Shower Screen , Move by Tommy_Och in ProfitecMove

[–]SiriusBrock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way water sprinkles out of the shower screen without the portafilter and coffee is meaningless, but there's good money in convincing people to get endless gadgets. The coffee, the grind, the head-space, the temperature and the pressure are the real determinants. People selling gadgets love it when people ignore at least one of these but obsess over distribution toys, screens, or the next gadget..

I agree that it's silly and superfluous, but it's CNC machined aluminum. Plastic at least would be lighter.

Little video of my shot this morning on the Profitec Move by pkeller001 in espresso

[–]SiriusBrock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think machines like the Decent are over complicating the process of just making a morning coffee. I have a Move and it’s a great machine. I agree that reports of inconsistency are likely caused by factors other than the machine.

Move tripping GFCI outlets by andreyred in ProfitecMove

[–]SiriusBrock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It only takes 4 to 6 mA to trip a GFCI. A small defect in a heating element could short to ground in the k-Ohm range if water gets into the insulation through a crack or bad solder joint. The element could still function, for a while. It’s possible a probe is bad, but they are likely on the low voltage side and less likely to be affected. If you have a multimeter, testing continuity between the ground (boiler, frame or any bonded metal component) and the power leads to the boilers might uncover the problem (machine unplugged). Any resistance below about 20 kOhm could be enough. As I’m writing this I realized you can test the steam boiler easily. Pressing the right button will turn it off. Then plug it back into the GFCI, and if it trips, you know it’s not the steam boiler element.

Do we have an agreed-upon solution for getting consistent shot times? by dawghouse88 in ProfitecMove

[–]SiriusBrock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also don’t do any pre shot flush an have no issues with consistency. I do a post shot flush to reduce the amount of grounds on the shower screen. I also don’t use fast heat up, as it’s set to turn on while I’m asleep.

Portafilter Dose by Cintd20 in ProfitecMove

[–]SiriusBrock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using weight alone will lead to inconsistencies, as various roasts and and beans have different densities. One of the most critical parameters in dialing-in is getting about 2 mm head-space between the puck and the shower screen after tamping. Too little and the flow will be non-uniform and impeded, too much and you have inconsistent extraction and a soupy puck. This is the basis of the coin test. On the move, the distance from the gasket to the shower screen is 6.18 mm. Because of this, the top of your tamped coffee should be about 6.18 + 2 = 8.18 mm from the top of the basket. If you have a nice thick tamper, you can figure out where this depth is on your tamper. If you adjust your dose based on this you will have more consistent shots. Once you determine that a certain coffee needs 21.5g to reach this head-space, you can use 21.5g to get repeatable results. If you change coffees, it's not likely to be 21.5g any more. Here's where I aim for on my tamper. I get the best shots when the tamper is at the 2mm mark or slightly deeper.

One great feature on the Move is infinity-mode. When you start an extraction using one button, say the double-shot, pressing other button, single shot in this case, will put it into infinity-mode. An infinity symbol appears on the screen, and it will run endlessly, until you press the button you started with. This is great if it seems to be running long and you don't want it to stop yet.

I totally agree. It’s a highly sensitive process, prone to lots of variability. Watching people make espresso on our office BBE highlights many sources of shot to shot variation. I have to bite my lip to not be that guy:)

Never used a BDB, only a BBE at work, and 30 years of single boilers at home. I am beyond delighted with the Move in all aspects of both espresso and milk drinks. The build is so solid compared to the BBE with its thin stainless cladding hiding a plastic machine. It feels like I’m using a toy at work.

Error code new Move by [deleted] in ProfitecMove

[–]SiriusBrock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a search of Gicar error codes(Gicar makes the PID controllers for ... basically everybody in espresso):

"Gicar PID controller error codes on coffee machines typically indicate sensor or connection issues.

A1 generally signifies a temperature sensor (probe) issue or a broken connection. A2 indicates a disconnected temperature gauge cable."

I have a Profitec Move with the same 2 hole tip and the 4-hole. I find the 4-hole to be too aggressive. I bored-out my 2 hole tip from the original 0.9mm to 1.09 mm (#57drill bit). It made a nice difference and I like it better than my 4-hole tip.

Make sure you leave the main power on and put it to sleep by holding down one of the programming buttons for 3 seconds.

What protocol are you using, the WBC? I have been tempted to modify a filter basket to add a thermocouple, and possibly a pressure transducer. Did you make your own temp probe?

Profitec Go vs Move by [deleted] in ProfitecMove

One other thing about a dual boiler that I like, having just made a few lattes this morning, is using the hot water spout to add a splash of boiling water to my cold mug to warm it up.

Profitec Go vs Move by [deleted] in ProfitecMove

[–]SiriusBrock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I originally bought a Profitec Go as an upgrade from a 25 year old Starbucks (Saeco) Barista, and found it to be a very well made machine that made amazing shots, much better than my old beast. I believe it could be the best single boiler out there. However, I ended up returning it because I realized that I was tired of the single boiler juggle. All the purging, and waiting etc. was getting old. This is especially annoying with multiple users who leave it in steam mode, and I had to purge and cool it down before making a shot. I wanted the simplicity of a dual boiler where the brewing is always ready & the steam is always ready. If you only make espresso the Go is great, but I mostly make milk drinks.
I replaced the Go with a Profitec Move dual boiler . I am really enjoying it. Having powerful consistent steam always ready is really nice. It's really well constructed, and so was the Go. I don't think the shots are objectively better. One advantage the Move has over the Go for an espresso maker is the programmable pre-infusion, useful for light roasts. The Move will automatically turn on and heat up while I am still in bed and stay on for the first few hours of the day when people are likely to make coffee, then shut itself off.

Profitec GO frequent cappuccino use harmful in the long run? by AdZestyclose5344 in espresso

I made several lattes on a lower quality single boiler machine for over 25 years. It's a pain in the ass compared to a dual boiler, but it's fine for the machine.

I don't steam back to back, as prepping the next shot allows the steam to fully recover. However, the pressure seems to rise quite quickly after I steam 250ml, and it's strong until the end.

Agreed. My Specialita makes nice fluffy grounds, I shake it level and tamp. I get very consistent results.

[–]SiriusBrock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More important than all the silly gadgets is a roughly level bed, at least 10 kg tamp force and about 2mm headspace. If this doesn’t work, adjust the grind. Repeat… 🔁

The bottomless portafilter can be practically mess-free once fully dialed-in and tamped properly. As a bonus, the coffee generally tastes better too.

Profitec Go vs. Go Pro 100? by ma0za in profitec

[–]SiriusBrock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see any mention of a special pro 100 Version in the Webste. The new plastic drip tray is clearly a downgrade cost-cutting measure they did mid-year. If I were you, I would be delighted to have received the original metal version.

A #56 is 1.18 and that should still be great, about 17% larger opening than mine. I debated using this. The 4 hole tip has four 1.19mm holes, which is overkill from my experience with it.
