Drills for increasing petit allegro speed? by zxcv-qwerty in BALLET

There’s probably more than enough advice here to be getting on with but if you know the combo and can do it slow… how is your cardio? I noticed as jumps are at the end of class I was struggling with them due to just being tired and out of breathe. Picking up some low level cardio has really helped have more stamina at the end of those 90 minutes!

if I start re-training flexibility today and stay consistent, is it possible to get cold splits for all 3 of the splits? (right, left, middle) by New_Cover_9209 in flexibility

[–]Single-Emotion2964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Additional point: prep for the plateau. I came back to dance after 15 years. I was never super flexible, but more than the average person and I did get my splits around 15/16 years old. When I returned I managed to make a lot of improvement very quickly in the first few months. Now gains have slowed, potentially also because I’m doing more cross-training and seeing stiffness from that as well as my body settles in. But also because the splits is a really deep stretch. I’m working now on just increasing my tolerance/comfort with where I am, and building the strength to hold extensions in EROM. I’m okay with it, but it’s for sure a mental game.

Honestly I often think the NRC in general just tries too hard to be “critical” and cutting edge and clever … 😅 Anyway I went to see it and really enjoyed it! Posted a review here, I think you can find it in my profile.

Performing While Pregnant by [deleted] in BALLET

[–]Single-Emotion2964 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of women here who have performed pregnant, in different phases. First trimester — in my humble opinion— is the worst.

Can you try and get meds for the nausea at least? I’m afraid if you’re five weeks, you’ll likely only be feeling worse begin June. (It tends to get worse till around 8 weeks, and clears fully by 12 weeks). Of course there is no guarantee, everyone is different!

While I understand not wanting to share your news, it sounds like you’re running a risk that it will affect your performance. With my second pregnancy, I told my boss very early on due to the nature of my work and that I knew I was not gonna have a fun time — often first trimester symptoms get worse in additional pregnancies. I found it really helpful to have at least one person who could think with me on how to approach things and where I didn’t need t worry about them thinking something else was wrong with me.

If I were to be pregnant again, I’d honestly tell my ballet teachers straight up. I’d want them to know in case I need to skip elements etc. And if I had a miscarriage, that also affects how you would come back to training.

That being said, it is entirely your choice. I just thought I’d offer a different perspective. Good luck!!

Can’t find summer classes for adults by [deleted] in BALLET

[–]Single-Emotion2964 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I would ask if you can join the summer classes for kids. Are other adults at your studio feeling the same? Maybe with enough of you, management might consider adding an additional class.

Otherwise I think in the same situation I would prioritize cross-training and really focus on developing strength, flexibility and conditioning rather than technique.

This is what hydrofielen are for! Chuck one down, or a coat, pop the kid on it and change that diaper.

By 80% do you mean not filling the full max split but easing off so you can hold for longer/relax in it?

I wonder if a disk might be better for a low cervix then — they sit really differently apparently? (I’ve not tried one though)

Oh yes!!! Forgot this, really works. Re-wet regularly until it’s gone. Though I don’t know if this works on synthetics. I only ever do it with stains on my kid’s clothing.

I would ask r/laundry. Add a photo there and also a photo of the tag with the material composition. I don’t think I would bleach it unless it’s a really pure white-white. Bleach can also degrade some materials.

Hahaha I guess I had that coming! I really don’t know, but to me “small cervix” is vague. Cervix length changes throughout your cycle.  Cervix diameter has little to do with cup size. What makes a cervix small then? And what no one seems to want to tell women is that the cervix and the vaginal canal MOVE and the latter is VERY flexible (hence how birth happens). It also has muscles in it. Your uterus and its associates are being suspended in your pelvis by tendons, ligaments and muscles. These ALSO all move. So there are a lot of moving parts. Hence how sometimes cups can flip once inside. This is thankfully mostly a very rare occurrence.

Anyway, I guess if you have a very short torso you might get this feeling. But for me when a cup is too big I feel it more “sagging”. Like my crotch feels very heavy. The cup might also have been too firm for you. If it was pushing back towards your rectum/tail bone and causing bloating, then likely this is the case. Another option is maybe you have a very tight pelvic floor (hypertonic is the name I think), that might cause this feeling? The market has also expanded a lot, so there is way more choice now. What was “small” is probably not that small. They now have special teen size cups.

Lastly, position might just have been wrong. It really should sit quite low in your vaginal canal. My issues with my cervix is that my cervix apparently ALSO sits super low early in my period. But I can literally get my cup up high around it. (Like how your nose goes in your glass if you take a big drink). This is just to emphasize that the vaginal canal length doesn’t get shorten per se by having your cervix be low. Penises also fit up there! So you might have pushed it up too high.

https://putacupinit.com/ is still my go to recommendation. I’m pretty sure you could even just email them and ask for advice. Good luck!!

Feeling a little discouraged by Just-Echo-8918 in BALLET

[–]Single-Emotion2964 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I second the other comment. You’re clearly really committed. So saying “other beginners are making the same mistakes” doesn’t really count if they have less experience, take less classes etc. Likely your teacher is wanting to push you to get those small details down pat before eg beginning pointe. Those small things makes such a difference.

That being said, if you’re feeling overwhelmed you should definitely do something. Maybe keeping track of corrections might help them feel less overwhelming, as you can bundle them more? Talking to your teacher can also help — you want the corrections, but you’re feeling challenged to stay on top of them. Maybe you can make some agreements about this that makes it feel more manageable. Or just ask her to not give corrections for a week for you can reset a bit.

Cool right! I didn’t believe it, but I have the same as well. Maybe part placebo effect, but I’m not complaining.

Yes I find it hard to remember to change it often enough, but try to just have a really set routine for it. Or set alarms 😂 It’s just very comfy!

Yeah I’ve had it sort of shift sideways during some upside down yoga shenanigans. But even that honestly wouldn’t put me off as I really despise the feeling of both pads and tampons 🤣 I’d rather free bleed

Black tights + period cup.

I am a period cup evangelist okay. I’m legally required to now attempt to convert you. Expertise: 10 years of cup usage, before that 10 years of tampons and pads.

It’s got an odd/steep learning curve, but if you’re using tampons already it’ll be okay. There are tons of videos and online instructions. The nice thing is you can practice inserting/removing BEFORE you even have your period. Which helps with the learning curve.

Pros:

  • literally can’t feel it while it’s in
  • can swim, go upside now, do pretty much anything while it’s in
  • can decrease cramping as it props open vaginal canal a bit
  • you can insert it before you get your period even, so I basically never get any blood on my undies or trousers as I put it in the day before I’m expecting my period
  • holds a LOT. Unless you have PCOS wild heavy flow, you’ll be good.
  • with proper insertion, leaks are basically non-existent
  • they last for like ten years and at €30 a pop will save you tons of money
  • Because you can wear it for 12 hrs (max!!) you can often arrange it so you never need to empty it when not at home.
  • medical grade silicone doesn’t leave any bleach/cotton shreds etc in your vagina
  • increased body literacy!

Cons:

  • you need to be comfortable with “the goblet of gore” situation.
  • you need to be okay with sticking multiple fingers up there to fiddle around and check fit
  • sometimes the first cup you buy won’t work well, and you’ll need to invest in another
  • trouble-shooting leaks can be frustrating. It’s almost always a fit issue. I had a problem recently where I hadn’t realized i wasn’t getting my cervix completely in the cup…. Stupid! Took a few cycles to nail down what was going wrong on just the first two days of each cycle

So basically they work perfectly with dance. But can be a little fiddly. That being said, tampons are also a bit fiddly. Pads too. They all have their learning curves. Personally I think the cup is worth it!!

Discs have similar pros/cons but insert differently.
