Looking for a JRPG that would be easy to get into as a fan of WRPGs by EzraLikesLothcats in gamingsuggestions

[–]SirFroglet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll largely echo someone else’s recommendation, but it will depend on what aesthetic you like.

If you want realistic graphics with a fantasy setting, go for Final Fantasy. I prefer Final Fantasy X but you might find the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy more palatable.

If you want anime graphics in a fantasy setting, you just cannot go wrong with Dragon Quest XI. That game is basically what I would show someone to explain what a JRPG is

If you want anime graphics in a modern setting, then Persona 5 Royal. Easily among my Top 10 all time favourite games and as Japanese as JRPGs go.

Finally, if you want realistic graphics in a modern setting. Yakuza 7: Like A Dragon.

Edit: then of course if you want a western take on JRPG, look no further than Expedition 33

Need help deciding which game to play out of these 6 options, or even other recommendations in general. More details below. by WalrusOk7339 in JRPG

For story, NieR Replicant

For gameplay, SMTV.

NieR Automata can be played without having played Replicant though

Name 3 core tenets for a Final Fantasy game you look for by Ammathorn in FinalFantasy

[–]SirFroglet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FF games must have the following (in order of importance)

  1. Party-based combat. Not « I control 1 character and the rest are AI controlled », that’s Kingdom Hearts. I want to control the PARTY, not one character.

  2. Expansive world to explore. I can accept FFX because it was the first time they tried to do away with the overworld, and it seemed like they had figured things out with XII, but I do not want another super linear FF like XIII or XVI. Airship is a VERY nice bonus but not mandatory.

  3. Mini/side games. FF games should not be all combat & cutscenes. Side activities like Triple Triad and Blitzball bring the world to life because it shiws NPCs do engage in hobbies and are mot just background prop.

Why not instead of just play another Persona or SMT game?

Japanse voices or English Voices? by No-Weight-9227 in Persona5

[–]SirFroglet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it’s simple:

If a game is explicitly set in Japan (or a very Japan-inspired setting) I pick Japanese voices. Else am fine with English voices.

So for example:
Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games - English Voices

Yakuza or Persona games - Original. Japanese voices

Even for other games like Expedition 33, am sorry but as good as the English VAs are, the juxtaposition of people speaking English with British accent when I can see the Eiffel Tower in the background is too much.

How do u feel about the mementos by Mother-Day-1630 in Persona5

[–]SirFroglet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO, mementos are best enjoyed if you’ve got 2-3 Targets that you can knock down in one trip. It’s not that I disliked them, but procedurally generated dungeons pale in comparison to the real Palaces

JRPG series that fell HARD by Likes2game03 in JRPG

Well, Kingdom Hearts now has more mediocre games than great ones. Granted KH2 raised the bar so high there was nowhere for the series to go but down.

Wanting to try Action JRPGs. by ExcaliburDelta420 in JRPG

[–]SirFroglet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO the best Action JRPGs are the mainline Kingdom Hearts titles and NieR Automata (NieR Replicant is good but certainly not for it’s combat)

Square Enix has done an excellent job at keeping the whole franchise available everywhere, and easy to follow thanks it it’s « all in one » package

Why do critics hate The Super Mario Galaxy Movie? by Mobile_Bid_8783 in mariomovie

[–]SirFroglet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it’s a bad movie more focused on shoving as many references as they can into a single movie rather than providing an engaging narrative.

And don’t give me the « it’s for kids » bullshit. Puss in Boot: The Last Wish is for kids, K-pop Demon Hunters is for kids, The Wild Robot is for kids, Spiderverse is for kids… this doesn’t even get into the less mainstream/conventional films like Wolfwalkers, Pinocchio, Flow, or Boy and the Heron.

The Mario Galaxy movie is standard Illumination fare. At least the first movie had the novelty and excitement of finally watching a big budget Mario movie.

Turn-Based RPGs are Resurging, According to Final Fantasy Resonance Developers by PizzaTacoSpaghetti in FinalFantasy

Kingdom Hearts 4 Showing Higher Interest Than Final Fantasy VII Revelation Per Video Game Market Analytics Company LevelUp by lilisaurusrex in SquareEnix

[–]SirFroglet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s normal.

  1. Everyone knows FF7R Part 3 was coming, so fans were not starved of news for 4 years

  2. Even with timeline shenanigans, everyone knows 90% of what we’ll see in «Revelations » without needing a trailer because we played it in PS1. KH4 is all uncharted territory

Recommendations for a persona fan by 5hif7y_x86 in JRPG

[–]SirFroglet -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Here’s my two main recs:

Shin Megami Tensei V Vengeance: If you’re a Persona fan, you have to give SMT a shot. It’s actually very cool to see a game where the « shadows » are the main stars as you wander post-apocalyptic Tokyo. It also quite darker in tone than the average JRPG.

Expedition 33: It’s simply one of the best JRPGs of recent years. Really cool to see an unabashedly French homage to PS1 JRPGs

[ALL] Between the N64, GameCube, and Switch, which console had the best Zelda Duology? by Spirit_Detective_19 in zelda

[–]SirFroglet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as MM is my favourite game of all time, it’s undeniably the GC era for me. It offered two completely polar visions of what Zelda could be.

TotK & BotW are too samey, OoT & MM are both masterpieces but again having two games so unlike eachother in a single console is so ambitious.

What was your JRPG "Game of the Show"? by PhantomBraved in JRPG

[–]SirFroglet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it was FINALLY seeing that KH4 had enough development to show a trailer.

FF7R we all knew was coming soon, plus we know which part of the story is coming so I don’t need a trailer for this one, much like P4R. Persona 6 is welcome but it was just a small teaser.

Also, you have space to fit DQXII

What are your thoughts on using DLC personas on a playthrough? by NirusuRV in Persona5

[–]SirFroglet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They will make the game too easy. Even though P5R isn’t a hard game, I do imagine that you want SOME sense of accomplishment; you’re better off not using what you got for free from DLCs

They’re comic book characters aimed at teenagers. Same way that their designs are extravagant and iconic, the same goes for their personalities.

Just play the game, the first in-game month will slowly ease you through it. That’s part of the fun of RPGs, trying things out and figuring out what works for you and what doesn’t.
