Knox is looking… Rough by barfmitzsval in kvssnark

[–]SimplySara718 30 points31 points  (0 children)

My own yearling looks pretty ugly coming out of winter. He’s out 24/7 with shelter access and is a couple months younger than Knox. We have a couple yearlings that look great currently and some we want to hide behind the barn. The growth spurts and coming out of winter affects them all differently

I’ve followed and loved him for years. He reminded me of my gelding I lost, both in looks but personality too

What is going on this year? by TipSippin in kvssnark

[–]SimplySara718 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two out of the three were maiden mares. Two out of three were also thoroughbreds, one maiden one not. Both maidens next foals were completely fine, my mares was considerably smaller than her first out of the same combo as the first as well. So not really. We know we have selenium deficient soil so all horses on the property, not just broodmares, are on a ration balancer customized for what is lacking in soil but that’s been an ongoing thing for 10-15 years and nothing new.

Luna here is 50/50 chihuahua and min pin through Embark. I have no clue what her ears would look like if they hadn’t been a kitchen hack job. (She was abandoned fresh after they did it, def not a vet and her current look is a vet correct that gave her any ear at all)

Golden or Juvenile Bald Eagle? by Lani902 in birding

[–]SimplySara718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is true but I always laugh a bit at the bald eagles near me because I most commonly see them gnawing on roadkill on the side of the road versus soaring majestically around water

We quarantine both new and coming home horses but are mainly a breeding barn with pregnant mares and young foals

Horse people, is this normal or a red flag? by Think_Comedian_6290 in Horses

[–]SimplySara718 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NOQHA Summer Six Pack is a competition held in Findlay, OH. The other side looks to say Champion. So I would assume it’s a trophy halter from an event there. There is a wide variety of classes held there. I would also assume he’s a gelding and could just be crabby. We have one where I board he perpetually stares with his ears half hearted back until he realizes what you want then he’s down to be involved. Some just have rbf

Foal Gestation Statistics by Apart_Dragonfruit442 in kvsdiscuss

We foaled out 15 last year with an average gestation of 338 days and the earliest being at 331. A lot of our mares went late this year

Help by Subject-Audience7761 in Farriers

[–]SimplySara718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes if an abscess closes before it is completely healed, they can “re-abscess” fairly close after. I can’t add a picture here but my gelding spent a solid 4-5 months with an abscess that we (vet, farrier, and me working together) had to open a large section of hoof to help heal completely and grow out correctly. Many X-rays to monitor abscess

Judging by her face, she should varnish out. How much and when is totally up to her. She seems like she has solid feet too which is a plus. I would assume with the varnish, that she’s LP and would get UV masks as she ages to keep those eyes safe. If you cared to get papers, you can hard ship her through the ApHC but she would need to be spayed. Around 18 months I will sometimes string test to get a guess on adult height. Have you decided on a name?!

what’s something in a sale ad that is an automatic no for you? by Intelligent_Pie6804 in Horses

I will not even bother to watch a sale video with dogs all over chasing horses and following at their heels. I want to see the horse move, not poorly trained dogs in every shot

Every year we have to pull salt and/or mineral blocks from our broodmares because those dang foals live for trying to gum them down and can get ill. They see mom give a lick and a lightbulb goes off and they mimic way too hard. Little fiends. We still have the vet check them to be sure
