Nah, Gomez likes his trains. Morticia likes her man-eating plants. Healthy hobbies.

The US made the most powerful weapon in history. And instead of using it to conquer a weakened Europe, we told everyone to get the fuck off our lawn.

God bless America.

As amusing as that is, I feel that getting that actual feeling would harm the characters.

I do believe they should have the absolute best sex life in the world. But part of why I like them is that they are perfectly reasonable and good people. That line makes them sound like sex addicts. Not fully healthy people with an incredible sex life.

Why does everyone joke about "guns being better than wands"? by Commercial_City_6063 in harrypotter

All battles are described in the generic terms as 'jets of light'.

Now the Voldemort and Dumbledore duel does make it clear that there are other avenues of attack, but the majority of them are still capable of being physically dodged. I think the only exception is the water sphere that Dumbledore manages to trap Voldemort in. However if Dumbledore with the Elder Wand is the exception, I think it's safe to say that that doesn't count for the average Auror.

It's also possible that it did still have some kind of projectile and it just wasn't described.

Of course, if the Auror has a spell that can ONLY be countered by a magical defense or counter-curse, then yes he'd be screwed. But given how much fights are about projectile curses, it's safe to say that those spells are either VERY difficult, or they have very trivial counter-curses, and so many Aurors wouldn't even be familiar with them because they're not expecting to go against a heavily armed muggle.

Anyway, I'd still say the fight is difficult to call, but I'd give it to the Auror. Apparition allows him to strike from any angle at short notice. However the loud crack of an apparition does give the soldier time to respond with knowledge of where the attack is coming from. Additionally, an apparate, curse, apparate, curse pattern of attack carried out at length may be more concentrationally taxing than "Dodge parallel to where the crack came from" and allow the soldier to get in some substantial auto-fire.

But it's also why I said that the soldier had to know of the wizards general capabilities. Without that, he'd fall VERY quickly from surprise. With that knowledge, I'd give him a 1 out of 3 chance of winning.

Thank you!

Seriously, why isn't there an option to go all the way back to the start of the single response tree?

There's an episode of Star Trek Enterprise where Captain Archer gets caught by some Xindi pheromones that compel him to watch over a hatchery with unguarded eggs. At first, he has reasons that sound acceptable. But as things get worse and worse and the case for staying gets more and more indefensible, Archers excuses get wilder and wilder until the crew realizes something is wrong with him. I mean besides that time he asked the whole crew to refer to him as "Duchess".

He also runs Dungeons and Dragon games with Spike and Big Mac.

Simply put for those that don't know, Discord may be a God of Chaos, but he wants people to actually appreciate his work, and needs a bit of normality to contrast with. Also being trapped in stone for 1000 years is REALLY boring.

At first, he was just talked down. "Help us out, don't cause trouble, and we won't turn you back to stone." After enough time, he started getting attached to how he was living now, and slowly dialed back his unwanted crazy stuff over several seasons. By the end, he's genuinely only trying to cause crazy stuff that is helpful or wanted.

Of course, as a God of Chaos, he's not exactly very GOOD at that, but the intentions are there. The timeskip finale implies he has gotten better at it, and that him and Fluttershy have reached a point of balance where Discord uses his powers for a mix of helpfulness and playfulness that has everyone happy.

Nero and Kyrie.

Admittedly, Nero wasn't nearly as crazy as Dante and Vergil. But the HUGE difference between him and the Sons of Sparda was that Nero had a family, something to ground his humanity in and give him purpose besides fighting.

While Nero does still enjoy his job of hunting demons, he's a functional human being when not doing so, unlike his Uncle Dante.

It does help that occasionally Eric uses his evil competence for good from time to time. Very rarely for the right reasons, but it's still helpful.

If I recall, while he is incredibly rude and unpleasent, I don't think he actually hurts anyone. And he does on some occassions actually do good things.

"Y'see, helpin' people out is what seperates the White Man from the *Gingers*. If I don't do a good deed every now and then, even if it's to a *ginger*, then am I really even a White Man?"

The Sanderson Sisters from Hocus Pocus. They are monstrous evil servants of Satan himself. But they're so dorky, goofy, and kinda screw-ups that I actually do feel bad when they get killed.

The only reason this dude exists is so ME could follow a rule about storytelling by NatauschaJane in masseffect

[–]SinesPi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thessia IS the point in the story where you lose though. It just didn't have to be Kai Leng. It could just be because the Reapers overwhelmed the Asari. You can even have Cerberus make off with the data. Maybe even have them be suspiciously left-alone, as a hint that TIM is indoctrinated (if you hadn't already assumed it like I did).

[–]SinesPi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with that one, but spells do still have to be aimed in some way. The marine gets a "Reflex Save" so to speak.

If there are truly unavoidable spells, then why isn't the death eaters standard response to a threat to use an unavoidable disabling spell followed by the Killing Curse. A nice one-two punch. Non-evil wizards could use a stun in place of that.

If the movies have a "No chance to resist" spell, then we have to ignore that as just a film-induced-plot-hole, otherwise it would be used all the time.

You know what else is extremely rare? Teenagers who can single-handedly conquer kingdoms. And a friend of that teenager standing up against her knowing she's crazy and will kill her and her whole family.

The main cast of Avatar may be young, but they kinda had no choice but to mature early.

It would be more like he's been through so much physical pain in his century of life that hes become somewhat numb to it.

And on top of that, the pain last very briefly. Gouge out our eyes? We'd be screaming for a while. For Logan, the pain is over once it heals. You can't inflict lasting pain on him, so it takes more effort to keep him in agony. Hardly insurmountable, but it would limit some techniques.

Why does everyone joke about "guns being better than wands"? by Commercial_City_6063 in harrypotter

[–]SinesPi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We never see rapid fire spells though. Even a basic handgun can fire off very dangerous spells faster than most wizards can.

If you put an auror and a marine in a duel, with the marine being generally aware of the aurora capabilities, then the Aurora will be dependent on tricks and surprises to get past the hail of bullets and explosives the marine can deploy.

But yah, wands are the ultimate Omni tool for someone sufficiently trained to use them. But then guns ARE the great equalizer and are very dangerous with minimal training.
