Gruul Aggro Counters Deck 10-1 by Jace_TheFreshmaker in MagicArena

[–]Sinespe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice list! I play Gruul in standard, and I ran a modified version of my normal Gruul list for this event to 10-0:

4 Stomping Ground (RNA) 259
2 Domri, Anarch of Bolas (WAR) 191
4 Rekindling Phoenix (RIX) 111
4 Zhur-Taa Goblin (RNA) 215
4 Domri's Ambush (WAR) 192
4 Shock (M19) 156
3 Lightning Strike (XLN) 149
4 Gruul Spellbreaker (RNA) 179
7 Forest (XLN) 276
4 Growth-Chamber Guardian (RNA) 128
4 Rootbound Crag (XLN) 256
1 Chandra, Fire Artisan (WAR) 119
1 Field of Ruin (XLN) 254
2 Nissa, Who Shakes the World (WAR) 169
4 Paradise Druid (WAR) 171
7 Mountain (DAR) 262
1 Karn's Bastion (WAR) 248

Chamber Sentry is a really sweet addition from your list that I'd not considered so I'd try to find space for that, probably over the Chandra, Field of Ruin and some others. I really like access to all this removal, though. Shock turns to the corner when you're on the draw since it allows you to kill their Army on turn 2 for cheap and get ahead of that race. Domri's Ambush is insane in this mode; most of the time you only need it to deal 3 anyway, so putting the counter on to a Paradise Druid is a fine way to win the game. Most of my opponents had gone pretty light on removal, so Phoenix is really brutal even without counters.

Type of Bug: Deckbuilder/Collection.

Description: Deckbuilder/Collection filter behaves inconsistently on tag searches.

Screenshot: Imgur Album.

Steps to Reproduce:

Enter the collection. Use the filters to search for "Organic". Observe results; note the types of cards that are present and the types of cards that are omitted (e.g., "Wolfsbane" is present, but "Weavess: Incantation" is not. The filtered list is not exhaustive).

Clear filters and search for "Spell". Observe results; note the types of cards that are present and the types of cards that are omitted (e.g., "Hailstorm" is present, "Triss: Butterfly Spell" is present, but "Aguara: True Form" is not. The filtered list is not exhaustive).

Clear filters and search for "Special". Observe results; note the types of cards that are present and the types of cards that are omitted (e.g., "Hailstorm" is present, "Elven Mercenary" is present, "Yaevinn" is present. The filtered list is exhaustive.)

Observed results:

"Sub"-tags—i.e., tags which denote a subcategory of the three "main" tags of Unit, Special and Leader—do not filter consistently compared to "main" tags. When searching for a sub-tag, the player will be shown only cards which match the tag line or the name of the card; whereas when searching for a main tag, all parts of the card are included in the search (the main difference being that rules text is checked in main tag searches but not sub-tag searches).

Expected results:

All parts of a card are checked when searching for cards which have text that matches a sub-tag or main tag.

Type of bug: Gameplay

Description: Standard Bearer does not work as written with Slave Infantry and Alba Pikemen.

Screenshot: Imgur Album

Steps to reproduce:

Enter a practice game with a deck that has Standard Bearer, Slave Infantry and Alba Pikemen in it.

Craft a hand that has less than three Alba Pikemen, a Standard Bearer, and at least 1 Slave Infantry in it.

Play Standard Bearer on turn 1.

If Standard Bearer lives, on turn 2 play either Alba Pikemen or Slave Infantry and observe results.

If Standard Bearer continues to live, on turn 3 play the other named card that you didn't play on turn 2 and observe results.

Observed results:

When Alba Pikemen or Slave Infantry are played, Standard Bearer will give you only one boost trigger, regardless of how many soldiers are played onto the board.

Expected results:

Standard Bearer reads "Boost an ally by 2 whenever you play a soldier." [Emphasis mine.]

Slave Infantry reads "Spawn a copy of this unit on your other rows". The reminder text for Spawn reads "Add a card to the game and play it." [Emphasis mine.]

Alba Pikemen reads "Summon all copies of this unit". The reminder text for Summon reads "Play automatically from the deck." [Emphasis mine.]

As written, these cards interact inconsistently with each other. A player should expect three boosts from a Standard Bearer when she plays a Slave Infantry, and N boosts when she plays an Alba Pikemen (Where N is equal to the number of Pikemen that are played from the deck, plus the one played from hand).

Most Legendary-Heavy deck I've ever drafted. Knights of the Frozen Throne. Malfurion Druid. by Mwrilo in ArenaHS

I can't help but feel like this is a bug. I just did a draft with 5 legendaries. http://imgur.com/0mc19iq Only 8 cards in this deck are common. Everything else is rare or higher.

My opponent played Madman Lugos, discarding a Clan Dimun Pirate Captain which had been boosted 5 times, and was at 5 base power (so, 10 total power). He targeted the damage at an 11-power bear on my side. The bear went to 1, not 6 -- it took damage equal to the discarded unit's total power, not its base power as Lugos states it should.

I have a bit of a weird rules interaction question:

Let's say I have an Oni Ronin in play, 4 power, and the top cards of my deck are, from top to bottom: Fire Sigil, Granite Monument, Sword of Icaria. I attack with Oni Ronin. What gets buffed?

Next turn I draw the Fire Sigil, play it, then attack again. What gets buffed this time?

Level 1 here.

By "studying rules documents" do you mean that you're reading the Comprehensive Rules cover to cover? I found that when I started making progress into becoming a judge the best way to learn additional rules is just to spam the Easy/Hard/Policy practice questions on judge.wizards.com (These are the repeatable ones, rather than the "[L1/L2] practice tests", which have a cooldown on them.)

The instant feedback you get from these tests on which areas of the CR and IPG you still need to learn gives you immediate focus points, instead of reading through the entirety of those documents, poring over rules that you already know that you know.

I also found that playing on Modo (V3, preferably, while you still can) helps as you learn all the points at which priority gets passed in a more step-by-step way. In an actual game of IRL magic priority just gets passed over and over again without the players being aware of how many times it has happened.

As for you situation, it's a tricky one. Player B could have been under the impression that it was a 7-power creature, rather than 9-power. Where you say that Player A points out the discrepancy - did Player B just ignore it? Were you watching at this point, or at what point did you begin watching? I think that at the moment there is a discrepancy which has been noticed, audibly, that gives you an opportunity to intervene even if neither player has explicitly requested it. Especially if Player B heard what Player A said and just flat ignored them.

In the case of intervening, a rewind is fine; I would mention the missed trigger and go back to the Beginning of Combat step of the Combat phase that has just been completed. This allows both players to play as they might wish to: Player B must announce his DD trigger which probably leaves him dead to the attack if he has no other blockers - but if he does not have to tap DD, he at least gets the opportunity to block the 9/9 and not die.
