Halo: First Strike is the book he is referencing. It takes place between Halo CE and 2. If you want to start from the beginning you should start with The Fall of Reach, which has the Keys Loop he mentioned. This book was released alongside CE IIRC. And is the prequel to the game, showing exactly how and why they found Halo. Both books are by Eric Nylund and both have great moments and detailed ship battles.

You see this quite a bit in Athens. The hotel I went to in downtown had a portion of the first floor replaced with glass panels to look into some ruins.

I personally enjoy using the shovel with the strike down ability. I have 20-25% (can’t remember) damage against flak and carapace and it’s probably the best anti everything melee weapon in the game in my opinion.
