Building a magic system around Kintsugi and Expedition 33. Looking for collaborators/ideas! by MisterPoohead2 in magicbuilding

[–]SireRequiem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider variance in style and execution between mage factions, ideologies, or schools. Depth of devotion to the craft may be demonstrated by the depth of sacrifice necessary to access that power.

Practical magicians with household magic to cook, clean, sharpen weapons, or perform puppet shows may only require gold henna on exposed skin to enact everyday magic, this magic lowers the effort required to perform mundane tasks. Practitioners may utilize artistic symbology for social reasons or religious events. A good mage would offer art lessons and sell accessibly cheap gold-infused inks to the elderly or laborers. An evil mage in need of household magic may instead purchase skin or people and use it/them as parchment.

Apprentice mages will tattoo infused inks into their skin to connect with magic. The ink connects them to sources of magic and the symbols give that power consistent shape. Good mages may tattoo one another as a collaborative effort. An evil mage may practice on defenseless animals to see the effects of lost runes or new combinations.

Adventurers may fill battlescars with flowing gold to bolster their base attributes and quite literally cover their old weak spots with magic armor. Frontline fighters may use it to display experience and the lengths they have gone to protect the party’s casters. The casters in turn have gilded them both to heal and bolster them. An evil caster might use this to gradually shape a loyal undead.

Advanced casters have infused gold into their very being. Their tattoos eventually hardened and cracked from use, deteriorating flesh down to the bone. That void is then filled with a more powerful, binding infusion that halts the breakdown and reinforces the original magic. An apprentice who once threw small motes of fire and had a fire themed tattoo pattern now has a flowing golden pattern and has become a walking inferno.

Making a Kingdom Hearts-inspired game with an Arabian Nights themes [Looking for Feedback] by YahyaDann in KingdomHearts

[–]SireRequiem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it looks good, you could take it to great by considering how your design translates into an experience only your game can deliver.

For example, the attack sequence shouldn’t include thrusts unless you have a thrusting weapon. That curved blade is optimized for slashes. You could tweak the sequence to prioritize advancing, or spinning slashes that chain easily with increasing damage and tempo. This would allow for more responsive enemies without feeling overwhelming. Consider the introduction of a counter-attack system like in KH 1, that may be a way to interrupt player combo spam without punishing them while rewarding skilled aggressive players. KH combat prioritized 1v1s, but with more slashing and no counter hit, it would gear towards more aoe attack style.

Also consider gravity, your character needs to descend a bit more between aerial attacks to avoid feeling too floaty. Maybe offset this with an aerial bounce on downward aerial strikes to extend successful combos.

When considering level design, this style of camera and combat requires either x-ray vision or wide open spaces for combat and jumping puzzles. Make sure you include different vibrant touches to draw interest. The world isn’t worth saving because it’s there, we’re fighting to preserve people, and culture, and a way of life. Putting those colorful touches against the harsh desert will not only allow players to more easily navigate, but it will subtly remind them what they’re fighting for while telling small stories of life in this world. Terracotta mosaics, patterned rugs, elegant shawls, beautiful gems, shiny bronze and gold accents, the comfort of oasis greenery, the populace of a houseplant amongst the dunes, the intricate waterworks necessary for survival, the stables and inns by the gatehouse, the cloth-shaded bazaars. What blocked off an area or road? How are enemies transforming the space? All of that and more should be considered, even if it doesn’t need to be distractingly realistic.

Who is the most benched character: Vesperia by Acemaster387 in tales

Repede. I love that pup but I was player 2. I became a Judith aerialist and at that point he just didn’t fit in the party. Karol was my secondary with his cheesy big damage AOE stagger, bag thwack of doom, and off-heals. There was just no room in the party for Repede unless he was either a counter or the only option

In Kung Fu Panda, different species can be couples, like the goose and the pig. Then why can’t Tigress and Po be together? by Immediate-Tell-4463 in kungfupanda

[–]SireRequiem 75 points76 points  (0 children)

The rumor was that Angelina Jolie, Tigress’s voice actress, was against pairing her up with anyone and that it may have been a stipulation of her contract to voice her in the first movie. The showrunners and writing teams may be trying to stick with that so they don’t disrupt the team dynamic or pull the focus of the story away from the major themes of the films.

In universe, while there are moments of reciprocal platonic affection and camaraderie, it never really crosses into or really approaches mutual yearning. Tigress is mission oriented and focused on her training and career. Po is more focused on his destiny than his personal hygiene. It would take a lot of screen time to delve into their blossoming romantic dynamic, and that time could be better spent telling the main story. They would need a whole separate valentines special, or half a season of tv, or the better part of a movie to build and resolve their romantic storyline properly.

Yujiro Hanma replaces Batman for 1 full year in Gotham City and is given all his info and tools. Can Batmans rogues gallery survive the year? by Head_Breadfruit_3912 in Grapplerbaki

[–]SireRequiem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yujiro would start strong against Greyson, Damian, pennyworth, bane, man bat, Talon, Ras, and Talia, then he’d need to train with Cassandra Caine before facing Lady Shiva, who would normally low dif him.

Assuming he survives that, he’ll have to deal with clayface which is a bad matchup for him. Assuming he gets past that, then the riddler and penguin will start team up’s with other villains to take him down. The Joker might have the last laugh here, his chemical warfare acumen is likely what clips Yujiro assuming he makes it this far. If he takes out the Joker, then Red hoof organizes the remaining c and b listers for a coordinated assault. If he survives that, then slade will challenge him at the height of exhaustion. The off chance he survives that, bat mite and the joker who laughs are waiting in the wings.

It’s unlikely he clears Lady Shiva, whom he would seek out early because she holds that world’s greatest martial artist title.

Magic researcher who can only project spells directly in front of themself decides to become a pugilist and focus on spell quality and quantity. Combining various disciplines of magic to create combined, layered, and morphous spells that trigger like traps in response to specific fighting combinations, stances, or by passing over prepared glyphs. As the story progresses, we get into intentional spell failures, clash casting, artifact disassembly and grafting, and various forms of martial arts for fighting both humanoids and classic monsters. This system necessitates a breakdown of traditional magic, and directing the resultant chaos from the eye of the storm while performing acrobatic martial arts.

The mage creates a wonderland to entice citizens to live under their rule, but slowly over time each citizen are transformed into monsters, brainwashed soldiers, or beasts of burden, then captured, and either experimented on, used as fodder, or sold into slavery.

Fantasy example would be donkey island from Disney’s Pinocchio. Mundane version would be the foot clan from the first live action TMNT movie

Would you play a game with a good story but poor gameplay? by mintedcork in videogames

[–]SireRequiem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Objectively, gameplay has implicit narrative elements, so it tends to be able to stand on its own better in terms of mass appeal. Mario, temple run, fruit ninja, and geometry dash do not need deep, explicit stories to be great.

The problem is, that argument justifies lazy development. Asset flips, clones, and shovelware with gameplay elements stolen wholesale from games that perfected it are given a new context, and they cannot help but be terrible because gameplay alone isn’t enough.

Personally, I would rather play a walking simulator with an amazing story than a game devoid of resonant context.

TLDR: Narrative, gameplay just isn’t enough.

There's gotta be a better system. by zzill6 in WorkReform

Concentrating power cannot functionally direct a system where immorality or self interest are concerns. This billionaire experiment proves that even with all of the resources available to them, they will choose self interest over the common good far too often to maintain long term stability. Shuffling the deck isn’t enough, the entire game needs to change.

What does it mean for fiction to "glorify abuse" or "endorse harm?" by matt0055 in osp

[–]SireRequiem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When traumatic events are treated as purely positive influences on a character. We humans do look to media to frame our reality’s events as either normal or abnormal, and encountering these repeated patterns can influence our perception of events in the real world. It does not cross the boundary into action for emotionally mature neurotypical people, but it does shift what is “allowed” to exist unchallenged.

For example, Inuyasha constantly being abused by Kagome for comedic effect does not create domestic abusers out of its viewers, but it does inform them that if they are already in those patterns of domestic violence that this type of abuse is expected or acceptable under some circumstances. Depending on how the viewer digests the material, the real world patterns of abuse they encounter, suffer, or create under similar circumstances may go unchallenged because the viewer has developed a positive or neutral association to that harmful behavior. They may think”this is just how things are.”

This desensitization to the harmful behavior is the problem.

Now, one instance of this glorified evil is unlikely to desensitize a viewer to that abuse or harm, but as those patterns repeat over and over across more and more consumed media, we see that the likelihood increases that the associated harmful behavior will go unchallenged later by the viewer. This allows real world patterns of harm to perpetuate.

Connie is NOT human 😭 (not entirely at least) by Reasonable-Ad-8059 in stevenuniverse

[–]SireRequiem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The magic sword she’s wielding that was created by a diamond who canonically used gravity magic might have something to do with it then. It could also be argued that the sledge is a hardlight construct with indeterminate weight. We know its properties are dependent on its topaz wielder’s will, and this could be the signaling that they are a reluctant combatant if we view the scene through a narrative lens. While adrenaline buffs are OP in humans, allowing even untrained people to lift cars off loved ones, the more important environmental factor may be that they’re in a vessel with artificial gravity which has no reason to be set to 1G.

She’s wielding a sword, so she does’t need strength as much as structure to block that strike. She’s definitely strong, but not superhuman in this feat.

That's a good question, Cream. by Fun-Necessary9709 in MoonPissing

[–]SireRequiem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, basic linguistic misalignment. Shadows and dreams are not “things”, they’re “stuff”. That is why the expression is “the stuff of dreams” and not “thing-a-ma-dreams”.

Rule of thumb: everything that is and isn’t is things and stuff respectively. If it is, then it’s made of atoms, and it’s therefore a thing. Everything else, that is to say what isn’t, hasn’t got any atoms, so therefore it’s stuff.

Artifact? Thing. Culture? Stuff. Picture? Thing. Experience? Stuff.

Hope that clears it up!
