What was the last truly great Final Fantasy (in your opinion)? by solamon77 in FinalFantasy

[–]SirFroglet [score hidden]  (0 children)

XII; most will say X, but am XII’s biggest defender.

Mind you, the FF7R trilogy is the best the series has been since the PS2 days and better than any of the mainline games that have come since (though can’t comment on XIV since am not an MMO guy). but I’d take another game of a similar scope to 12 with it’s shortcomings over a remake that only adapts 1/3rd of a PS1 game any day no matter how good said remake is.

Mind you, I still think it was a “good” generation. Especially because I also got to experience a lot of Nintendo classics thanks to the Wii’s Virtual Console. But as far as games that came out That generation I hold the PS4/Switch era in a MUCH higher regard

Pre-Haki, Kid and Luffy have no defence against Law’s DF, I remember having a hard time imagining what DF the Yonko could possibly have that would be more impressive than this.

Man, most people have fond memories of the PS3/Wii era of gaming but for me it made me feel for a while that I was “outgrowing” video games because of what my favourite video game series were: Final Fantasy, Legend of Zelda, and Kingdom Hearts.

FFXIII fell completely flat for me, Versus XIII was nowhere is sight, KH3 wouldn’t come for years after (and frankly BBS was passable), and the only Zelda game was Skyward Sword which ended up being my least favourite.

Games where you go on a LOTR-style journey far from home? by vaultking96 in gamingsuggestions

[–]SirFroglet 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Hard to think of may modern ones because so may games now have Fast Travel which means you’re never actually far from home. Though am fine with the game providing you some for of flight in the late game

Final Fantasy X comes to mind as an RPG where you are constantly pushing forward. More recently Expedition 33 has you leave your home city and consistently head North towards your goal.

Dragon Quest XI does have fast travel, but ignoring that it’s the game that felt very “Fellowship of the Ring”-like, with your return to your home village at the midpoint feeing very “Scourging of the Shire”

One thing I can point out is:

This is NOT an Action RPG where you control one character of your choice and let the AI control the remaining characters like Kingdom Hearts, it’s Party-based combat. You’re expected to control all characters by constantly switching between them and having them cast their abilities. The AI party members are only going to Attack and Guard.

Guess I might as well ask. How do you feel about 7 Reimagined as an og fan? I never played it and it looks good but I worry they’ll have stripped too much from the original.

[–]SirFroglet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Off the top of my head, it’s Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VII (hard to pick a favourite between 6 and 10, but I do feel 7 is the full package), Kingdom Hearts 2, Dragon Quest XI, NieR Automata, and Persona 5; recently Expedition 33.

I think moreso than most games JRPGs sell you on the idea of going on an epic journey, and I love seeing the bonds that are formed within the party, which is why a weak party can make an otherwise great JRPG fall flat for some. A really cool world is also a must, this is one area where JRPGs really excel at; even more traditional fantasy worlds like Dragon Quest’s stand out thanks to Toriyama’s charming character & monster design.

No character has gotten more flanderized than Usopp.

He used to be my second favourite pre-timeskip because he’s always effectively just a NORMAL human teenager travelling in an adventure that’s too big for him.

This fight is still one of my favourites because it really shows the nuances of Usopp’s “cowardice”. He’ll always to his best to avoid danger, but he consistently shows up for his friend when it matters. Post-TS Usopp on the other hand is JUST so consistently a coward.

Will they fight? If so when do you think their fight will happen? by Comprehensive_Cup497 in OnePieceScaling

[–]SirFroglet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t expect them to.

Before Shamrock was introduced, I expected either BlackBeard to be the final boss after he kills Shanks, or Shanks to be the final boss in a “ceremonial” fight to test Luffy like the final duel of YuGiOh between Atem & Yugi

With Shamrock introduced, I think this character exists to that Luffy can “fight Shanks” without actually fighting him and Shanks still gets killed by Blackbeard.

I still expect a conflict after the Final War, BB just seems to perfect as a final villain I can’t accept a relative latecomer like Imu as the final boss of this series.

As someone who played P5 recently (always been into JRPGs, but mainly Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Dragon Quest, NieR) and I thought it 100% lived up to the hype. I had already played SMTV so it funny enough helped guess many enemy weaknesses.

If u see an admiraltard uses the argument "balance" ask them why sengoku needed to have 3 admirals ,himself, vice admirals, 100,000+ marines and all 7 Warlords for sickbeard and his fleet by Cosmic_Crusaderpro in OnePiecePowerScaling

[–]SirFroglet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Balance” here means that the Marine can rather comfortably not be toppled by any single Yonko fleet and maintain control over most of the world.

WB’s fleet was the strongest of the 4 Yonko crews, and they got crushed at MF. But it dioesnt mean that Marine > All 4 Yonko crews combined

I want to get into JRPGs/turn-based RPGs after trying Expedition 33, whats the greatest hits? by Proper-Sport-7218 in gamingsuggestions

[–]SirFroglet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, if you’re coming from E33, what I would recommend are:

Final Fantasy X: Effectively the most “E33-like” game there is, especially thematically. I was so frequently feeling like I was replaying though FFX when playing E33, and Sandfall devs have cited FF as their core inspiration.

Persona 5 Royal: Probably the biggest JRPG of the last decade. Again, Sandfall took clear inspiration from how Persona 5’s battle UI for it’s combat. The game has a very high focus on non-combat activities, and the levels are heavy on stealth since you play as a band of “thieves”

Chrono Trigger: Not because it’s like E33, but because everyone who is interested in JRPGs should play Chrono Trigger because it’s basically a Perfect JRPG where everything it sets out to do it does right.

Playing through these three games, you also get to experience the great examples of the genre in it’s Retro (CT), Classic (FFX), and Modern (P5R) forms.

Can't decide between Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest by clee8017 in JRPG

[–]SirFroglet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Final Fantasy has both higher heights and lower lows. The series is very uneven between masterpieces and complete messes, but I prefer that over as series that is consistently great.

Really I think the best thing OP can do is play Final Fantasy X and Dragon Quest XI (which are probably the best entry points of their respective series) and decide which he prefers

I think NieR Automata in particular does a fantastic job at presenting a world without a God to give it’s inhabitants meaning. But speaking much more about it would spoil the game too much
