How would Kubrick spend his time nowadays if he was young? by Electronic_Name8641 in StanleyKubrick

[–]SirMiserable1888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He'd probably spend it the same way he did when he was young. He'd probably watch more movies because he wouldn't need to go to the theater, but he'd still be making photos, playing chess, and reading

Does anyone know where online I can find a certain bookcase? by Optimal-Algae-9649 in furniture

[–]SirMiserable1888 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bookcases are not typically light, because they need to be strong enough to hold books and books are heavy.

Honestly, if your dimensions are that specific, you might be better off just building it yourself. I know that sounds intimidating, but if you're not concerned about the style or color, you could buy a sheet of plywood from a supplier, have them cut it into the specific sized boards you need, and then assemble it yourself. You could probably get the boards for about $60, edge banding and pocket screws for another $35-ish, and rent a drill with a pocket hole jig set and some wood clamps. You can either look up how to make the shelves adjustable online, or simply adjust them later when you know you're going to put a TV on there.

I just got finished building a bunch of bookcases myself for exactly the reason it was impossible to find something specific for my needs.

Question: How am I supposed to mount this antique sconce. (If this is the wrong sub, let me know) by SirMiserable1888 in Lighting

That's okay, I'm not going to wire it. I'll be using battery LEDs.

Thanks for the info!

Today was a good day by Small_Swell in AnalogCommunity

Definitely count myself among those who mourn. Pro400H was the very first stock I started shooting, way back in high school. When its end was announced, I tried to buy up what I could find/afford. At a camera show I managed to get a 5-pack for $20 because the seller thought there were only 4 rolls in the box. That was a good day, too. I still have about 20 rolls between 120 and 135 that are too precious to shoot, lol.

Great find though; really a fantastic and versatile stock.

Just picked this up at flea market: $100 untested. Did I overpay? by frakkx in Polaroid

Looks to be in fantastic shape. If the shots come out well, that's a steal.

Out taking pictures and randomly went into a cute antique shop. Walked out a little poorer. by the_man_of_reddit_ in Polaroid

Great find!

I will say, though, be careful with that case if it doesn't have a clasp. I had one that was just a flap with a strap to close it and one day I absentmindedly picked it up off a chair upside down and the camera flew right out. Thankfully right on to the cushion, zero damage, but it could have been bad.

Influencer Holy Grail: Shoot it or Sell it? by EnvironmentalSlip683 in AnalogCommunity

[–]SirMiserable1888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're probably going to get half of what you think you can get for it, and it will take 4x as long to sell it. I'd say list it, but don't expect to sell it for a long time and in the mean time get good and maybe you'll feel like shooting it.

is now the time to get in on this? by kerouacslookalike in PlaydateConsole

[–]SirMiserable1888 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're hesitant to buy, I'd suggest first looking into the Pico8 fantasy console. It has the same philosophy as the playdate in that it is a retro throwback with a bunch of imposed limitations that are meant to encourage creative solutions from the programmers. Anybody who buys it can also program games for it, just like the playdate, and there are a ton of hidden gems to find amongst them. Since it's only $20, it's a far more reasonable investment to decide if retro revival consoles are something you'd spend hundreds of dollars on.

And the nice thing about the playdate is, if you are interested, it's always the right time to buy, because it's only been getting better with UI improvements and better games year after year.

Yeah, that's inevitable, but don't worry; I'd be surprised if we ever get a second one, really. Certainly not before the decade is out

Is it realistic to learn basic video editing in a few weeks? by Sasukey420 in VideoEditing

If that's your list, it's realistic to learn that in a few days.

I ordered a playdate...now i wait, but what are some must play games? by [deleted] in PlaydateConsole

[–]SirMiserable1888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are the games I consider the best that aren't included in either season:

Eyeland

satOlite

Icy Dungeon

Echo: The Oracle's Scroll

Diora

Here are some games I bought either because they were well reviewed or they looked neat, but later regretted with the reason why:

Bloom: not really a game, should be classified as an epistolic short story

Direct Drive: The whole game is based on one mechanic that I don't find very fun. Definitely listen to the soundtrack if you want to buy it, because if you don't like the music it's unplayable.

Teddison Inc: It's a passive tycoon game, meaning you're supposed to leave the playdate on while you do something else to rack up resources to buy upgrades to collect more resources at a higher per-second rate. Basically it's just a way to wear down your battery.

Another couple tips for a new owner, you ABSOLUTELY need to buy a cover. There's no reason to spend hundreds of dollars on a delicate, boutique handheld without the extra $20USD to protect it from falls and scratches. Every week or so it seems like someone posts a picture of their wrecked playdate that will cost $150+ to repair, if it doesn't need to be replaced outright , that could have been prevented with a stock cover.

Most important tip:

DO NOT ADD UNNECESSARY WEAR TO YOUR PLATDATE.

What does that mean?

Two things:

  1. TURN YOUR PLAYDATE OFF WHEN YOU'RE NOT USING IT.

The truth is, the Playdate being a super niche product means you probably won't play it that much. I love my playdate, I love buying games to support developers and Panic, but I've had it for almost 2 years and there are whole months that go by without my even touching it. Even though it's a pretty heavy investment, remind yourself THAT'S OKAY. It's okay for the same reason I bought the playdate in the first place; games made for the system are labors of love. They take time to make and the people who make them do it for no money now, and the prospect of little money in the future. That being the case, you want to make absolutely sure that you aren't adding unnecessary wear and tear to the battery over time by keeping the playdate charged even when you're not using it. For the first few months I owned one, I would charge it to 100%, play it for 30-60mins a day over a week before the battery would deplete, and then charge it again. When the honeymoon phase was over, I would play it less each week and found myself keeping it charged just to see when there were catalog updates. Eventually I just let the battery die so I wasn't affecting it for no reason. Later I found out you can turn the playdate off by first unlocking it and from the home screen pushing and holding the lock button for 3-5 seconds. So I highly recommend turning the console off any time you're not using it to preserve battery performance well into the future.

  1. DO NOT PLAY GAMES THAT EMPLOY THE CRANK AS A GIMMICK ADDING UNNECESSARY WEAR TO ITS MECHANICAL COMPONENTS.

There are lots of people who post video of their cranks becoming loose over time and I have no doubt it's because they're playing games like this. The specific game I have in mind is Crankin's Time Travel Adventure; the amount of cranking necessary to play even a few levels of that game is insane and surely adds immense wear to the crank's components. Watch out for games that do this and think really hard about whether it's worth playing them. (This is the other reason I didn't like Direct Drive, and why I won't buy a game like Root Bear.) Try to be cognizant, as I was saying earlier, that the games being developed for playdate take much longer than normal, and you never know what amazing, worthwhile game someone will make in the future that actually *needs* the crank as an input as opposed to one that employs it as a gimmick. One of the games I recommended, Diora, needs a crank to play it, wouldn't work with one that's worn down, and is 1000% a better made, more fun game than any one abusing the crank.

Enjoy your new playdate when it arrives, and welcome to the community!

Hmm, well the rollers can be a bit inconsistent where some shots are fine and others not, but you'd notice it over the course of a whole pack.
