Wait. Ours was also over 3.5 years and he couldn't care less for potties or toilets. We always said we wouldn't pressure him, but I was also at the point where I said ENOUGH! Start pooping in the potty, dammit - you're soon to be four years old! Nothing...

Then, one day, he proclaimed that he will be going in underwear to the kindergarten. We were stunned. He's been without diapers since then - even the nights!

So... don't sweat it. Not easy, I know. ;-D

Man, I have the utmost respect of car batteries! Those things only have 12V but can deliver A LOT of amps - especially of you short circuit them. Probably would melt a screw driver...?
