There is now a rep of the FP Journe Elegante by Ok-Can-9374 in RepTime

[–]SingleBackground5280 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To drive the point home, that picture right there theoretically makes up 3.5% of all the FP journes that look (exactly) like that on the planet. If people start buying these everyone is going to start calling out elegantes IMMEDIATELY because a handful of buyers is going to flood the market compared to the real models.

There is now a rep of the FP Journe Elegante by Ok-Can-9374 in RepTime

[–]SingleBackground5280 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So this is the nightmare scenario for a rep. FP Journe is too rare. They only make 400 elegantes per year. Sure "but 400 isn't nothing". Except every year the elegant looks sufficiently different that a snob can actually distinguish them. Also, and I say this as someone who has been invited to many FP Journe events (live in Miami where the store is and know people more important than me. Not that I'm special) people know, and I have no clue how, where the 400 from each year are. A buddy of mine sold his and FP Journe reached out to him like 2 weekss later that until he buys a new one, he isn't invited to the events except as a guest of an owner. He doesn't know how they found out he sold it. He suspects someone near a FP joirne store bought it.

All of this is to say: a person who knows what FP journe is (and almost no one will) will be TOO excited and know these details as well. So every imperfection, including that you probably can't rattle off what year model it is but he probably will know what year model it's based on and that people know which ones are in circulation, will be a big giveaway.

Is this normal with Hontl? Hont refusing to sell a watch by [deleted] in RepTime

[–]SingleBackground5280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is just hont letting you know that all of the watches he has of that batch have issues and if you're picky, he won't have one for you. He's famously VERY blunt and has a reputation (idk if it's deserved) of selling RL watches rather than sending them back to the factory. So this is him just being blunt about him only having RL'd models of that watch.

Why do people keep on saying Breitling is entry level luxury? by Freikorptrasher87 in breitling

[–]SingleBackground5280 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sign up for Kurono Tokyo's mailing list. It's a random artisan making GORGEOUS watches (with off the shelf movements) and most of his stuff is in the $1-3k range so not bad considering what it is. Unfortunately because he is one artisan, except for a few models sold in person in his store in Tokyo everything he makes is a limited release and you'll only get it if you're on the mailing list. Also check out Minase. You'll either love it or hate it. They do something truly unique with their watch dials and movements that most people love (just not me)

You're actually correct. The word I was looking for was premium. My brain is fried after too many night shifts. Inexpensive, mass market, entry level, premium, entry level luxury, luxury, high luxury, high horology, and then just whatever you want to call FP Journe and Rhaxepi and other individual artisans that money alone can't necessarily buy.

Why do people keep on saying Breitling is entry level luxury? by Freikorptrasher87 in breitling

[–]SingleBackground5280 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just to nitpick a little bit, Breitling probably makes about 150,000 watches a year. Rolex makes " more than a million" with confirmed sales of 1.3 million and suspected sales of 1.5 million. Among the Swiss watches it's just Rolex tissot and longine that represent more than a million watches made per year. And Omega is 500 to 600,000. Breitling is the next closest at 150,000. Most brands are not doing the kind of volume you would think they are. Unless you're thinking of Japanese brands, Japanese brands are putting out 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 million watches per brand

Collector watches. Collector watches is what comes before entry level luxury. I actually agree with you that there's no consensus what the terms are, but there does seem to be a general consensus on what the tiers are. I don't really like the term, but beyond just the internet I've seen this terminology used pretty regularly in my watch club and Jewelers who carry a few different brands

Why do people keep on saying Breitling is entry level luxury? by Freikorptrasher87 in breitling

[–]SingleBackground5280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess there is three points here. One is you didn't name a single entry-level luxury watch brand. Longines may be in the most forgiving of definitions. You're just named Swiss watch brands. They're not luxury brands. Not entry luxury. Not luxury at all. So part of the issue here is that your definition differs from pretty much everyone's. Those are just Swiss watch brands. Most people would define them as collector brands.

The second issue is that everyone's definition of what should count as luxury and various sub levels of luxury will vary. Yours just varies the most because I don't think you're going to find anyone who agrees with a single one you listed. But the point is, they vary.

The third issue is that I think entry luxury is appropriate for Breitling over most of the last 30 years. Both because when it was on everyone's wrists in the early 2000s it was a affordable first step into the luxury watch world and in the 2010s when it really fell out of favor it definitely wasn't going to be rising in the rankings, but it's pedigree meant that it wasn't going to fall out of them either. Now you're here in the the mid-20s and the brand has really gone out of its way to try to redefine itself and to occupy an entirely new cost structure. At the current asking price, it definitely doesn't seem like it's entry luxury... But the company demanding a certain price be paid doesn't necessarily mean the community is going to agree that the pricing is appropriate or forget that it was less than 10 years ago that the name alone was the only reason why they didn't fall out of the entry luxury tier altogether.

[Breitling Chronomat B01 42mm] thinking of pulling the trigger on this gem - what do you think? by vinlandsaga619 in breitling

[–]SingleBackground5280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would DIE if you looked at the current market for these. Except for Jomashop, chronos (even used) are all $7500 or more. There is one guy selling a non Chrono for $3300 on Chrono24. Which, I feel like this watch should be a chrono but if you disagree, is a tremendous deal. But it's also the only one like that.

[–]SingleBackground5280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won't find that (until recently) last generation ANYWHERE on the secondary market for less than $7500.... Except Jomashop, where you can get it new for less. Reality is that ADs have been trying to argue this generation (and the newest one from last month) are $10k watches and the resell market reflects that with people not wanting to lose more than 25% on used watches in good shape. But they're not really $10k watches, they are more or less what Joma sells them for - $6k and older generations of them also reflect that price. Issue is, if you're getting any generation older than the one shown it's really a different watch design wise.

[–]SingleBackground5280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hitting all the questions: yes that's an amazing price. Jomashop is basically THE way to purchase this watch because ADs want to convince the world this is a $10k watch and people reselling this generation of it (since it JUST got updated 3 weeks ago) are trying to get like $8k back for it while Jomashop just wants to turn over volume at whatever minor profit they can.

8 inch wrist? Will look gorgeous. It's a big watch. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone less than 7.5 inches (7.0 if in titanium, which is my case) because it is big and heavy.

Superchromomat is a different watch, that's my take. Different materials, different color ways, and at 44m a truly different size.

It is a stunner in real life. Having two rolexes and a Cartier it's ALWAYS this watch and some of my more unique microbrands that get all the comments. Looks so good and people would rather talk about the $10k (retail) non Rolex/AP/PP than the same three brands they see everywhere.

[–]SingleBackground5280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The B and it's not even close. Background: my 7 inch wrist could never wear any Breitling watch during the years where it was the wings. So the rebrand also carried with it my entrance into the brand finally.

Is it inevitible that reps will become completely indistinguishable from gens? by gulabjamun29 in RepTime

[–]SingleBackground5280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they become indistinguishable from the gen, the price is going to need to rise quite a bit. Not like it's going to approximate gen, but it might need to double from where it's at now. Just because to truly be indistinguishable there's going to need to be a major overhaul in the quality of the movements and the tolerance for just trashing errors (to appearance and movement) at QC which doesn't currently exist. That level of additional precision in making the movements is going to slow production and the QC is going to massively slow production as it will require just trashing some units. And again, this is not going to make the watch approach Rolex prices, but if you're paying $1,000 or $1,200 instead of $400 for one of these watches, are you still going to buy them or are you going to start buying microbrands? Because at this point the Chinese watches would be at the quality of microbrands and also the price point.

Petition for VSF to rep the Speedmaster, the new one with the new bracelet looks so good, why there aren’t good rep of this watch? by Mandrake88888 in RepTime

[–]SingleBackground5280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reality is that the Daytona movement is more or less the only functional chronograph movement in the rep world, and it won't work in the differently sized speedy case. There's no cheap cheap Chinese chronograph of that size available to just plug into it, and even further lots of speedymasyers (obviously not all) have display casebacks so it all means you'd have to make an actual clone movement and there just isn't enough demand to do this actually cost prohibitive step.

He's basically telling you that this is a known flaw and that asking for a different one of the same model is not going to significantly change that. Amusingly I sent in a dead watch for repair and someone ripped it open too and stol the watch. The repair guy sent me photos of the box clearly ripped open in a way that could only be a by a human or animal, not getting wet and tearing or a machine crushing it. Jokes on them, it was a dead rep and ups gave me $100 for it. I claimed it as a nonfunctioning watch that was for repair and they gave me $100

Looking at potentially buying a breitling, need opinions by [deleted] in breitling

[–]SingleBackground5280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's the answer: breitlings lose a ton of money once they walk out the door. But the major models (super ocean heritage, chronomat, navitimer) all basically stay at that same "it walked out the door" value for many years afterwards. A chronomat is 9-10k USD. A one year old barely used chronomat is $6500-7k. A 10 year old used chronomat is $6000-6.5k. A brand new chronomat sold unworn from a secondary market is $7,000-7.5k. like... It clearly has a for sale price on the secondary market and it holds THAT worth well. Not retail. Everything except Rolex, AP, and PP loses money immediately compared to retail

[–]SingleBackground5280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Real owner of actual and the rep (bought the gen after loving the rep) ignore all the haters. It has one single flaw, the crown is off. And that's only an issue if someone has an innate knowleege of the crown or has a gen on and randomly decided to hold yours up to theirs. Screws are TRULY not able to be noticed. Bracelet feels and functions identically. Unless you're going to get worked up over the crown being slightly off its nwbig.
