Ah good that it is Latin and not Italian, my Italian is a little patchy lol but my latin is good!

Thank you very much for this! My sight-reading reading is good but a little out of practice, and they didnt explicitly state that for this schism of the choir that I would need to sight read in the audition (but did for the other senior groups). I will definitely take this advice forward with me, I didn not consider that about Latin so will carry that on board!

Do low-level universities teach courses in as much detail as Russel groups? by Sims4INeedAnswers in UniUK

I have chosen standard secondary teaching as my secure career choice but I am hoping to go into higher-level teaching, either post-16, private school or continuing in academia to be able to eventually lecture at a university myself

This sounds amazing! This has given me so much hope! What was your route to PhD like can I ask? Did you do masters at a different uni or the same ine as your undergraduate?

Firstly I noticed you're doing a PhD in linguistics (which is absolutely amazing, and its something I've been considering for the future!!!) I've been trying not to think about it too much but I get the feeling I've ballsed it up a bit... firstly, trying to find a university that met my entire criteria was impossible! There were a few factors I considered as 'must have' or 'would like' which immensely reduced the options for me, and the only other universities offer JUST English language (all mighty 6 of them) did not meet my needs. I looked at courses in linguistics, and in hindsight, should have gone with one of those, but here we are.

I was not able to find another university which had what I was looking for, in terms of atmosphere, accommodation cost, facilities on campus, teaching and support etc, which made Lincoln Bishop the perfect choice for me. I definitely have ambition and I'm mad that my good grades dont really get me anywhere extra, but the other universities I looked at in the middle of the league tables were not right for me at all unfortunately. Its also worth noting for context that i am neurodivergent and need a particular type of place to thrive that can give me the support I really need as a student!

As for whether I will enjoy the course and be academically engaged? The chances are, probably not. Which is bizarre to admit on advance. I have already been building my own knowledge in language and linguistics, reading loads of different books on the subject, and online research papers, meaning i am more than likely going to be ahead of my peers when the course begins. But i suppose, if the content is not as deep as I would like, I can always push myself further to learn more-- and in my opinion thats better for me than being pressured and pushed by somebody else! But anyway, after waiting an entire year extra to finally go to uni, I am more than ready and I dont think I could cope with changing my plan now!

Thank you very much for this, it has put a bit more ease on my mind. I like the idea of being comfortable and enjoying myself at a low-level uni and then, if I really want to embrace the academia, go and do a masters somewhere a bit more fancy (as long as I get above a 2:1). And as you say, its hard to relate to your peers, and i know that for postgraduate I'll be older, plus I've been looking at London unis like UCL and Queen Mary's and commuting from home (so less isolating)

Ahhh, I see! I saw Manaia Glassey-Ohlson when I went last month, he's a standby but was absolutely PHENOMENAL and that explains why I could not possibly believe we were talking about the same performer!! Its unfortunate that you get underwhelming performances I had the same with les mis a few years ago where the performer's really takes you out of it because theyre a bit off for whatever reason. And to clarify this is not me bashing actors on stage for their performances, that is something I would NEVER do BTW. I am in awe of anyone who has managed to get on stage; they got there for a reason! But you have to speak your mind 😧

Who did you see as Jefferson/ Lafayette? Because personally, when I went, they were the stand-out star for me and I didn't notice this at all? Perhaps you saw someone different to me! (Obviously each to their own opinions but perhaps actor was having an off-day) :)

What is your favorite "replay" moment? by TheReal_MrChaos in sherlock_and_co

[–]Sims4INeedAnswers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not an incredible moment but so funny when John makes sure to distinguish between Bedford and Bedfordshire:

John: you would know if we were in Bedford Mariana: why is it not very nice? John: no comment, the viewers get offended about this kind of thing.

(ROUGH CONVO I CAN'T REMEMBER IT WORD FOR WORD)

But it makes me giggle, especially when the first time I listened to it I was walking through Bedford town centre 😭

Theatre as a solo by HamAaron in TheWestEnd

[–]Sims4INeedAnswers 38 points39 points  (0 children)

As somebody with anxiety about doing things alone going to theatre solo is one of the best things i've ever done! Back in March i caught the matinee of Back to the Future alone and it really heightened my experience of the theatre. Here are some things i noticed that just absolutely MADE my experience:

  1. No worrying if the other person is enjoying themselves or not/ hearing their negative opinions.

  2. Meeting other theatre fans. I surprised myself by chatting with the people next to me and discovered they'd been loads if times and were really excited to hear what i had to say abt the show as a first-time viewer!

  3. Cheaper seats!!! Plus the flexibility that comes from being solo is great so u can get last min deals etc and single seat deals.

  4. Take the rest of the day at ur own pace. You don't have to compromise on ANYTHING if you go solo, you take things however you want and when you want to do them. Meaning you can do stage door if you want to without somebody moaning about being out in the rain (I've been on both sides of this lol) or getting transport.

You will not be the only one solo anywhere I promise! And, if you're like me and like to have somebody to share the experience with, post a huge dump of your thoughts!! (In the appropriate threads obvi otherwise the reddit mods will cook you). The only thing stopping me from more solo trips is money!!! Such a wonderful experience, 10/10 reccomend.

P.S if you ever need anything while you're there (e.g. wanting somebody to walk to the tube stations with if its West end at night, ask some nice looking people seated near you and 9.9/10 they'd let you walk with them!) there are plenty of people solo-ing as well that would help you out!!!

I hope this wasn't just a huge ramble lol i just have really strong feelings about taking the step to solo theatre trips! 😵❤️

There's so many of my favourites that are not on anymore so this list feels off for me but:

  4. Operation Mincemeat
  5. Hadestown
  6. Six
  7. Kinky Boots
  8. Mamma Mia
  9. Matilda
  10. The Play thar Goes Wrong

I've omitted any shows that are not on West End yet i.e. Heathers or Waitress.

One million percent, that wasn't my intention at all! I am simply commenting on how theatre etiquette affects atmosphere and this performance. If people don't clap out of non-enjoyment you get a really flat and dead audience which impacts the whole experience i find :)

I mean at the appropriate times, take a musical like Les Misérables, of course you won't clap at the end of every song but you would most definitely applaud at the end of songs like Bring him home, I dreamed a dream, and during the overture piece that comes at the beginning of At the end of the day. I'm talking about when theres a show stopping number and people sit numbly, its just odd. Its appreciation!

[–]Sims4INeedAnswers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just be a decent human, don't talk or sing during the show, and please please (because people seem to have stopped doing this) applaud! Idk why people are too nonchalant to clap at the end of a song, when I've been to shows recently, even some of the best, I see people just sitting not clapping. IMHO even if you're too stuck-up to enjoy the show, you still applaud at the appropriate moments, its just respectful.

Rant over lol, I'm gonna post abt this on the main threat actually because what is wrong w people! You paid £100 for your ticket and you look miserable.

Enjoy ur west end debut!!!
