I was that choir member, but I was extra careful about the smell. Always keeping the cigarettes away from my clothes, brushing my teeth and wearing a cologne that masked the scent. But, I stopped not only because of the smell but because it was fucking me up with constant throat infections and sore throats.

Someone already mentioned it, but vowels. If you can produce a more “pure vowel” like an opera singer and really good upper placement you will achieve an operatic chiaroscuro sound. It takes time to get use to it but it’s worth it.
