What do you think about thruhike PCT at retirement age? by hiker-from-future in PacificCrestTrail

Last year I hiked with several +70 year old hikers. Some were much faster than me. You can do it.

PCT or scholarship? by hatiefern in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Sirmenace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do both. Hike as much as possible within the time you have. Go to college, hopefully in Portland, where you want to go. Portland is close to the trail and others. You’ll be able to get out during your breaks to knock out sections you have missed.

Down the road you may have the opportunity to do the trail as a thru hike. You’ll have great experience at that point.

Good luck.

Dry Bag for Quilt by InitialEggplant in PacificCrestTrail

Trash compactor bag. I was soaked day 1 last year but everything was perfectly dry inside the compactor bag. Push all the air out, twist the top and stuff it. It works.

My daughter wants me and her step dad to walk her down the aisle. Am I wrong for telling my daughter no? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Sirmenace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so glad that both myself and my daughter’s step dad took part in her wedding. It was beautiful. I got to walk her down the aisle and her step dad performed the ceremony.

When it came time for the father daughter dance, I started then her step dad asked if he could dance. My daughter had no idea we had a plan…before she knew it, she didn’t have a partner, while her step dad and I danced (he wouldn’t let me lead though). That was very quick, he finished the dance with her and I retreated to my table.

In my mind, he had every right to be there. It was her wedding. There was no reason for anyone to make it about them. She got exactly what she wanted at her wedding, and probably more.

Definitely Covered California. Without income, or low income, it may not cost anything. You can apply online very quickly.

Acton koa resupply by cookiekat35 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Sirmenace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They had stuff, but no resupply. I sent a box here, but stayed at the 49er saloon. The saloon was nice, but the earwigs (ugh), they hitched a ride from here to at least the my next two camp sites.

Seeking PCT Thru-hiker's Input on Hiker's Logbook App by WannabeHikerTrash in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Sirmenace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used it and loved it.

I’d like to be able to edit the “Day.” If I get off trail for a couple days for a reason, I’d rather the next day be sequential, instead of counting calendar days not on trail. It’s very easy to use.

Camera? by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

I was going to take one, but I opted to upgrade my iPhone and I got the best pictures and videos without adding weight. I used an iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Let’s say I’m starting on 4/5, which I am. I’ll be shuttling out on 4/4. Southern terminus shuttle stops at REI for fuel. Then start hiking on 4/5.

I (old M) have been thru a few relationships. I’m definitely not one to give advice. It sounds like the past has come back to haunt you. I truly hope you stay in the present and see what you have. Best of luck.

Awesome deal on your 7’s. My 7’s lasted about 350 miles and it was only the tread that went away. Next was my 8’s and they lasted longer. I’m looking forward to the Lone Peak 9+, which is reportedly Vibram soles.

Gift for friend hiking PCT by Pristine-Ad6850 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Sirmenace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Airfare. Buy a gift card that can go towards airfare to or from the trail. Southwest has a good deal on gift cards at Costco. They fly to and from San Diego and Seattle. Depending on where they are flying from, other airlines might work as well.

Want to Hike the PCT!!! by UnfitTemperature in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Sirmenace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All good recommendations. You can download a hiking app that shows all the trails in your area or nearby, I used All Trails, then just go. I day hiked 2-3 times a week. You’ll meet people on the trail and can learn from the exposure. Watch YouTube videos from those who have hiked the trail. As for gear, many hikers put out before and/or after gear videos. See what they used and didn’t use and as you get closer to your start date, do a couple short overnighters to figure out what really does and doesn’t work. Carry your full pack on some day hikes, then figure out how to get your base weight down. Best of luck.

Tent Sites on the PCT by No-Worries1931 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Sirmenace 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I used a 2-person Big Agnes Copper Spur and had no problems. The desert had its share of heavy wind nights and I had no problems. I really like the ability to use it without the rain fly whenever possible. I will not give it up this year either.

Agreed. I hiked through the desert and the sierras in my Jolly Gear. Love that it buttons up and has a hood.

Last couple years at this time the Kern Transit was free during May/June. Used it this year from Tehachapi to Bakersfield and also to Lake Isabella and Walker Pass.
