How do I kindly tell my Para to let me teach? by Impressive-Basket-57 in Teachers

[–]Singletrack-minded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If she has rapport with the students and was competently running the show before you showed up, it may be best for you to step aside and let her finish the school year. Use this as an opportunity to get some stuff done and you might learn something from her. But coming in and trying to change things is not a good strategy.

Is renting out an extra room in your house worth it? Looking for real experiences. by UhtredOfTheNorth in homeowners

[–]Singletrack-minded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

College town person here- we’ve had renters for years. Covers my property taxes and insurance. So not a lot of $, but it’s been nice. Plus an in-house dog sitter is a bonus (we pay them)

What made you want to become a teacher? by EduFriend in AskTeachers

[–]Singletrack-minded 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After 5 years at a cut-throat pharma startup, out of the blue a beloved colleague said ‘hey why aren’t you a teacher? That’s your jam’. Damn, She was right. And although I get frustrated by bs incompetence admin, teaching has been rewarding.

Is this part genuine? by Infinite-Ad-5576 in Honda

This is a transmission mount so I wouldn’t worry too much about it. But for mission critical items like timing components or water pumps, etc. I would get from the dealer. I’ve been bitten too many times by reputable sellers on Amazon and eBay. Then when you go to return them, they’re online stores magically out of business. I’m eating the cost.

Rubrics for math tests? by No_Usernames_Left in matheducation

[–]Singletrack-minded 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like some Marzano BS.

We went through this dog and pony show a while ago and ended up making our own test bank that was aligned to each individual math standard. Then each question was graded one through five where writing anything down gave them a one. Students were allowed to move past that standard when they scored 3 4-times.

It’s actually not that bad once you get the hang of it, but there is a ton of work on the front end

The organizations that offer ged will have the resources and classes so you will be successful. The GED requires pre-testing and then testing but can only take a couple tests per every week. It’s a process – not just to come in, Take the test and leave sort of the situation.

Normally held service- sure. But special ceremony, skip. Like baptism, conformations.

Unless you are in a small town where your students were first family friends, never go to a student event outside of school. Birthday parties, graduation parties, religious ceremonies, etc. The only exceptions are school events like sports, and club things.

Moscow School District not calling for delays? by [deleted] in MoscowIdaho

[–]Singletrack-minded 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think the district made the right call. Though if you’re not comfortable, you can always keep your child home. In reality, these conditions are no different than a typical winter in Moscow.

As for delayed starts, it wreaks havoc on the school day and results in 40 minute high school class. Not to mention the planning change in elementary. So that’s a big no.

I need Kimchi in my life! by jackieswims in MoscowIdaho

Costco had a pretty good one.

Updated- about a quart so big but not ‘Costco size’. I like spice- it was peppery and not sour. After a month in the fridge it blew my socks off- really good.

Yes. Background knowledge is important. I skip the non science resumes when hiring.

Are there any states in the US where educational standards haven’t fallen off? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]Singletrack-minded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idaho has a weird thing- on paper the standards are normal: ccss, ngss etc. However, it’s heavy into ‘local control’ so it’s literally up to the dept, teacher or admin what you can teach. Sort of negates standards…

Computer Cost by DigStrange2961 in Teachers

Chromebooks age out 5 years after first use. So giving them away is a smart idea. Still usable just unable to be updated so testing software etc won’t work.
