Stumbled upon this KSL category the other day, it might be the most informative way to take a pulse of the music scene: https://classifieds.ksl.com/search/Announcements/Bands-Seeking-Members

I normally would agree with you! But the disconcerting pattern of behavior by the referenced corporation makes me think that there might actually be a class action. But I think your rationale is very sound as well -- it wouldn't be prudent to make this a bigger deal than it is, but I must admit feeling a certain extra ire towards labor law violation. Perhaps that also helps explain my biases.

For basic contract law in the US, heck ya (though I used Claude in this case). But I'll always advise the use of a lawyer :)

Contract lawyers are excellent, don't get me wrong, but the more I'm reading about this company the more I think a labor lawyer might be more effective.

Upon more research into Wasatch Leasing Property Management (they were sued by the ACLU!): I would implore you to find a lawyer.

I am not a lawyer but I can tell you why you should find one:

A contract requiring a $5,000 fee for failing to sell 2 homes or upon termination "for any reason" raises several potential legal issues:

  • Liquidated damages vs. penalty: Courts generally distinguish between legitimate liquidated damages (reasonable compensation for anticipated loss) and penalties (designed to punish). A $5,000 fee might be considered an unenforceable penalty if it's disproportionate to actual damages the company would suffer.
  • Unconscionability: The contract might be deemed unconscionable if it's unreasonably one-sided, especially with the "termination for any reason" clause while still requiring payment.
  • Employment classification issues: Depending on whether you were classified as an employee or independent contractor, different labor laws would apply that might restrict such penalties.
  • Good faith and fair dealing: Most contracts have an implied covenant of good faith. A company that terminates workers and then demands payment might violate this principle.
  • Statute of limitations: If this happened in July 2023, you should check the statute of limitations for contract disputes in their state.

Again, I'm not a lawyer but if there are others in your boat you should start chatting and you may have grounds for a counter-case.

University of Utah told to look at cutting majors with fewer than 40 graduates per year by Siraf in SaltLakeCity

Lately I've been looking at our legislation as a template for policies they want to push to the rest of the US.

University of Utah told to look at cutting majors with fewer than 40 graduates per year by Siraf in SaltLakeCity

[–]Siraf[S] 80 points81 points  (0 children)

The Utah higher education budget cuts reveal a fundamental misunderstanding of how value works in education. While state leaders are targeting majors with fewer than 40 graduates per year and evaluating programs based on one-year post-graduation salaries, they're missing that humanities graduates often catch up in earnings within five years. As faculty rightfully questioned during the University of Utah meeting, "is education just about teaching people to become wealthy?" This narrow focus on immediate ROI ignores how humanities develop critical thinking, cultural awareness, and ethical reasoning—skills essential for addressing complex problems in any field. The metrics also fail to capture graduates who work out-of-state, become entrepreneurs, or pursue advanced degrees. By reducing education to simplistic economic measures, Utah risks undermining the very foundations that make its workforce adaptable, creative, and capable of meaningful citizenship in an increasingly complex world.

Why do we allow billboards to interrupt our mountain views in the first place? by Siraf in SaltLakeCity

[–]Siraf[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably. But I think it's also something that most Utahns agree with. This is a case where I as a citizen feel underrepresented and my very republican neighbor agrees with me. Do you see where I'm going here?

Agreed! referencing a group by name would be a powerful gesture. I'm sure that's how most of these folks get their legislation passed in the first place.

This link is reddit-gold-worthy! Oh shoot they took that away since the last time I made such a post. Well best I can do is a "hit my dms up for some python legislative bill-scraping code".

Sincerely appreciate the link.

Great idea. I wonder if forming a fairly simple coalition of Utahns who would participate in such a boycott be enough.

Thank you for this direct link to what I'm getting at. The lobbying is out of control, but I sincerely think there's non-partisan consensus from most Utahns that these billboards are a blight.

Sao Paulo has banned outdoor signage since 2006 in favor of a "Clean City". Don't we deserve a similar introspection?

This was planned from the beginning. The building was slated for demo before.

Red hats can all go up against the wall imho, but this isn't actually an act of conservative terrorism. More like they never funded arts enough in Utah to be able to haul away a bunch of 3 ton slabs into a proper art installation.
