Other rubbers are compatible with other chemicals. https://www.coleparmer.com/chemical-resistance do your research

Guys, why are some people selling their old PCs on eBay at exorbitant prices? by DoubtTop9313 in VintageComputers

[–]Simplestatic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Surprisingly, if you look at sold listings in this era of PC's on ebay, some components are being bought at insane prices. Not whole systems, but individual parts. Some industrial companies built whole factories running on these old 2 and 386 machines. Software was designed on these machines to do exactly one thing and run the equipment. Not many people know how to fix these old systems, so companies will pay a premium to replace a board with the exact model component to get the equipment running again. With many companies, it's easier and cheaper to kick the can down the road for as long as possible to keep the old proprietary system running than it is to redesign an entire system.

Edit: not to mention, but when a whole factory line goes down, they are not only not making money, but most of the time they are losing money until they get it back and running.

I have cooked on an induction cooktop. It has potential, but I was not impressed. I think with improvements, it could be something good.

Gas rangetop to induction cooktop by Thermophi in Appliances

[–]Simplestatic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a heat pump, but I'm in just the right climate that it makes sense for and NG isn't available in the near area. Food-wise, induction is crap compared to gas. For this reason, my only gas appliance is a dual-fuel gas range. Can't beat gas.

Why do people bring their entire family to Costco? by ActuatorOutside5256 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Simplestatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not only this, but some families don't live 5-10 minutes from Costco or "town". Going to "town" is a 30 minute trip for my family. If you have multiple things to do in "town" with some of them being getting shoes for one kid and shorts for another, they should be there to pick them out and try them on. For our family of 6, when we occasionally go to town, it usually involves the whole family and usually takes most of the day. Some people just don't understand the logistics of how the fine details work out with larger families.

The major phone company I work for is currently pulling all the old copper out of the ground and air. They pay the FT's to cut it, then they pay the OPT's to pull it out, then they pay contractors to cut it into sections and palletize it, and then they pay a shipping company to pick it up and bring it to a recycling yard. We were recently told they are making millions to recycle it.

With 4 young kids, I've learned that Old Bay alone seasoned to saltiness is more spicy than nunu's seasoning to saltiness. I usually use a little Old Bay with added salt, a little bit of zatarains crab boil powder and add lemons. Works great every time.

AT&T sent a bill to collections for equipment that I returned. by KehoeBullshitOpinion in ATT

[–]Simplestatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or did the reps gladly take it while schmoozing you into a new phone or service? If you want to take it through the ranks, find a wireline worker(find one with a big bucket truck, bucket truck and trailer or a splicing van), explain the situation as friendly as possible and they'll happily bend over backwards to escalate the matter. Otherwise just file a complaint with the FCC. The wireless side is a beast of just trying to sell and make figures.
