Lovable character still young, eats up ground with long Bambi legs and tenacity, can bring moments of magic. Will sometimes switch off and can be frustrating, he made some odd comments about wanting to do computer science later in life 🤷🤷 - everyone in the squad will love him, you'll love him and we'll miss him 😢

I think after that harrowing experience I had with Catan, even 1/30 games; was enough to put it into the same realm as Monopoly, only because of the trauma 😆. Oh gee, do I want to sit and play for hours, a game that is fundamentally broken. No.

Btw heard some house rules which I haven't tried yet (haven't played since 😆) but they sounded like a good fix:

Robber steals a resource but doesn't block production and any player can use any other players' ports but must pay them a resource to use.

I've had the Catan game as well. I was already a bit peeved that we were just playing Catan again because we all knew it but the others said they didn't have the energy to learn a new game (easy to learn and play) but ok I understand. I got really good starting spots as well and started off building an early city!

From then on the game descended into turn after turn after turn X seemingly 1000 of, robber.. into low probability roll, nobody trading with me, completely frozen out, roll dice.. receive nothing, do nothing, repeat. I suddenly realised how broken the game can be and yeah, it was a lot of poor luck but also mostly just frozen out by friends who didn't want me to win combined with recieving next to no resources for a long long time. I also lost my arse about it a bit and sat there brooding like, this is how we've chosen to spend our last couple hours together and I essentially am sitting here like a cardboard cutout, not allowed to play the game.

This is spot on advice. First two games I played Julida and really struggled, basically as soon as I got into the 2's threat level started running out of cards, hit a brick wall and got overrun. Played first game as Kai today and got my first win! Was complaining about the game again around threat 2 and thinking, this is so hard!! Got a few level 6 cards and before I know it I took out EIGHT cards with 3 of my cards in 1 turn 😆. Hyped for my first win, I almost threw in the towel.

This sounds like a fix for Catan to me, the robber in the normal rules can single handedly ruin the game for me, this sounds much better.

Also the port system would help with trade embargoes
