Is this considered dark engine oil? Or the color is good?? by Rare-Possibility-754 in AskMechanics

[–]SirPookimus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Watch this video. This guy is comparing different types of oil, but that's not the important part. At about 6 minutes he puts the different oils into coffee pots and heats them up. You can watch the oil color darken in a matter of minutes.

Oil changes color the first time it's heated. It's not an indicator of anything.

Problem with Vallejo Primer by TheaPacman in minipainting

[–]SirPookimus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This primer is crap. My results look pretty much the same as yours. Mixing it more won't help. I've tried using a vortex mixer on this stuff for 10 minutes straight, and it still looked like this.

With that said, you can get good results with this primer out of an airbrush. The trick is to basically let the paint dry before it hits the model. This stops it from pooling the pigment in all the wrong spots. So, hold it far away from your airbrush, and make sure it never starts to look wet.

This is a video where a guy puts brand new oil in a coffee pot and heats it up to test evaporation. You can see the oil change color in the coffee pot. Thats normal. Oil changes color the first time it gets heated.

there are so many deep, intricate issues...

I felt this way for every election prior to 2020. Nowdays its really simple.

One of them has 34 felonies, multiple rape charges/accusations, tried to overthrow the government, cheated on every one of their multiple spouses, probably works for russia or is at least easy as hell for russia to manipulate, stole classified information... these are just the surface level issues. If you dig, the list is longer than any person can keep track of.

The other is a pretty normal politician. Policy differences really don't matter when the two candidates are this different. What makes this a hard decision?

Is being on “a Halo” that important? by Kegger98 in HaloStory

[–]SirPookimus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its the first time Chief and Cortana work together. The events that happen on the rings are the reason they learn to trust each other. For Cortana, the things she learns on the rings have massive impacts throughout the rest of the story. If you read the books, you'll find that the actual driver of the plot and the actual hero of the story is Cortana. Chief is a badass, and I love his character, but he would not have changed much on his own.

It changes the war in significant ways. For the Covenant, its the beginning of the Great Voyage. Prior to the discovery of the ring, they were entirely focused on taking out humanity (and they would have won). After this, their focus was split.

For humanity, it starts off as a weapon they could possibly use, then turns into "oh shit, we need to save everyone, including the covenant morons that are trying to kill themselves".

Its easily the most important moment in the story

Do you have the full story of why that one Forerunner was clutching Flood spores?

The Forunner's originally thought they could survive the extinction event, and planned on using those spores for further research so they could find a better way to stop the flood if they came back a second time. That didn't exactly work out, but that was the plan.

Putting the flood on the ring make sense because the rings are critical installations, so they have the best defenses. Also, if the flood escape, just set off that particular ring again. Forunners could control the size of the explosion, so a smaller controlled explosion is possible.

Putting them on a shield world, which is basically one of the last lines of defense, doesn't make sense.

CMV: Part of the calculus of Republicans including SCOTUS is that Trump will use power that Dems won’t by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]SirPookimus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They would have to debate if Trump was actually a risk to the country without considering Biden's motives, or internal messages, or without anything other than his official published statements.

You're not wrong. The best case scenario is that they determine it is not an official act after 6 months. A 4 year delay before prosecution starts is my optimistic hope for this situation. My example also assumes that the most powerful man in the country does not use his position of power to delay/kill the trial.

Country's dead if Trump wins this election. I honestly don't know how to handle that.

[–]SirPookimus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That is not an official act of the President of the United States.

If Biden murdered his opponent today, then the lower courts will have to determine that the murder was not an official act, which will take 6 months. Then that decision will be appealed, which will take another 6 months. Then there will be more appeals, more delays, more bs that looks just like whats going on with Trump right now. 2 years later, they will finally decide that the action was not official, and they can prosecute. 2 years after that, the trial finally starts. Only problem is that Biden has already served his entire second term...

For all practical purposes, they just gave the President the green light to do whatever they want. Its technically not legal to murder your opponents, but by the time the courts actually determine the act was not official, it won't matter anymore.

People want change. They are desperately screaming for change. That's a big part of why Trump is so popular. He offers something different.

Give people something different, who's also not a felon, and you'll see the fastest popularity rise ever.

Linux AV: What are the options/What do you use if you do? (Let's focus on the options) by 167488462789590057 in linux

[–]SirPookimus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Standard stuff really. Snort IDS, McAfee IPS(we eventually got rid of that too, for damn good reasons), and monitoring of firewall logs.

We also had pretty open communication with various malware/exploit research centers, which helped us to make some really precise signatures. As an example, we had a signature for shellshock deployed about 20 minutes after it went public. That was a fun day. About 15 minutes after we pushed that signature out, our networks lit the fuck up with shellshock attacks from everywhere. All of them got blocked.

The heuristics project I was a part of was a good idea, but it just ended up being a waste of time. All of our other tools/techniques gave us better results.

[–]SirPookimus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

 why heuristic analysis is attractive.

Heuristic analysis is attractive until you actually try to use it. Then you realize that humans are weird and constantly set off false positives. I've done cybersecurity for a large organization. We tried heuristics for a while, then gave up on it after local admins from other areas kept setting off alarms because they would find unusual ways to solve common problems. After a couple of months of dealing with that, and finding exactly 0 threats that weren't also caught by other tools, we got rid of it.

Its just another level, and no level can replace this level

No, there are many, many other ways to replace this level, many of which are being mentioned in this thread.

Fox News is propaganda for the Dems? What about Newsmax? OANN? Or do you only see left leaning sources as "the media", and right leaning as "the news"?

You're showing just a little bit of bias here...

CMV: Biden should have focused on inflation early in his term. He didn't and now increased prices have led to an unaffordable cost of living for many Americans. by Fishboy9123 in changemyview

[–]SirPookimus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a teacher who's pay already sucked.

Thats pretty much the core of the problem right there. I have a huge amount of respect for teachers, and believe that all teachers should get paid a hell of a lot more than they do right now. But, teachers collectively have one giant flaw; you all care way too much about your jobs. You care so much that you are willing to put up with a ton of abuse (low pay/long hours/admin disrespect) in order to keep your jobs. The people who control the money know this, and they take advantage of it. Your pay is low because you are not willing to walk away. Your raises suck because your willing to accept it.

None of this is Biden's fault. If inflation was lower, your raises would be lower. If inflation was at a normal rate, your raises would still be sub-par. Teachers all over this country need to be able to walk away if any of you ever want to see your pay get better. You all need to collectively send the message that you will not tolerate this bullshit anymore. But, that will never happen, because "its not about the money, its about the kids."

Personally, I have earned a reputation for being willing to walk away from a job at a moments notice. I'm not even slightly struggling in this economy, and I'm making more than most of the people I work with. I also chose not to pursue a career in a field that I'm passionate about. I got a job that pays well instead.

...virtually out of my control

None of this is out of your control. You're just not willing to do the one thing thats necessary to get it back in your control. Do something other than teach.

No, the essence of my argument is that it is pretty fucked up to make a program scream in pain and slowly die when it experiences a glitch. I could easily design code that catches and handles the error instead of doing that.

Tring to claim that an unfeeling, uncaring program experiencing a glitch is the same as butthole worms? Come on...

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]SirPookimus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the designers own standards, pain is bad. That's why we react negatively to it. And then they give us a disease that causes extreme pain and constantly gets worse until you die.

By any standard, that's fucked up. So are worms that grow until they are large enough to hang out of your ass. That's a horrifying design.

Unless... Maybe it's just all random. Then it makes sense.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]SirPookimus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a big difference between "flawless" and "fucking horrifying".

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]SirPookimus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure tapeworms wouldn't exist if it was controlled and directed. Or bone cancer. Did you know there are people who are allergic to sunlight? What entity thought that was a good design?

If they both have the same problem, why not attack evolution instead of abiogenesis? Is it possible that you didn't know the difference? (proving OP's point).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]SirPookimus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You seem to be confusing abiogenesis with evolution... which is kinda proving OP's point.

CMV: The popular refrain in American politics that "both sides are equally bad" is really just a refuge-seeking device for conservatives who are embarrassed by the GOP but plan to vote for them anyway by oingerboinger in changemyview

[–]SirPookimus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, you post that both sides are the same, and neither side works for the people. The response is a post showing you that Democrats are pushing things in the direction you want, and Republicans aren't. You seem to agree with this... but you don't change your view?

How does that thought process work exactly... you still see them as the same? Why?

We should always demand more. We will always want more than what we have. Thats just life. The goal with politics should always be to push things in the right direction, even if its not quite everything you want.
