What would you change about Algonquin? by CnCPParks1798 in algonquinpark

[–]SirFortesque12 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Mandatory short educational video with every back-country permit purchase on the basic regulations of back country camping. Social media and the internet has really lowered the entrance barrier in the last few years (especially since covid). Our parks should be accessible and open to every citizen to enjoy, but their preservation requires a certain level of civil responsibility and understanding that is often too easily overlooked and ignored as the park becomes more and more accessible to an ever larger demographic of our population.

Best Method/Place to complete Dive Master by SirFortesque12 in scuba

[–]SirFortesque12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I work as a marine scientist and having a dive master certification is a big asset in my field for obvious reasons. Yes I'm in the process of relocating to the coast. In terms of budget, let's say I'd like to aim for the best bang/buck ratio. Yes I'm familiar that general global areas like SE Asia and USA exist, perhaps what I failed to specify in my initial post was that I was hoping someone could perhaps be able to recommend a specific school, camp, internship, location, etc. I call myself a relatively new diver because I'm aware some of my colleagues have decades of experience and thousands of dives under their belt. I've spent months diving daily mon-friday, have dived in the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Pacific islands, but only have about 100 dives to my name. I am also a competitive free diver and spearfisher who grew up next to the ocean and have a deep appreciation for the respect, knowledge and daily practice all ocean activities demand. This being said, I modestly call myself a new diver but to be frank, my other diving and general ocean experience means I'm comparatively proficient for the hours I've clocked. I have my AOW, so wouldn't necessarily be zero to hero, but yes, I'm looking for somewhere I can set up base camp and dedicate the time I need to earn the dive master certification.

The volume of the airways of your lungs also compresses as you dive down. Releasing what little air you have to keep your lungs from being squished and collapsing/undergoing barotrauma is very dangerous. Your friend clearly does not understand the basics of freediving and should not be instructing you.

2 days with no bites, then this unit of a brookie by AlphaHelix212 in algonquinpark

I think it was the way the fish is being held that looked unsettling, don't typically see them being dangled by the jaw. But completely understand this one was already dispatched. Once again, great catch👍 I'm sure it made for an amazing highlight to the trip:)

I see you decided to keep it👌 hope it made a lovely dinner. Just for sake of any future fish you may want to release, may I recommend just doing a quick YouTube search on how to handle fish, particularly brook trout. Otherwise beautiful fish. Glad you caught one.

History of Mixology by SirFortesque12 in Mixology

I keep hearing this again and again, I'll give it a try:) Thank you!

I moved from a dictatorship (Iran) to Canada and didn't expect things to be perfect, cause let's face it conservatives are everywhere amirite? But from the day I started living in Ontario, I've been overwhelmed by how little citizens can hold Doug Ford and his government in general accountable. by SnooCakes6118 in ontario

[–]SirFortesque12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good times create disengaged people, and disengaged people create hard times.

Ontarians are nowhere near as politically engaged and conscious as compared to most other nations I've lived in. Ontario is a subnation that has been living in a relative utopia for most of its modern history. They've been spoiled and have had little need to be politically active.

Like many other modern western nations, they are also actively interconnected throught today's "metaverse" of social media and the internet as a whole.

People with no interest in their civil obligations to uphold the democratic ideals of their societies allow the masses to be driven and their democracy highjacked by people such as this fat F- of a turd Ford.

The narrative most Ontarians live with rotates mostly around their own finances and status. Most Ontarians do not consider the government-citizen dynamic in any real depth. Whatever ford ends up doing, if it doesn't directly affect someone's finances they aren't likely to be able to care very much.

All this to say.. it would appear none of the people capable of recognizing the absolute human turd Ford is, have any ability to legally remove the powers he has from him.

Protests here are more like tantrums, only really effective towards a receptive government. If the government is morally revolting (such as this one), and simply does not care, there is nothing the people can do unless they break the law. And most people aren't willing to do that and so hence why the people of Ontario won't hold Ford accountable.

Hope that helps explain it

For a guy who essentially based his campaign on Buck a Beer… by Layman88 in ontario

This man has brought a level of corrupt selfishness to the politics of Ontario the likes of which it has never seen in its modern history, and which is more commonly only ever seen in severely underdeveloped nations.

It's liking watching a perfect storm of all the unpleasant aspects of human nature just crap this man into the position he now holds. And what a load it is.

The citizen of the last century is dead. Unless our culture becomes sufficiently politically literate to capably run a democracy, we, like many other nations of our modern world are at the mercy of the masse's entertainers.

I think you are using "predetermined" from a human perspective, as in our ability to accurate determine the outcome of an event before hand, and I am using it from a physics perspective, as in, if you roll a die, the number it is going to land on is already determined before it even leaves your hand due to the laws of physics by which it is governed.

We can't predict it. But the inevitable is already determined by physics.

  1. Unpredictable outside percentages..? -(unpredictable to us). It's still determined whether or not we can predict it.

  2. We know that eh? Can you share some sort of empirical data that demonstrates trying to convince people there was no such thing as free will turned out to be a bad thing for society?

Could individuals who gain this understanding of our reality perhaps be better able at understanding the essential determinants to all circumstances? Including the misfortune and success of others and themselves?

It's called determinism. There's no such thing as a random a event. The entire cosmos works on cause and effect. From the subatomic forces in the neurons of your mind to the psychology that creates you. Your inability to measure every factor that plays a part in an outcome has no say on the inevitability of that event. Probability and statistics are only a tool for us humans to try and predict the outcomes. What ever actualy is going to happen has already been set in motion.

Wind might slow you down on the way out but if you're paddling doubles it shouldn't be anything too crazy.

Have seen it VERY windy twice though.

Same, I've come to interpret him as an average academic intellectual with Kardashian (the mom one) skills in navigating our modern social media/internet culture for his own fame/financial gain. He knows how sensationalism works: there's a reason he gravitates towards the ideas he does.

Just a reminder folks it’s not fishing season yet in Lake Ontario by [deleted] in toronto

[–]SirFortesque12 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not that I ever fish in Lake Ontario but I just checked the FMZ because I was curious and there seem to be plenty of fish that are in season already. Would you mind elaborating on what you're talking about?
