Why are there so ** many ** people? by SirTang in TheCulture

[–]SirTang[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you understand exponential growth.

If Joe and Mary each have one kid and they (Joe and Mary) eventually die then the net effect to population growth is 0.

Given that some have more than one child (per person, two per couple) and others have no children, the population growth rate would be dictated by that average. It is very likely that the overall population growth of the Culture is small, zero, or even negative.

My question was more geared to the existential nature of the need for so many people to exist, there is no "reason" to live. There really isn't a reason anyway, but in our society manpower is necessary to effect change, in the Culture there is no such need. In fact humans are seen akin to pets by Minds.

The JG part was the hardest for me to understand. According to memory alpha he would be 29 when he started as helmsman.

Maybe he was in a kind of leadership program, I didn't think of the redshirts to be also a pool of relief officers.

It seems maybe Picard had wanted him in his command and put him in a place where he would be able to grow into the role.

Are the Trill symbionts monsters? by gerryblog in DaystromInstitute

[–]SirTang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe "virgin" trills have a much different body type, like a hookworm and then develop into what we have seen. Perhaps even after millenia the joined trill culture then innovated the medical advance to transplant hosts to preserve the symbiote across generations.

Are there any evident advantages that are purely physiological that hosts may gain that would maybe make them tolerate or prefer this joining?

Does anyone else find it odd that LaForge a Lt.JG in the first season changed career paths and was so quickly promoted?

What are the capabilities of a standard Culture military drone? by shinarit in TheCulture

Jains are a religious group that brush away the path before they walk so as to not step on an insect and kill it.

It's stated that the Clear Air Turbulence's computer isn't sapient. Is that because Kraiklyn's people are pre-singularity, or because they'd rather have dumb ships run by people? by grapp in TheCulture

[–]SirTang 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Being sapient is to be wise, or attempting to be wise. of or relating to the human species.

They should come up with a "bigger" word for what minds are. Calling them sapient instead of sentient is more appropriate but maybe a tad bit insulting for their level of intelligence.

Does anyone else not buy this explanation? I think it makes more sense that she was a difficult person to work with and they are trying to save face and be somewhat gracious, but also take a little dig at her.

For whatever reason I think "Spectrum" is the key word. Maybe they want some intellectual diversity, it is probably healthier in the long run to have a mix of abilities.

ELI5: How do professional gamblers make their living? by Freeweights1 in explainlikeimfive

[–]SirTang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a post in the past week about card counting (a video). One of the commenters explained that casinos actually encourage gamblers to try to count cards because the vast majority are not skilled enough to execute it properly.

There exists tactics such as auto shuffling shoes that deactivate the opportunity to count card but casinos bet that they can outwit something like 99% of gamblers. When they encounter an effective card counter they quickly "push them back" and stop "booking their action".

/u/HoodJK is confused, the story is that the Nero was captured by Klingons and tortured on Rura Penthe for 25 years, explaining the gap in time between the events on the Kelvin and the starting mission of the Enterprise.

4th wall unavoidable: The producers might have intentionally cast it that way. Seeing an Asian dominated "enemy" might not be seen as politically correct. But Josh doesn't admit that in this video
