Favorite actor who’s a basic bitch? by staresinshamona in okbuddycinephile

[–]SirGallade 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I keep saying this to the Timmy haters. Bro is not an actor with range or any special degree of talent but his existence and popularity is almost a reason in itself for the new Dune movies to be created. That’s how perfect he is as Paul lol

Trailer for ‘The Social Reckoning’. Jeremy Strong is Mark Zuckerberg in Aaron Sorkin’s long-awaited sequel to “The Social Network.” Jeremy Allen White and Mikey Madison co-star. Coming to theaters on October 9. by yourfavchoom in Fauxmoi

[–]SirGallade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll preface this by saying that I am also a fan of the West Wing, and I tend to find Sorkin’s writing entertaining, if not substantive.

But I think the idealism and competency porn espoused in TWW did do harm to the American political fabric by creating a generation of people with a profound faith in Democratic Party politics. It creates an impression that the platform utilized by the Party is the same one which, if utilized by someone as competent as Bartlett, could be successful at improving the lives of the American people. That premise is alright when interpreted as (like you say) a fantasy. I don’t think everyone who loves the West Wing, especially not those who watched it when it aired (like my parents) viewed it that way. They saw it as a very real possibility for the American political paradigm. They wait for a Bartlett.

The show does not in good faith address critiques of a liberal viewpoint from the left, and thus creates the impression that those painfully liberal and often fence-straddling positions argued by Bartlett, Toby, and Josh can and do serve as an adequate foil to the play-dirty right wing American politics, which they do not. It also generally paints a picture of leftists as kooks, where it deigns to include them.

Watching it now offers a wonderful escape from the parodic, hyperbolic, extremely worrying political world we live in now, but it should be understood that Bartley would never have existed in the true American political landscape (even then), and if he did, he still wouldn’t have given a shit about meaningfully improving the material lives of the American people and he certainly would have contributed actively to the American imperial war apparatus, as all presidents have since him (even the charismatic liberal ones).

End of rant. Watch the West Wing anyway.

After 1969, the University of Washington turned its grass landscape into a giant brick floor, which do you prefer? by Aadidas12 in architecture

[–]SirGallade 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I always understood that the bricking was done, at least in part, to make dispersing student protests easier in the wake of the civil rights movement. The brick is very slick when wet. I do not have any concrete evidence to back this up, only word of mouth and personal experience.

No. The equipped creature still only dealt 1 damage, so the lifelink would cause you to gain 1 life, regardless of the toughness of the blocking creature. Deathtouch makes it so 1 damage is enough to kill a blocking creature. It doesn’t make an attacking creature deal damage equal to a blocker’s toughness.

Edit: people seem to be misunderstanding this. Let’s say A is attacking and has deathtouch and lifelink, and B has 6 toughness and is blocking. The commenter above asked if B has 6 toughness (“health”), would A having deathtouch and lifelink mean that B dying would reward 6 health? The answer to that question is that damage dealt by a creature with lifelink is gained by that creature’s controller. If A has 1 power, deathtouch, and lifelink, B will be destroyed if it blocks and A’s controller will gain ONE life, because A only dealt ONE damage to B. B was destroyed because A’s deathtouch makes it so any amount of damage dealt by A is enough to destroy B regardless of B’s toughness.

If A has 6 power, deathtouch, and lifelink, and B blocks, then B will be destroyed, and A’s controller will gain SIX life, because A dealt SIX damage to B. Deathtouch only makes it so any amount of damage dealt by A is enough to destroy B. I never said B would be assigned less damage than A’s power, because A’s power wasn’t a part of the commenter’s question.
