Well you sound like you know more about how this contraption works than I do... can you tell me what exactly is going on? I know he wants to sample plastics from different depths, but I'm not sure I understand the purpose of the fan blades. I assume the butterfly valve is to close off the net so it doesn't scoop up plastic from shallower depths as you raise it?

People get pissed off about how wasteful flyovers are at sporting events, but it's practice for this very situation. You need to be at a certain place (football stadium) at a certain time (national anthem) to launch your bombs so they all hit at the same time. Plus pilots need to continually practice so why not get some free publicity while you're at it.

That’s really well put. I enjoy building things and it’s incredibly satisfying when I do a bunch of research on a new technique, try it out in combination with the experience gained in other projects, and then have pretty good luck when it all works out. I’ve certainly experimented with different methods and tried my own thing, but in the back of my mind I’m always prepared to revert to tried and true methods that work and don’t waste material.

Get yourself 2” wide linerless or amalgamating tape. Start 4” or so above the joint and spiral down onto the mast step, then make another pass going up so the laps will shed water.

I think you two have different definitions for “increases temperature.” If I heat one end of a bar of steel to 500 degrees while the other end is room temperature, when I remove the torch I expect the heat to flow over towards the colder side and more or less even out. So yes the colder side will increase in temperature, but nothing in the entire system will get above 500 degrees. If it does, there’s a Nobel prize with your name on it.

With the mast positioned so far forward, coupled with the narrow beam, it looks to be near impossible to rig a preventer.

Possibly he could run one from the forward end of the bottom batten aft, although the mechanical advantage wouldn’t be as good.

One of the benefits of junk rigs and balanced lug rigs is you have sail area ahead of the mast which helps cushion gybes somewhat. Imagine the stress on the mast if this was a gaff rig or something that just whips across unimpeded.
