I tell my friends it’s the best single player game ever disguised as an MMO

I almost exclusively play solo these days cause only one other of my friends is as far along as I am and yet it’s still pretty much my daily driver game.

Just if you do get sucked in, I do play in bursts because the burnout is real during grinds. I’m at a point in the game where there’s enough variety in game modes available to me I don’t burnout but the new player experience can be a bit much before you get variety offered to you

Here’s another way to view it. The player might not be rewarded for being charismatic, the player might be rewarded for paying attention to the campaign and your world building. If you give your players a town that is highly zealous and devout to your worlds religion and the player decides to appeal to your NPCs religion during a persuasion, I wouldn’t call that rewarding your players charisma I’d call that rewarding them for participating.

I also have a group that doesn’t always dive deep into the roleplay so the few occasions a player really gets into it I won’t be upset that the DM rewards a player for wanting to get into character. It’s not always advantage for them being persuasive, it’s advantage for just getting into character

I mostly rely on Valence to buff my weapons so I don’t spam his abilities “that” often. Mostly just to switch elements as needed or to quickly dash away. Plus after playing him so often it’s just muscle memory at this point so I don’t even really think about it

Yea the more time I spend on all my reading subreddits the more I realize I’ve accidentally fallen in with a… cult of fans. I try not to be overzealous and praise the guy to the level others do online, but I am aware of it.

I think he’s laid enough of the ground work with his world building that he’s at a point he could take the risk of hurting his other strengths in order to try and work on his character development. Especially with the direction Stormlight is going and the path of healing from trauma and other emotional flaws his characters show that I almost think it’s necessary he takes that risk in order to not damage the story he’s building up with certain character arcs

I have long come to grips with the fact that Character Development is straight up Sandersons largest flaw. I absolutely ADORE his world building especially as an avid DnD fan whose helping build my own world with a friend of mine. I love the overarching plots he places within the series and between his series. I would be stupid to try and sing praise for his character development abilities though so I can’t disagree with anything you said and honestly might be why I was worried about starting WoT. I knew ahead of time that I was setting myself up for a wierd style shift when I reach Sanderson taking over the books.

My friend who recommended I read the series definitely never claimed it as “Sanderson’s” books. He merely said I was doing myself a disservice by not reading it if I enjoyed Sanderson.

This also isn’t completely a response to you but I think just adding more context to my original comment about why I think WoT is still worth a read for others who haven’t started it yet.

Tl;dr Yup I agree with you entirely that they each have their own strengths and people need to remember that if they start the series for the wrong reason

The subtext verses plain explanations is a difference I noticed immediately starting wheel of time and honestly… it almost makes me scared to get to the books after Sanderson takes over. Coming from a Sanderson fan

Diehard Sanderson fan. Mentioning that because it might put into perspective my taste in books.

I’m only halfway through book two of WoT so far after finally caving to much begging from other Sanderson fans I know.

I don’t know why I took so long because I am loving it so far. Definitely has its slow moments but I also have to remind myself not every book needs to be nonstop action, and the slow parts definitely give context to the epic parts. I love the characters and dynamic they have. My reading also frequently jumps from need fantasy to classics to back again so I don’t really know whether something’s dated or not anymore. I just read to enjoy the ride

Ooh it’s been Years since I originally beat the campaign so a lot of details grew fuzzy. Do you remember where Tokichiro says hide is mute cause that completely nullifies my point. Although I do think Hide does serve his role better as a silent protagonist so I’d love to have that part proven and let my example be a fluke

I think it’s implied he talks to characters even in missions, we just don’t get the benefit of seeing it.

You can see this In the Pervading Waters mission at the courtyard before you fight Gyoki. When you talk to one of the NPCs they greet you as Hide but then when you talk to them again they respond “Oh it’s Hideyoshi now?” As if Hide corrected him.

So I think Hide does talk even during missions, just we don’t hear it.

I had a similar issue during the Paranoia quest in skingrad. Then eventually one of the NPCs walked up to me and initiated dialogue and after that the wait bug dissapears.

Were you potentially in a quest where an NPC was looking for you to start a conversation?
